Did you know there are 3 theories about the origin of the term ‘Cup of Joe’?
One is that Joe was a term for the common man and coffee the drink of the common man. Another is that other slang terms for coffee, Java and Jamoke, were combined and shortened to Joe. The last is that when Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, banned alcohol on Navy Ships, in 1913, more coffee was consumed. The sailors began calling it ‘Joe’ in reference to the Secretary.

Slide to see Charlie O’Shield’s original version.
The challenge this time is to draw and paint a hummingbird and butterfly feeding at a flower. I mostly followed Charlie’s instructions but I think I learn more when changing things a bit so I did a different drawing and changed the colors on the butterfly a bit, plus added a little splatter for background.
And I screwed up on the butterfly wings because I didn’t wait for the paint to dry … er… I mean I did some totally on -purpose blending and layering on the wings. Whew! Almost let you know I make mistakes!

This time Charlie O’Shields walks us through his painting of a paintbrush with a background of splashed color. I went off on a complete tangent though. Instead of sketching before color was added, I looked at what I had splashed and decided it was a dragon breathing fire.

Did you know we always tend to use the word ‘horns’ or ‘antlers’, but there are four types of sharp, bony head protrusions in animals - antlers, horns, pronghorns, and ossicones? The main difference is the first three grow from the skull: antlers are shed annually, horns are permanent, pronghorns are horns that branch like antlers, while ossicones (such as giraffes, okapi, and saga antelopes have) start out as cartilage that fuses to the skull and becomes horn.

Sketching the first thing you see can present some challenges. The first thing I saw was my cell phone, all dark and really not that interesting. Sketching Stuff Challenge March 2025: Sketch Some Nostalgia.
Charlie O’Shields challenge this time around was to paint something nostalgic. He walked us through his painting of a kitten next to an old Record Player.
I also have fond memories of my first record player but instead of kittens I had baby lions and tigers (my father worked at a zoo before they had nurseries, and if a mother refused to feed her babies they were sent home with one of the employees until they could eat solid food). I followed the steps to Charlie’s drawing but made my record player pink like my first player, and changed the kitten to a lion cub. The lion’s were cuter than the tigers (at first, anyway) and I could use the same colors that Charlie did for his kitten.
