Skewer the spool with a chopstick (I used a small takeout one). Of course, you could use an actual skewer and then stick it into something (foam?) to make it stand up.

Bethany and I decided to make a Southwest feast for dinner. It included chicken nachos with a guacamole sauce, chicken skewers with peppers and tomatoes as well as banana caramel bread pudding for dessert. All the recipes came from one of my favorite cookbooks, Seasonal Southwest Cooking.
