This morning, I sketched this elm tree, using colored pencil sticks. There aren't many elm trees around anymore, but there were elm trees planted around the house I am painting for my friends. I have a black and white photo of those trees, but there are only a few leaves on the branches. But my friends have sent me some photos, and I used my phonecam to take pictures of an elm tree that found by accident while I was out walking one morning. I like the colors the sun makes on a tree and the play of light and shadow on the ground.

I want to paint a picture of Bell to give to Dr. Kendra (the vet who cared for Bell) as a gift for all she's done and for her care. This is going to be my first ever painting of Bell and I think it will be good therapy for me too. However, I'm not quite sure how to do the background, I know I want to put at least some purple in there as I have purple as Bell's color, I also want to do some grass. The reference picture I'm using is from roughly 3 years ago when she was about a year old, it's one of my favorite photos of her.
If you all have any suggestions on the background that would be wonderful.

He was sketching the Simon Benson House at Portland State University (in downtown Portland) while I was shooting it. From this angle, you can't see that he's sitting on a fire hydrant.
I'm sorry that I have not had time to visit your photostreams lately. I'm trying to finish a work project and get ready for a weekend in San Francisco. Hopefully, I can get back to normal next week. In the meantime, I'll turn off comments, so just enjoy!

Quick sketches while I was in a long phone meeting. I had the idea to try make "notans", sketches of how black fields relate to white, but didn't succeed, i kept wanting to have a mid-tone. I'll have to read up on it, see if there is some thinking-trick to use
