99 Cent Store was Miller's Outpost.

David Quotes

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anchor Blue Inc. (formerly Miller's Outpost) was a Corona, California-based clothing retailer which had over 100 stores in the western United States. It generally sold its own Anchor Blue brand name of youth-oriented denim, graphic T-shirts and casual clothing.[1] Sometimes the company was referred to as the Anchor Blue Inc., but their retail clothing chain of stores was labeled as Anchor Blue.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early History

The origins of Anchor Blue Clothing Company date to 1948 when brothers Dave and Lou Miller founded Miller's Surplus store (originally Ontario War Surplus). The Ontario, California-based surplus store sold both military surplus and clothing during its early days. The shop gained popularity among local youth as being one of the few places in the area that sold Levi's jeans. The Miller brothers decided to pursue separate ventures and as a result the business folded in the early 1970s.

Dave Miller founded his own clothing retail store named Miller's Outpost in 1972. The business debuted in Ontario and Pomona specializing in clothing catered to young adults. Soon thereafter the business took off, spawning 100 stores in the region by the turn of the decade. Miller sold his company shortly after reaching the centennial milestone to Amcena Corporation. The new owner continued the store's growth trend, expanding to over 300 storefronts across California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and other states by the end of the 1980s.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later years

In the late '90s, the company changed its name to Anchor Blue because they had marketed, distributed, and sold their own line of jeans (for both men and women) and other clothing and accessories in their stores but wanted the chain's name to reflect their own name brand. Up until that time, Miller's Outpost (and subsequently Anchor Blue Clothing Company) were also selling brand names from some of their competitors in the apparel industry. Levi's, Menace, Mecca, and other name brands were also sold but later dropped when Anchor Blue decided to exclusively sell its own Anchor Blue fashion line. During the years that it was known as Miller's Outpost, the retail chain marketed and sold their own urbanwear line, Steel Wing, and their own activewear line. Those two lines have been discontinued.

Most of the Anchor Blue stores were located in enclosed shopping centers.

The company was owned by an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, a Florida-based investment firm.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bankruptcy

Anchor Blue went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2009. During this process they closed over 50 stores, including all their stores in Florida and Georgia. They also sold their sister brand, Levi/Dockers Outlet by Most to Levi's Inc. In August 2010, the company opened its online site for customers to make purchases, after a more than 3-year delay due to poor sales performance.

As of January 5, 2011, Anchor Blue ceased corporate operations.

Since then, Anchor Blue have advertised their "Going Out of Business" sales. They've tried to sell their products, including store fixtures with discounts up to 70%. On February 17, 2011, Anchor Blue officially closed all stores due to economic struggles.

Photos taken on 02/28/2009 of a shopping center located in Montebello, off Wilcox, along the 60 Pomona Freeway.

What makes this center unusual is that from 1999 until 2007, Albetsons operated two stores across the street from one another. On one side was an Albertsons (former Lucky) Supermarket and on the other side was a Max Foods (warehouse type supermarket).

For this shopping center, the Max Foods has an interesting history. Originally a former Zodys Department Store, which closed in the 1980s. Albertsons took over site and the building was subdivided into several stores including a Supermarket. (note, an Albertson Supermarket was originally was located next to this store currently an Office Depot, however when Albertsons took over the site they changed the type of supermarket to a warehouse type market. Albertsons named this new concept store Grocery Warehouse, then change its name to to Max Foods. Immediately after Max Foods closed, Albertsons totally renovated the inside of the old warehouse type supermarket into a traditional Albertsons Supermarket. When the new Albertsons Supermarket opened, it replaced an older Albertsons, a former Lucky Supermarket, which is now a Smart and Final.

To the left of Albertsons is a 99 Cents Only Store and a Circuit City Electronics Store, which made up part of the old Zodys Departtment Store building which was subdivided. To the right of Zodys was Albertsons, which is now Office Depot. Further right is CVS Pharmacy, which was a former Sav-on Drug Store. Montebello, California

Former PayLess Super Drug Store at 1730 and 1734 Arden Way in Arden-Arcade.This 1970-era(give or take a year or two)unit continued to have pre-1990 PayLess interior even during its first few years as a Rite Aid(it even had 1970-ish signage in the pharmacy),and its facade resembled that of still intact PSD legacy units in Cupertino and San Mateo(both also still operated by Rite Aid)and had hexagonal PayLess-logo signs on the facade and in the parking lot. That all changed by 2004 when Rite Aid downsized and altered this unit beyond recognition from the inside out:the pharmacy was relocated to what is now the left-rear corner of the current store,a third of the former sales floor(including the original location of the pharmacy)was carved out into its own space that was subleased to Smart and Final, the remainder of what is now the current Rite Aid(still rather larged sized and using all of the remaining floor space)was remodeled into the early-2000's(pre-Customer World)interior package while keeping the original aisle layout, the photo counter was relocated near the current entrance(near the original and current garden center compounds),and the third-party watch repair business moved out.I've been in this store both before(early 2002)and after(at least a dozen times in the past few years)the major remodel, and can say that the high gabled airy ceiling is surprisingly intact.BTW the 1734 Watt Avenue addressed currently used by Smart and Final previously belonged to the PayLess Drug regional office that was recycled by both Thrifty PayLess and Rite Aid (overseeing stores in the Sacramento Valley)before it was relocated next to the Gold River store before this locations big remodel...

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life." Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products. Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled.

With the passage of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 , certain portions of the electronic waste stream are defined and the systems to recover and recycle them will be administratively regulated beyond the universal waste rules that apply to material handling. Please review CalRecycle's efforts to implement the Act for more information.

Appliances Disposal

All appliances or “white goods” (clothes washers/dryers, refrigerators, ovens, water heaters, air conditioners, etc) become valuable sources of scrap metal when they are no longer wanted. However, some components in appliances contain hazardous materials that can damage human health and the environment if they are not removed and properly managed. Hazardous components may include: encapsulated polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); Freon, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) and other refrigerants; mercury in switches and temperature control devices; Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in metal-encased capacitors; used oil from compressors and transmissions; and any other material that is a regulated hazardous waste. Please dispose of these items properly.

This Kragen closed a few months back and is currently for lease. Back in the 90s this used to be a Bike Store and a Swensen's Ice Cream. I faintly remember the Swensen's, but remember its location, the bike store, we bought many a bikes there and helmets (we used to live like 2 minutes from this store)

I also miss Swensons, they made good ice cream and it was a nice ice cream parlor, too bad they are all gone now.

Updated Photos of former Zodys Department Store, subdivided into several stores including this Supermarket. Albertson originally was located next to this store, and relocated to this building, renaming the store Grocery Warehouse, then Max Foods. Updated parking lot sign that has changed from Max Foods to Albertsons.
