A rainforest is an area of tall, mostly evergreen trees and a high amount of rainfall. Rainforests are Earth’s oldest living ecosystems, with some surviving in their present form for at least 70 million years. They are incredibly diverse and complex, home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species—even though they cover just 6% of Earth’s surface. This makes rainforests astoundingly dense with flora and fauna. Rainforests’ rich biodiversity is incredibly important to our well-being and the well-being of our planet.
This beautiful stone footbridge once used by slate miners in the nearby quarry! Crosses the river just below Little Langdale Tarn in the Lake District...

Myioborus miniatus
(Slate-throated Redstart / Abanico pechinegro)
The Slate-throated Redstart is found from northern Mexico south to northern Bolivia, always in temperate montane habitats. In the north it lives in Pine-Oak forests, farther south in cloud forests and moist montane slopes.
It is a species which shows a high degree of geographic variation. In fact this largely grayish-blue bird with a dark chestnut cap has a striking red belly in the north, and in South America it is yellow-bellied, with orange-bellied forms in-between.

This is one of Lakeland’s ancient pedestrian bridges, connecting the hamlet of Little Langdale with the many slate quarries in the Tilberthwaite area, including Cathedral Quarry and the Hodge Close Quarry.

A few miles outside of L'Anse, Michigan, this waterfall is somewhat difficult to find but well worth the effort. It is on the Slate River . . . if we listen closely, we can hear the water going over the ledge.

Another slide restoration from the 1990s, this one showing the waste from slate mining in Wales.
Today of course, such waste is a valuable asset with many uses.

Moody day with this captured on a recent visit to the langdales in the lake district, managing to park near the local pub and true to form on this visit like many others this year not many days of sunshine.
Using only a firecrest polariser to reduce reflections here...
A slate coloured Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemali) in our Butterfly bush, waiting for it's turn at the suet feeder.
This one is nice to get, as we seldom see this variety.
Another slide restoration of a former welsh slate mining area, which I believe was open to the public at the time (mid-1980s) & in better Covid free times, may still be.

I have said to before, but i just don't know how they seem to thrive in those conditions , Nature, don't you just love it 👍
The two part Slater Bridge takes advantage of a central large rock and a very long slate slab to cross the River Brathay on its way from Little Langdale Tarn to Elterwater.
Dark slate was and is used to cover roofs, but also to clad entire houses. Slate arises in the transition area from diagenesis to rock metamorphosis.
