recipe on the blog! green banana ginger avocado smoothie www.theukmama.com/2013/09/food-on-friday-breakfast-and-a-...
Sebastien's Soma Smoothie. The bike is for riding in Paris, but this picture was shot in Cornwall, UK in August.
No precise measurements - I just tossed in:
- limeaid
- non-fat vanilla yogurt
- two spoonfuls of full-fat strawberry yogurt (what was left and that had to get eaten)
- half of an avocado
- frozen blueberries
- frozen strawberries
- 2 small squeezes of honey
The avocado tones down the tartness of the fruit and adds a lovely velvety texture, but is otherwise not distinguishable.
We tend to think of smoothies as cold and dessert'ish. Many years ago I was inspired by the promotion for a blender with stainless steel container that offered Meals in a Drink using the option of hot water/broth as the liquid whirring in vegetables and a slice of whole wheat bread; for me this has evolved into a 'warm' smoothie. The variations of a healthy, satisfying 'meal in a drink' are endless; here is one sample. In a glass or plastic blender container - milk, canned pineapple with some of the juice, scoop of raw oatmeal, scoop of raisins, handful of cole slaw, 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup of frozen mixed vegetables (carrots/cauliflower/broccoli). I use the frozen fruit and veggies because this is convenient and ages ago I began to feel that fresh/flash frozen fruit and veggies would have good nutrition, a fact that is now supported in recent studies and books (The End of Illness, for one). I have used them in their frozen state in the smoothie and this results in a slurpie, more or less, and is refreshing. I also discovered that cold foods can cause digestive upsets - so- began to experiment with running hot water over the frozen blueberries and veggies before adding to the smoothie - which resulted in the 'warm' aspect. You can also vary the density of the smoothie depending on how much you blend it from chop to liquefy and use a spoon, sipping, or a straw - which tends to change the eating experience. It's worthwhile to 'play' with food!

I thought this was a fun whacky combination, but actually seeing some heathy veg combinations people make smoothies out of... this is pretty tame
Take 6 kiwi fruit and 2 bananas, place in blender with some fruit juice (apple and mango?) and whizz. Bingo - 2 servings of smoothie. Dead easy!
We're on a green smoothie kick, thanks to friends Alison (of FlyAweigh) and Ronnie.
Four days down and wondering why we didn't do this before...
Smoothieboard print on left. Marlin/Ramps on right.
Ignoring the temperature issues on the smoothie print it has less faceting. The vertical lines that are clearly visible in the Marlin/Ramps print are not visible in the smoothie print.

Smoothies made their debut into contemporary society sometime around the late 1960’s
when they were sold by ice cream vendors and introduced in health food stores. These were mostly made from fruit, ice, and fruit juice. Later, in the 1970’s, milk and ice cream were added and now, the list of smoothie ingredients is endless.
Dessert smoothies have become a light and easy way to top off a meal. They can feature things like creamy whipped topping, tasty bits of chocolate, toffee or fresh ripe fruit. So, here’s a few recipe suggestions to keep you blending all summer long.

my daughter is a fan of smoothies, she's also a fan of pressing the buttons on the blender so this is a fun kitchen activity for her.
on this occasion we put some peach yoghurt, one banana broken up, orange juice and some frozen raspberries all together and blended until smooth.

This is summer time and we are ready for all fresh fruits. We are celebrating the season’s fresh fruits by offering a Pink Smoothie With Watermelon, Strawberries and Cherries recipe. Red fruits are especially high in antioxidants, which soak up damaging free radicals and help prevent heart disease.
