Shrine of Remembrance - The northern tympanum

The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne has been commemorating the Centenary of Armistice this week, with the Shrine changing colour up until the 11th of November (After sunset and before sunrise). This image is a capture of the shrine before it changes to red in commemoration. The symbolism of the northern tympanum (Call to arms) is quite fascinating, have a look at the shrine website for more information.

Hey our friends at Skylum have a new photo contest. Go check it out at beautifulactphotoawards.com/ - It's kind of a fun contest because, for each photo you enter, they plant a tree somewhere around the world. I like trees. The area in this photo doesn't need any more trees, though... this photo happens to be from Cengdu, China.

Colonnades are a most fascinating game of perspective, rhythm, and light-shadow play. I love them and snap whenever I walk through one...

Tried several approaches with different tools (HDR and non-HDR) to address the extreme contrast of deep shadows and bright sunlight. From top row, left to right:

1. SooC, no processing at all. Thereafter the same perspective correction, followed by

2. Topaz Clarity

3. Oloneo PhotoEngine

4. Nik HDR effects

5. Skylum Luminar Flex

6. A balanced mix of the previous 4

It was fun :)

After spending time recording a deer family relaxing along the river (posted 3-images back), it was time to follow along a small trail up river to see what else I could find. After hiking up the trail for awhile, nothing seamed to work visually photographically for me. It was about this time that a metaphorical voice whispered in my ear "turnaround dumb ass". After a look up and a thank you, several compositions were captured with this one being the best.

So, my fellow photographers, when hiking around various areas, don't just look straight ahead all the time, do look around from where you came from also. You never know what you may find, especially if the light is making a painting for you.

Luminar 2018 was used for all of the processing except for a minor correction in Lightroom 5 weeks later, before posting and printing.

While driving along the Oregon coast, I stopped here in Cape Cove. The area is so pretty it's hard to take a bad picture.

The coastline has these massive rocks that are the remnants of an eroding mainland. I can imagine that ten-thousand years ago the land extended well beyond where it ends today. These are up and down the Pacific coast, and they make for good studies in geology and, in my case, photography.

I created this effect using an ND filter, which allows for a long exposure, even during daylight; this is a 20-second exposure. With that, the water appears smooth like glass. Also, the aperture is set to f22, which allows both the foreground and background rocks to be in focus, and it creates the star effect of the sun. Also, shooting right into the sun like this created lens flare, which in this case, I quite like.
