Downtown Business District, Seattle - building to left with Green dome - known as the “Roll-on” building
Took an architecture tour of Chicago by signing up for a Chicago River cruise. The cruise lasted about an hour, and we got to see many of the well-known skyscrapers in the downtown and near north parts of the city. It was a beautiful afternoon for taking pictures.
With Exchange Place and The Custom House in the background, this view of the Old State House really puts things in perspective. I’ve seen many old photos of the Old State House when it was easy to see from quite a distance. Today, you have to almost run into it before you realize you’re there.
The day I took this photo a couple from out of town walked up to me at about this same distance and vantage point. While looking and pointing at the Custom House and holding up a map, they asked if that was the “Old State House?” When I pointed down a little bit and said “no, that’s it” they were surprised they were looking right past it for almost 10 minutes and never saw it.

One is sometimes completely surrounded by the towering buildings of Chicago. I like the different levels captured in this image.
