Tiny European paper wasp visiting my birdbath.
Common during a hot afternoon. This species has rapidly become established across the lower part of Michigan. Nests may be found in almost any protected situation, even wheel wells of vehicles. There is some indication that this species has outcompeted our native Polistes in suburban habitats.
The dormant season is fast approaching here but some of the summer flowers are still blooming. Fortunately we do have flowers throughout the winter season so the hummingbirds are year-round residents. Their backup for food are my 3 feeders around the patio.
There is quite a bit of activity at the backyard butterfly bushes lately, as many species of bees, butterflies, and other insects stop by to drink the sweet nectar. This is a Snowberry Clearwing moth sipping nectar from a butterfly bush flower. The black legs indicate that this is a Snowberry Clearwing rather than the very similar Hummingbird Clearwing. Backyard photography.
Happy Mother's Day everyone. Thanks for your many visits and kind words!! Have a wonderful day.ps. out of camera, no texture
I've been chasing this Bumbles to get a BIF shot, but not this time. I'll settle for his beautiful wing display
Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja)
This is a youngster as he still has those soft, pink hues across the entire wing and his head is still covered with feathers.
