Sketching Stuff Challenge: Splash Some Color

This time Charlie O’Shields walks us through his painting of a paintbrush with a background of splashed color. I went off on a complete tangent though. I happened to have splashed color all over some paper for another project, when I saw the challenge, and knew this was meant to be my answer to it. Instead of sketching before color was added, I looked at what I had splashed and decided it was a dragon breathing fire.

Did you know there is Permanent Masking Fluid that doesn’t have to be removed from your painting? This painting was my first try with it. I’m not sure if I’ll review it or not. Sketching Stuff Challenge May 2025: Limited Colors.

Charlie O’Shields latest Sketching Stuff Challenge was to use limited colors and he walked through his method for painting a blue elephant.

I like to change things just a little because then I learn more so I did a blue pig instead of an elephant.

Did you know there is a breed of pigs called the Canterbury Blue, from New Zealand? It’s more of a gray, of course, but does have a blue cast in some lights.

Sketching Stuff Challenge March 2025: Sketch Some Nostalgia.

Charlie O’Shields challenge this time around was to paint something nostalgic. He walked us through his painting of a kitten next to an old Record Player.

I also have fond memories of my first record player but instead of kittens I had baby lions and tigers (my father worked at a zoo before they had nurseries, and if a mother refused to feed her babies they were sent home with one of the employees until they could eat solid food). I followed the steps to Charlie’s drawing but made my record player pink like my first player, and changed the kitten to a lion cub. The lion’s were cuter than the tigers (at first, anyway) and I could use the same colors that Charlie did for his kitten.

Did you know Bamboo stalks have air pockets that will expand and blow up when heated. It’s believed by many that Chinese travelers would carry bamboo to create noise and scare away wild animals, and from there the idea of fireworks was born.

#DoodlewashAugust2025 Prompt: National Park.

Did you know about 90% of a Bambiraptor skeleton was discovered in 1993 by a 14 year old who was out fossil hunting with his parents at the Glacier National Park?

Oh, permanent masking fluid, you are not gaining my respect. I mixed it with yellow watercolor for this painting. I waited a good 24 hours before painting over it. In some areas it did its job, in other areas it allowed some of the yellow to mix with color being painted over. I think this has to do with how much liquid is mixed with the paint. I tried to mix the two thoroughly and evenly, but there is no way to tell for sure. I also found that when I wet the mix to remove another color beading up, some of the mix lifted. So it could be how much water is in the brush when you paint over it.

Following in his shoes, I see myself more as the cassowary type. Though I’m heavier and less colorful in real life, I relate to color and at one time my hair color was almost this color of red (accidentally), but strangely it looked good on me.
