Photos taken on June 7, 2008. Site of former Adhor Farms Dairy that was converted into a combination Shopping Center and Mall in the late 1960s, early 1970s. The complex is located on La Cienega, a couple of miles to the north of the 10 Freeway and it is retail buildings surrounding a giant open parking lot with another giant covered parking lot behind the old Montgomery Wards Department Store. On the left side was Thrifty Drug Store (converted to Rite Aid and in the last year taken over by Longs Drugs), unknown stores (one being Wherehouse Music), Fazios Supermarket (closed and converted into Builders Emporium Hardware Store, then chain closed and taken over by Circuit City Electronics Store), Woolworths (chain closed and taken over by Family Paredes (chain own by National Stores). To the right of the stores is a two story mall. It was very small, always empty of customers and stores!. Connected to the mall, on the right was a Montgomery Wards Department Store. In the last few years of Wards existence, Wards subdivided their store handing over a portion to Toys R Us. When Wards closed, prior to the chain's demise, the former Wards sat vacant for a few years, then the Wards portion of the original Wards Department Store was subdivided with Staples Office Supply (moved from across the street) and LA Fitness Gym. The Toys R Us has remained and is now going through a renovation. The mall has gone through a series of changes and tenants. Smart and Final Grocery Warehouse finally moved in several years ago, taking over the entire first floor of the mall. Bringing a grocery retailer back into the complex since Fazios left many years ago.

Next to Toys R Us is the former Wards Auto Center, which was converted to shops. Finally, there is an office building on one corner of the lot.

Across the street was a former Hughes Family Market, which was originally a Daylight Market. When Hughes left, it became a Daylight Market again, until it closed and sat vacant for many years.

The Shopping Center was known as Wards Plaza and is now known as La Cienega Plaza. It continues to be modified with buildings added. In recent years McDonalds, Coffee Bean, and El Pollo Loco have been added.

Former Zodys Department Store that closed in 1980's and subdivided. This site was taken over by Albertsons and operated under the name of Grocery Warehouse and later Max Foods. Albertsons had originally operated a store in this same shopping center until it moved next door into the Zodys building. The former Albertsons is now a Office Depot. In 1999, Albertsons took over Lucky Supermarkets, which had a store across the street. The Lucky became an Albertsons and operated until November 21,2007. These photos were taken on November 14,2007 at around 6 am, about two hours prior to the grand opening of the new store. One of xx photos of this center.

Fazio's Supermarket located at 1839 La Cienga Blvd. in La Cienga,CA. There was also a Thrifty Drug Store, Woolworth Variety Store, and Montgomery Ward in the shopping center. The Fazio's Supermarket was originally an A&P followed by Shopping Bag before Fazio's. By the late 1980s the building was significantally remodeled for Circuit City which operated in the building until the demise of the company in 2009.

The Thrifty Drug Store became Longs in 1998 and in 2009 was rebranded as a CVS. The Montgomery Ward has been sub-divided between a fitness center, ToysRus, and a community college. The Woolworth building is now occupied by a Smart and Final.

Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California 90034

Living in Culver City near several movie studios I often come across interesting cars like this Lotus Elise S I saw when I went grocery shopping.

About a year ago I saw another Lotus Elise on a nighttime walk.

I am very happy that Fromex in Marina del Rey, my favorite local lab, just got a Noritsu scanner so they can now process and and do high resolution scans of all of my C-41 and black and white medium format work.

Photos taken on 02/28/2009 of a shopping center located in Montebello, off Wilcox, along the 60 Pomona Freeway.

What makes this center unusual is that from 1999 until 2007, Albetsons operated two stores across the street from one another. On one side was an Albertsons (former Lucky) Supermarket and on the other side was a Max Foods (warehouse type supermarket).

For this shopping center, the Max Foods has an interesting history. Originally a former Zodys Department Store, which closed in the 1980s. Albertsons took over site and the building was subdivided into several stores including a Supermarket. (note, an Albertson Supermarket was originally was located next to this store currently an Office Depot, however when Albertsons took over the site they changed the type of supermarket to a warehouse type market. Albertsons named this new concept store Grocery Warehouse, then change its name to to Max Foods. Immediately after Max Foods closed, Albertsons totally renovated the inside of the old warehouse type supermarket into a traditional Albertsons Supermarket. When the new Albertsons Supermarket opened, it replaced an older Albertsons, a former Lucky Supermarket, which is now a Smart and Final.

To the left of Albertsons is a 99 Cents Only Store and a Circuit City Electronics Store, which made up part of the old Zodys Departtment Store building which was subdivided. To the right of Zodys was Albertsons, which is now Office Depot. Further right is CVS Pharmacy, which was a former Sav-on Drug Store. Montebello, California

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life." Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products. Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled.

With the passage of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 , certain portions of the electronic waste stream are defined and the systems to recover and recycle them will be administratively regulated beyond the universal waste rules that apply to material handling.

Photo taken of former JONS Marketplace Supermarket, that replaced another market (name unknown). After JONS closed the store after many years of operation, it was gutted and replaced by Smart and Final Grocery Warehouse. It was repainted grey on the outside. Smart and Final operated the store from around 2004 until early this year, when it closed. It currently houses a Goodwill Thrift Store. Smart and Final kept the original Art Deco outside of the store. Located at 1500 W. 6th Street in Los Angeles California. Across the street is a K.F.C. Restaurant.

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their “useful life.” Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products.

Please review CalRecycle’s efforts to implement the Act for more information.

David Quotes

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anchor Blue Inc. (formerly Miller's Outpost) was a Corona, California-based clothing retailer which had over 100 stores in the western United States. It generally sold its own Anchor Blue brand name of youth-oriented denim, graphic T-shirts and casual clothing.[1] Sometimes the company was referred to as the Anchor Blue Inc., but their retail clothing chain of stores was labeled as Anchor Blue.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early History

The origins of Anchor Blue Clothing Company date to 1948 when brothers Dave and Lou Miller founded Miller's Surplus store (originally Ontario War Surplus). The Ontario, California-based surplus store sold both military surplus and clothing during its early days. The shop gained popularity among local youth as being one of the few places in the area that sold Levi's jeans. The Miller brothers decided to pursue separate ventures and as a result the business folded in the early 1970s.

Dave Miller founded his own clothing retail store named Miller's Outpost in 1972. The business debuted in Ontario and Pomona specializing in clothing catered to young adults. Soon thereafter the business took off, spawning 100 stores in the region by the turn of the decade. Miller sold his company shortly after reaching the centennial milestone to Amcena Corporation. The new owner continued the store's growth trend, expanding to over 300 storefronts across California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and other states by the end of the 1980s.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later years

In the late '90s, the company changed its name to Anchor Blue because they had marketed, distributed, and sold their own line of jeans (for both men and women) and other clothing and accessories in their stores but wanted the chain's name to reflect their own name brand. Up until that time, Miller's Outpost (and subsequently Anchor Blue Clothing Company) were also selling brand names from some of their competitors in the apparel industry. Levi's, Menace, Mecca, and other name brands were also sold but later dropped when Anchor Blue decided to exclusively sell its own Anchor Blue fashion line. During the years that it was known as Miller's Outpost, the retail chain marketed and sold their own urbanwear line, Steel Wing, and their own activewear line. Those two lines have been discontinued.

Most of the Anchor Blue stores were located in enclosed shopping centers.

The company was owned by an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners, a Florida-based investment firm.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bankruptcy

Anchor Blue went through Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2009. During this process they closed over 50 stores, including all their stores in Florida and Georgia. They also sold their sister brand, Levi/Dockers Outlet by Most to Levi's Inc. In August 2010, the company opened its online site for customers to make purchases, after a more than 3-year delay due to poor sales performance.

As of January 5, 2011, Anchor Blue ceased corporate operations.

Since then, Anchor Blue have advertised their "Going Out of Business" sales. They've tried to sell their products, including store fixtures with discounts up to 70%. On February 17, 2011, Anchor Blue officially closed all stores due to economic struggles.
