After slogging up Pinnacle spur from Arete Forks Hut, we were looking forward to some easy travel along the Tararua Tops.

Just finished slogging thru the snow outside - now I'm all cozy back indoors.
This coffeepot makes the best coffee ever - although there are those that argue it's due to the lake water.
I found these hips on a climbing roe that I hadn't't cut off after flowering. Next year I am (perhaps) going to leave these to all mature.

An oak tree at West Virginia’s Hawks Nest overlook frames the gorge of the New River as CSX merchandise train H750 slogs eastward on a humid August afternoon. The single AC-traction locomotive on the headend is assisted by a second unit in the middle of the train. Together, they’re making maybe fifteen miles per hour on their twisting, upstream run on Main Track Two—part of this train’s daily trek from Russell, Kentucky, to Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Just ahead, Track One diverges to cross the river on a pair of Parker through trusses. Eight miles beyond, Track Two crosses the river on a single Parker truss to rejoin Track One at Sewell. Before this train finishes passing through the scene, a westward empty hopper train will ease across the bridge—a flurry of activity for a line that currently sees about a dozen trains a day.
For all the beauty it offers, Hawks Nest has a tragic history. The location takes its name from osprey that used to nest in the cliffs here. Blasting during railroad construction from 1869 to 1873 disturbed the birds and they never returned, although you can still see vultures catching thermals at eye level. Most of the New’s flow exits the gorge via a tunnel next to the dam at lower right, which runs three miles under Gauley Mountain to provide hydroelectric power for a metals plant at Alloy. Constructed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the tunnel runs through nearly pure deposits of silica. Project managers demanded grueling hours and provided almost no safety equipment, and hundreds of the workers who dug the tunnel later died from silicosis.
Hawks Nest is a touchstone for me. As a frequent stop on family outings during my childhood, it is the place where the notion of the railroad in the landscape first enthralled me. In my early days as a photographer I visited frequently, making a few memorable images and more than a few memories. One of my favorite visits was a summer morning in 2007 with my grandfather, when there were no trains to disturb our conversation. As I learned more of the history of Hawks Nest, it has become a place to try to reconcile conflicting feelings over technology and its price. Even as life has taken me far from Hawks Nest, it remains a powerful memory, a thought that never fails to elicit strong emotions.
This visit was a bonus, a detour and a brief stop on the way to meet part of my wife’s family, and my first time here in more than a decade. We stayed for less than half an hour, and you could easily wait hours here without seeing any trains. Somehow we saw two. (Although it's hard for me to think of an eastward merchandise train as anything other than Q302...) Even in the high backlight of a summer afternoon, all of the magic was still there. For me, I suspect it always will be.

Nearing Stormy Loops slogging up the bank from Margam Moors is 60091 with a loaded steel trip to Llanwern. The train conveys covered wagons to the front and open coil carriers to the rear. This working is good for producing a class 60 on a Sunday as there is no Murco traffic, within the hour 60100 had also passed here with a steel train to Dee Marsh.

66741 'Swanage Railway' slogs up the incline at Belstead, Ipswich on the 7th July 2023. The GBRf hauled intermodal service snakes south along the Great Eastern Main Line as part of 4M02's path from Felixstowe North terminal to Hams Hall. This location, which can be accessed via the footpath running through the field and across the GEML, offers plenty of shots in the early evening. Getting the image balanced took a bit of tinkering, with lots of lines on offer from the tyre tracks, telegraph poles and overhead wires. (Photo taken with pole)
A contrast to Glorious Devon!
By February 2005 steam was fast on the way out on the Ji-Tong line in China. On my penultimate day on the Jing Peng pass I tried the Tunnel Four departure shot for the first and only time. It was a hard climb up the snow covered cliff face and it all seemed in vain as the steam created a shadow over the locos. At the last moment it cleared and the hard working QJs could be seen in all their glory.
Hard to believe even this late on I only had the company of a single Dutchman on the hillside...but wherever you go to photograph steam you will find a Dutchman!
Haz deporte, contamos contigo!!!! este era un slogan televisivo de hace muchos años para fomentar el deporte entre la población española. (Para entendernos más o menos de la época de Cúentame, jejejeje)
A wonderful sight - after a few hours of slog I finally get a glimpse of my destination - still a fair way to go! A nice little 6-bunk hut in the middle of nowhere... I went in from No.1 Line Track of which only the first 2 kms are maintained by DOC and shown on maps. The rest of the track I think is the remnants of an old forestry track and although the first part was relatively easy to follow being marked by pink ribbons, the second half is quite over-grown in places with no markings and I found it to be very difficult to follow and quite a hard slog; but from the point where I took this photo the track got a bit easier...
In driving rain and almost total darkness a Jubilee slogs up the last few yards to the summit of the Long Drag at Ais Gill on the Settle and Carlisle line. The sight and sound will live with me for a very long time, this was steam at its most awesome, a wild night in a wild and lonely place
60063 slogs up Pilning Bank at walking pace with 6A11 08.51 Margam to Theale loaded Murco tanks running several hours late. This train normally departs from Robeston at 22.46 and arrives at Theale 06.15 the following morning. Note the Margam black sheep sticker above the footstep on the front of the loco. Tuesday 28th August 2012.
After slogging up a hill in near darkness only to find sunrise was a bit nothingy I waited on the hilltop and eventually the sun cleared the far hill. In time it lit the mist golden, casting long shadows across the meadow.

Slogging our guts out on the last stretch of the climb up Ben Lawers, the sun burst through the clouds lighting up the hills below us.
Standing up there and watching those mountains is absolutely breathtaking. The freezing wind, the tiredness, and the aching muscles all leave you momentarily as you embrace the idyllic sight.

After slogging up the really steep bit in a deluge the rain continued as we reached the first top on the northern end of the ridge, but as we turned south for the main summit the clouds started to break up and tease us with glimpses of the views we could have seen on a good day.

Contrary to the title, it's blistering here in Provo, South Dakota, and the train isn't too far from its destination, either.

Slogging up Battlefield Bank with 2200 tonne of fine aggregate stone is Freightliner class 66615 with the now late running Morton on Lugg to Crewe Basford Hall. On arrival at Crewe the train will be rostered to work the train onto Washford Heath
70802 and an unidentified classmate, slog up Hatton Bank, working the Hinksey Sidings - Bescot Up Engineers Sidings, with a Kirow Crane, in tow.
Standing on Hatton station, north bound trains can be heard for maybe one or two minutes, especially in this evening's damp air, before reaching you, and it was obvious with it's whining AC traction motors that a class 70 was on its way; the crane was just a bonus.

During my monthly 'troll' slogging through mp for the best freebies I came across asteria creations, I was surprised that I'd not heard of them... Decided they looked worth a visit in sl. I arrived, I joined the group (pleasantly surprised that joining is FREE) as felt my jaw drop when I saw the group gifts.
I really appreciate designers who do not simply 'retire' items, who choose instead to share them with their customers, and that is what I see here. This picture only represents one quarter of what was on offer. And yes, some items are old, but wow, this would be an amazing collection for someone new to SL, and existing members hoping to pad out their inventory with FREEEBIIEESS. Wandering throughout the main store now.... I suspect I will hand over my cash asap. Freakin AWESOME!

Stanier Black5 No.5428 slogs round the curve at Beckhole on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Back in the 1960s I cleaned this engine and learned how to fire a steam engine, on her footplate, when I was an engine cleaner at 55C. No reproduction or use without prior consent
SR Schools Class 926 Repton gets stuck in as it makes its way up the fierce gradient from Grosmont to Goathland, with the 6 coach 1430 departure from the former. The sound was tremendous. Seen near Beck Hole.
So after a long slog, we finally get to the end of my massive March session, aside from the handful of 'Underwear Sunday' photos left.
This was an awkward set to do as it turned out someone was coming around to sort of the boiler and I didn't know until I heard him working, having to hold off and remain as silent as possible until I was sure he had gone. Since he had to come around through the back gate it's a good thing I wasn't still doing photos in the garden!
Freightliner 70007 slogs through Freemantle with a well loaded 12.56 Southampton M.C.T. to Trafford Park (4m61).
The 'Pendle Dalesman' slogs up the S&C, the steam doing very little work as you can see a leak from below, steam puffing out with perhaps a leak from a gland supplying the central cylinder. The 47 on the back was doing most of the work. The steam was back in action a couple of weeks later, so the fault was fixed quickly, that's good. The hills behind catch the setting sun, making them look like the Sierra Nevada.

We slogged up San Giusto hill (Mont Sei Busi at Redipuglia) the highest point in Trieste to check out the WWI war memorial, Miramare Castle & Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire.
1 of 4.
First stop was a visit toCattedrale di San Giusto Martire
The current appearance of the Cathedral derives from the unification of the two pre-existing churches : the Church of Santa Maria and the Church dedicated to the martyr San Giusto, patron saint of the city of Trieste.
The gabled façade is characterized by a large double wheel rose window, a statue of San Giusto, coats of arms and a portal deriving from the cutting of a Roman funerary stele.
The bell tower, with a square plan, was originally higher, but in 1422, following a lightning bolt, its height was reduced to its current height.
The interior offers interesting traces of 5th century mosaic floors in front of the presbytery, while the apse is decorated with modern mosaics. The frescoes depicting the life of the Saint date back to the 13th century.
HE RUINS:
The ruins are the oldest vestiges of the city, the remains of an ancient building, from the Roman era (in the second century BC).
There is a stone base, columns & some still retain their capitals.
In the centre of the square, are the remains of the ancient basilica , one of the most important buildings of the ancient Roman cities.
The basilica, in ancient Rome, was the place where commercial affairs took place and where justice was administered. It was located in the forum , that is the main square of the city and Trieste's was right on the top of the hill of San Giusto.
Little remains of the ancient basilica as its material was reused for the construction of the first nucleus of the current. cathedral
This is the view looking toward the boat dock at the western end of Western Brook Pond. The boats that traverse the lake leave from this point. A large marsh separates the lake from the coastal road, so to get here you must trek three kilometers over a long footpath. It's worth the slog, however. The views are breathtaking.
