Been sorting throuhg some of the piles of sketches that seem to mount up over time, thought it would be an idea to document them all on here, incase the old homestead burns to the ground,

they would no doubt be the first thing ide save though, housemates would be a close second

I drew this up the morning of the Web 2.0 Expo edition of the Checking the 'Feel' of UI presentation. First I showed just the middle part -- the close up of the face -- while I was talking about how a single frame in an animated sequence lacks meaning when viewed in isolation. Then the other parts faded up, illustrating how meaning is found when you can see what comes before and after.

I was pretty happy with it until my wife pointed out that cinder blocks have 2 holes, not just 1. Ah well. That's what comes from cartooning before coffee.

Sketching about the body and food in an art history class. I want to do a down-and-dirty series of drawings or prints of body/food/building hybrids. We shall see.

You know that long line of people waiting to get up to the top of the towers on Notre-Dame in Paris? Well, I was in it, standing against the cast-iron fence with my back to the church, and I started drawing the houses on the side street right across from the church. We were lucky: they cut the line a few people beyond us and we were among the last ones to make it to the top of the towers on that day. There is a photo Valérie took of me just as I am in the process of drawing. (07-07)

One of the things I really love about sketches in general is the way they – by necessity of time, circumstance, and place – seem to become a sort of shorthand for much more complex ideas and details. I’ve always appreciated the brevity some artists have, the way they can coerce a single line into speaking volumes, into communicating so much. Very occasionally I’ll see a hint of that evident in one of my sketches, but more frequently than not they’re just amused scribblings of the moment.

I joined the Salem Sketchers this morning at the Mt. Angel Abbey. It has a small museum hidden away at the back of one of the buildings. Among its collections is a world class display of taxidermy. It was hard to choose from so many, but from my one vantage point I did these guys - polar bear, caribou, musk ox, and big horned sheep.
