Sketchnote of a short TED talk by Jean-Baptiste Michel in which he describes how mathematical analysis is being applied increasingly frequently to the subject of history, much of it due to the digitization of historical records.

My sketchnote of a very informative talk by Dr. Christine Porath on the problem of incivility in the workplace, its origins, and practical advice on dealing with it.

No, this is not about eating neutrons. But of course neutrons are in the nuclei of nearly everything on the periodic table so you do ingest them. This is a sketchnote of a talk given by Susana Teixeira of Keele University and the Institut Laue Langevin. In this talk she described how she's been using neutron scattering techniques and other methods to study certain properties of food at the molecular level. Here she focused (1) on the mechanism by which we detect sweetness, and (2) the means by which osteopontin, a protein produced in the body (including breast milk), helps prevent biomineralization. She described both parts of her talk at the outset as about cookies (sweetness) and milk (osteopontin). I couldn't resist adding those visuals to the sketchnote.

For an after-dinner talk I delivered to this year's CHRNS Neutron Spectroscopy Summer School attendees at NIST, I used a single visual. I made it into a presentation to be shown live in Tawe but unfortunately the A/V system did not work. So I had to give this talk without visuals projected on a screen. Fortunately I brought along enough printed copies for the attendees to follow along as I delivered my remarks. Whew!

Sketchnote of a Forbes article by Brent Dykes on the "essential data science skill everyone needs." I used this article in a recent workshop where the attendees made their own sketchnote based on the article's content.

Sketchnote of brief presentations as part of the NIST Technology Maturation Acceleration Program. The format was similar to "Shark Tank". And as a special bonus, I got to draw Predator (one of the projects involved IR sensing).

Sketchnotes from Chantal Forster's presentation on managing web projects. Interlab 2013.

Sketchnote of a marvelous NIST colloquium in which Jorge Cham (phdcomics.com) and particle physicist Daniel Whiteson talked about big questions for which we have no idea of the answers. They conveyed such excitement and enthusiasm for scientific exploration. Highly inspiring!

Sketchnote of the book titled “Play: How it shapes the brain, opens the imagination, and invigorates the soul” by Dr. Stuart Brown with Christopher Vaughn. This sketchnote is not a comprehensive summary of this wonderful book but rather a collection of the ideas that resonated the most with me. I found that there were a great many parallels between the state of play and the mindset I get in when I am making a sketchnote.

Sketchnote of John Barker's short talk today about the new capabilities of the NCNR's vSANS instrument. Great capabilities...and who knew that diamond is the best material for gravity-correcting prisms? Apparently the Hope diamond is too small for just one of our prisms!

Sketchnote summary of a paper by Mike Hore and colleagues on the properties (structure, composition, and spatial distribution) of ligands on gold nanorods when you do things like coat them with surfactants and graft polymer chains to them. The research appeared in the publication ACS Nanoletters.

"Stronger Together" - Sketchnote of Fr. Anthony F Krisak's homily this morning at 8:45 am Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church. Imagery ruled the day in Fr. Tony's homily where he described the strength of the growing Christian community (spelled out in today's reading from Acts) to the strength of an accumulation of snow. Though the snowflakes individually may exert nearly zero force, an accumulation can break a strong branch. So too with the Christian community in which a weak individual is individually strengthened by the rest.
