The Matthew, urban sketching doorways, Boston
In response to this week's prompt from Boston Urban Sketchers Group: doors. I drive by this building regulary and I can't figure out why those mini columns are there. They serve no purpose archetectually or structurally but I think the entryway is a charming oddity.

ahh edge detection. i remember writing this thing in architecture to do it and wondering what use it would really serve. i guess this is it.
I seem to be doing more sketching again. This will be glued into my journal when I get around to it.
We stopped along the road so my husband could talk to his brother. They stood in one position for quite a while or I never would have been able to sketch this much. I'm really slow.
I didn't do a very good job on my brother-in-law's,face. I need more practice with faces. I think I did a fair job of getting my husband's posture right.

The seventh workshop in our series sought to contrast two methods of subject commonly used in creating art. Whether your work from Reference photos, direct observation, or some hybrid has long been a heated debate. With this workshop, we wanted to explore the various benefits and drawbacks of both methods. Attendees were asked to create two sketches, the first was from a photo reference of a still life scene and the second was from direct observation. During the review at the end of the workshop, the jury remained split on which method they preferred; perhaps this debate will never be settled, but the creative individuals at Dreyfuss + Blackford Architecture will certainly continue to search.
Mr. Wisnia and I teamed up for a sketch at Comic Con 2009. He drew a part and covered it up. I then built up on the lines that were peeking out from the covered portion. The result is this surreal masterpiece in the hands of a happy fan.

A sketch rather than a finished piece, sketched at church. A face drawing doesn't always have to be a front view. What do you think?
