Gornergrat railway station, Canton of Valais, Switzerland.

The Gornergrat railway station is situated at an altitude of 3,089 m (10,135 ft), which makes the Gornergrat Railway the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau, and the highest open-air railway of the continent.

The Gornergrat is a starting point for many hikes, as it lies surrounded by 29 peaks rising above 4,000 m (13,123 ft) in the Alps.

It is also a popular skiing area. Also, it's one of my postcard!

Have a nice day everyone.

For the best. I was on the way home from work this evening and started to take notice of a possible nice sunset and some fog rolling in. I was hoping to reach an old house and get the fog with it but traffic took care of that. Then I thought about this place...

friend organized the photo shootXD

NS P87 slowly drops down the Old Fort Loops in the fog with empties for Bridgewater.

I was thinking to myself as I stood there after missing a northbound train by ten minutes. It's already the fourth day of the year and I have yet to get my first train of the new year.... *sigh*

The only car that I saw the whole time Besides myself this person was willing to bravve the elements.

One of many shots I took tonight. The conditions were terrible. Wind gust of over 55 miles per hour, which created white-out conditions. Because you couldn't see more than a few feet infront of your veficle you could run into car stopping snow drifts all along the Glenn Higjhway. Luckily I avooided getting stuck. I counted 11 vehicles that were not so fourtunate. Many of them abandoned in lanes of traffic. There were also sub-zero temperatures. My vehicles temperature reading said that it was -9F. With windchill it was more like -20F. Even with all the obstacles I still managed to make it just past Chickaloon to Long Lake. I only managed to capture the tail-end of what looked to be an amazing aurora show, but it was still pretty incredible!

Three specially painted units are visible as NS 744 navigates the Southern Loops in the mountains of North Carolina, hauling coal to plant Marshall in Sherills Ford, North Carolina.

After dropping my son off at I noticed that the clouds were starting to get a red tint to them. I knew that this meant we were in for a great sunrise. I raced home to grab my camera and then headed down Turnagain Arm. I had one spot in mind that I wanted to get to. I'll post that picture later. This shot I stopped to take because the darkness of night was slowly being taken over by the rising sun had really great contrast I couldn't pass up.

NS 136 rolls across the French Broad River in a light rain, just east of Hot Springs, NC.

Much of the River Line is beautiful and remote, but can be tricky to shoot without some effort.

On a local railroad trestle near me... that I really want to include in a shot somehow? ; )

With Mill Creek in the foreground, NS P87 rolls by the signals at Old Fort as it starts its run upgrade on the Loops.

You'll never forget a Turnagain Arm sunrise or sunset. Around 50 miles from, the beginning of Turnagain Arm, starting at Anchorage, to where it ends at Portage. Every mile is a golden photo oppritunity.

A tiny hamlet tucked away near Grindelwald. The clouds were rather spotty, giving crazy contrasts on the mountainside.

We were watching the sky, waiting for the aurora to show up. The little patch of color behind the trees is all we walked away with last night.

When you're night hiking in Alaska you sometimes don't need a headlamp. Beautiful display of aurora boeralis over the mountains of Hatcher Pass, Alaska

This was a cold winter night in Hatcher Pass, Alaska. This was shot shortly after the big 3-day snowstorm that crippled most of Anchorage area.

Last summer I spend the night on the Rhône-glacier camping. It can get spooky at night, but it is also extremely beautiful.

NS 136, the normal only daylight train on the River Line, rolls east through Del Rio with its train of primarily cars for the Canton, NC mill.

While the weather was crazy, with the almost tornado force winds. The snowdrifts that were created by the highwinds were a work of art. I only wish I had been able to capture more before my face and hands became too cold.

I ended up having to settle for a couple of rainbows. Five minutes later I was looking at this...

While I stand on the original Southern Railway alignment here, NS 135 rolls across Douglas Lake on the new alignment necessitated by Douglas Dam. This was a later than usual run for 135, which usually rolls through here pre-dawn.

The last sunset of 2022 captured from Campbell Creek Estuary located in Anchorage, Alaska

After a thunderstorm had just passed and the steam was rising from the tracks...

NS P87 rolls by the signals and old depot at Biltmore as it leaves Asheville with a short cut of chip empties.

With the snow still fresh on the ground, NS 741 blasts through on the wet rails with the Nickel Plate Road heritage leading.

NS 136 rolls east on NS's River Line at Wolf Creek along the French Broad River.

As darkness was coming fast. CSX F741 finally makes an appearance in the distance...

The auroras peeked out from behind the clouds so briefly we almost thought we imagined it.

The final sunset of 2022, for me. Now it's time to get ready for a new year.

NS 136 rolls east along the French Broad near Del Rio, TN.

This shot was taken on New Year's Eve. Newly discovered in a part of Anchorage, thanks to a tip from my father-in-law. For the most part, I had the place all to myself except for a moose that was roaming around in the woods to the right. My photographer's resolution for 2023 is to get out and explore more new places right here in the city of Anchorage. There are so many parks, buildings, and streets that, like this image, are completely new and beautiful to me. I've lived in Anchorage, off and mostly on, since the summer of 1983. Yet, I am to this day still discovering new and amazing things right here in the city. Wondering what I'll stumble upon next?

I was out taking sunrise photos this morning. On the way home I noticed the swans were a up early rooting around in the marsh. As I got out to practice my bird photography they suddenly stopped dipping they're heads below the water and started honking away. I knew from the previous experience that usually means they are getting ready to take off! So I excitedly got into position. A few minutes later they had positioned themselves at the edge of the water and started their not so graceful take off. Now I can check this off my photographers bucket list

Big Green Band

A big green band of solar activity stretches across the sky. It makes the oncoming vehicle's light minuscule in comparison. This was taken along the Glenn Highway during one of the worst windy winter storms in Southcentral Alaskan history.

To have a train come around that curve and out of the fog...
