Left over from quarrying near the top of Castle Crag.

This is one of Lakeland’s ancient pedestrian bridges, connecting the hamlet of Little Langdale with the many slate quarries in the Tilberthwaite area, including Cathedral Quarry and the Hodge Close Quarry.

In Little Langdale..

You can find me right on the edge of the beach, where the waves and the music meet.

A lovely old bridge in a lovely spot :-)

This terraced mountain decorated by Mother Nature stands behind the Llanberis Slate Museum in Wales. It was once part of the Dinowac slate quarry & supplied very high quality slates.

Slate mines, Llanberis. Total admiration for the men and women who worked in the mines. Incredibly hard life, difficult conditions, but what a view!

Another warbler that will not be coming our way. Confusingly -- like the Painted Redstart -- this warbler belongs to the family of Whitestarts. Tandayapa.

Cae’r Ddôl is a water meadow situated on the shores of Llyn Padarn in Llanberis. Following a reduction in grazing, this field is beginning to show signs of the diverse and beautiful wildflower meadow it could become.

Slate-colored Coot (also known as Andean Coot) fits the general pattern of coots in having black plumage. However, it ups the ante in that the bill and shield colours {which typically help identify coot species} are variable. Slate-colored Coot can present with white bill and yellow shield as in this case — the yellow appearing pale in this image. Or they can have yellow bill and reddish shield [the most common combination], or bill and shield both white. This individual was at the Pantanos de Villa wetlands in Lima, Peru, South America.

A 17th century bridge over the River Brathay. It is made of slate and has three spans. Thin rough voussoirs form a segmental arch, some projecting to both sides. To the north of the arch, two spans are

formed of single stones joined by a causeway.

I've posted many similar shots of this bridge, but I know that I haven't done this one before, there's a person in shot wearing a bright coat..:-)

More tunnels, you can see where the miners have drilled holes in some of the slate along the tunnels.

The slate in this mine, which is found in veins between layers of ancient Pre-Cambrian rocks, is among the oldest in the world. Many industrial towns in Britain and Ireland have the original roofs made of Llanfair slate. Descend Jacobs ladder and wonder through the tunnels and chambers, and look for the old drilling holes, and the likeness of a human face in the mighty no 6 cavern. As you emerge from the caverns, you face the breathtaking view of Cardigan Bay, from the Preseli mountains in the south to the Llŷn peninsula. Look down at Shell Island and the Artro estuary, and at low tide trace the fourteen mile long natural causeway of St Patrick.

Dinorwic Quarry

My first visit to Dinorwic Quarry and i wasn't disappointed. So much to see but also a place you have to respect and be aware of your surroundings. We stuck to the main paths the majority of the time but as people have said on here there is so much to discover and explore.

The impressive three-storeyed Ynysypandy slate-slab mill, and its surrounding yard, rail-access and water-supply system, was built to serve Gorsedda quarry in 1856-7 by the local contractor Evan Jones of Garndolbenmaen, probably to the design of the distinguished engineer James Brunlees. It is ingeniously planned so that the natural fall of the site assisted the manufacturing process. An internal pit accommodated an overshot water wheel, supplied by the Henwy stream, and on the south side a long curving ramp brought branches of the railway from Gorsedda quarry into the mill at two different levels, serving the middle and upper floors. The grand, round-headed openings are closely spaced like a Roman aqueduct, and derive from foundry practice. The eastern gable is surmounted by a decorative feature incorporating a false chimney stack, and the windows were at one time framed. It is one of very few architecturally ambitious buildings in the slate industry of Wales.

The mill specialised in the production of slate slabs for floors, dairies, troughs, urinals, etc. In its heyday, in 1860, it was producing over 2,000 tons per annum, but seven years later production was down to 25 tons per annum (due to the poor quality of the quarried slate) and the business went into liquidation in 1871.
