#DoodlewashOctober2025 prompt: Pierogi.

#Inktober prompt: Reckless.

October 18th is National Pierogi Day! My bull terrier is being reckless, stealing a pierogi (a good-sized one, too!)!

Did you know the Pierogi originated in medieval Poland but may have been brought there from the Ukraine? Ultimately, it was probably inspired from similar dumpling recipes that came out of China via the Silk Road.

#DoodlewashAugust2025 Prompt: Pet.

The latest Sketching Challenge newsletter is out and Charlie O’Shields walks us through painting a Pet Portrait of a Boxer. I like to change things a bit so I did a Mastiff, using his instructions. I fussed too much though, so I lost the spontaneity of Charlie’s instructions.

Charlie O’Shields painted a bowl of avocados for the second July Sketching Stuff Challenge. I like to change things up a bit so I painted a bowl of limes, while still pretty much following his steps. I don’t know? Do people eat bowls of limes? I’m allergic so I don’t really know, lol.

Sorry, I was about to head out for a picnic so I did this fast, and didn’t have time to look up a fact.

Did you know Sir Henry Cole is credited with creating the first Christmas Card in 1843, because he had too many friends? In Victorian, England it was a tradition to send a Christmas/New Year’s letter, and more people were observing this because the Penny Post stamp had made it easier and more affordable. It was considered rude not to respond to mail, and so he had a 1000 cards printed with a scene of a family at a festive table and Holiday Greetings. Problem solved, and a new tradition begun.

#DoodlewashAugust2025 Prompt: 10-Peridot.

#DoodlewashNovember2025 prompt: Red.

Did you know the red warbler is a cute little bird that happens to have poisonous feathers? There are a few other birds (and a dart frog) with this problem because the bugs they eat are poisonous. Actually, it isn’t a problem for them, because it protects them from predators. The females are believed to rub their feathers on their eggs to transfer the poison and the protection.

Did you know the bow tie started as a scarf that was part of the uniform worn by Croat soldiers in the Thirty Years War of the 1600s? After the war, fashion took the idea and it became the cravat. That eventually became either the necktie or the bow tie - there is debate over which came first.

#DoodlewashAugust2025 Prompt 3-Watermelon.

August 3 is National Watermelon Day! Did you know many cats like watermelon, and a little bit is usually safe for them? However, the seeds can cause digestive problems, some cats don’t digest any of it well, and only healthy cats should eat it at all. Best to discuss it with your vet before allowing your cat to eat any.

DoodlewashNovember2025 prompt: Umbrella & Feathers.

Did you know a ‘lek’ is a place where male birds of some species, like this long-wattled umbrellabird, gather at mating time to compete for the females? The males will have more competition, but also more safety in numbers from predators. While other species might also gather, to be considered lekking, the females choose based solely on physical display. While Dads from other species might help with raising the young, lekking species aren’t know for it.

Can't stop buying new colors, even if my stock of colors will reach until the rest of my life.

Sketching Stuff Challenge May 2025: Limited Colors.

Charlie O’Shields latest Sketching Stuff Challenge was to use limited colors and he walked through his method for painting a blue elephant.

I like to change things just a little because then I learn more so I did a blue pig instead of an elephant.

Did you know there is a breed of pigs called the Canterbury Blue, from New Zealand? It’s more of a gray, of course, but does have a blue cast in some lights.

DoodlewashNovember2025 prompt: Feathers. I decided to go with the whole bird and not just the feathers!

Did you know in the majority of bird species, their feathers are in rows called feather tracts, including turkeys? They have 8 tracts divided into around 100 groups. The bird can move the feathers using nerves and muscles that are connected to each group.

Sketching Stuff Challenge: Splash Some Color

This time Charlie O’Shields walks us through his painting of a paintbrush with a background of splashed color. I went off on a complete tangent though. I happened to have splashed color all over some paper for another project, when I saw the challenge, and knew this was meant to be my answer to it. Instead of sketching before color was added, I looked at what I had splashed and decided it was a dragon breathing fire.

#DoodlewashAugust2025 Prompt: National Park.

Did you know about 90% of a Bambiraptor skeleton was discovered in 1993 by a 14 year old who was out fossil hunting with his parents at the Glacier National Park?

Oh, permanent masking fluid, you are not gaining my respect. I mixed it with yellow watercolor for this painting. I waited a good 24 hours before painting over it. In some areas it did its job, in other areas it allowed some of the yellow to mix with color being painted over. I think this has to do with how much liquid is mixed with the paint. I tried to mix the two thoroughly and evenly, but there is no way to tell for sure. I also found that when I wet the mix to remove another color beading up, some of the mix lifted. So it could be how much water is in the brush when you paint over it.
