Why a NARDI?

The story begins in the 1960s. Enrico Nardi was a designer who collaborated with the young coachbuilding firm MOTTO. In November 1959, he was visited in his workshop by one of the biggest VW-Porsche dealers in the US, Hubert Brundage. He spotted a drawing of a tubular chassis for a "hypothetical" Formula Junior.

Brundage ordered two of these cars with a VW engine and sent them to Italy as VW-BEETLE 4s. But due to a lack of power, only the typical VW front suspension and gearbox were kept. The heavy engine cover that originally concealed the engine was removed. The car won several races in Florida and Nassau, but VW management forbade the dealer from racing “specials” built with VW parts.

Brundage sold the car for a symbolic dollar to Bill Duckworth and George Smith of Orlando, who intended to build new Formula cars with VW engines in fibreglass: thus, the Formula VEE was born! Once approved, the car successfully raced for several years in the US and Europe.

The foundation of all these FORMULA-V cars is the single-seater tubular structure created in 1959 in the design studio of Enrico Nardi, likely in collaboration with Carrozzeria Motto. Our Formula Junior is a prototype later modified by Garuti with a Fiat 1100 engine and VW gearbox.

The Vitex or Chastetree is a large deciduous shrub or small tree that can have single or multiple trunks. The tree produces blue-purple flower spikes from May until the first frost. The leaves are a gray-green color, which change in color to yellow in the fall. This tree is very fast growing and is drought tolerant.

come'on, Facebook! where are all the 29 year olds at?!

ps: anyone else seeing these at the same absurd frequency? especially this super busty one?

Single Exposure, 260 Seconds,

Any advice / constructive criticism welcome (I'm new to the game!), thanks!

We never know what we will see as we return home. Last Friday we saw lots of people in fancy dress, today it was a chap riding his unicycle, he was getting along much faster than the traffic. I'd like to say that the composition was deliberate but I can't as it was a happy accident.

Press releas: Summary

Project status: Current

Region/county: South-east Wales

Start date: End 2014

End date: 2019

Cost: Total project costs circa £220m

Design and build contractors: Costain Ltd, with Atkins, Ch2M & RPS

This project is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (external link).

Why are we doing it

The existing A465 was built in the 1960s and is a single three lane carriageway with two lanes in the uphill direction and one in the downhill direction. A regional traffic study in 1990 identified the need to improve this road. This improvement to the A465 is critical to the social and economic regeneration of the Heads of the Valleys area.

The width of the road restricts traffic flow and opportunities for safe overtaking. In many areas there is poor visibility. Accidents on this stretch are concentrated around junctions and areas with poor visibility

This improvement to the A465 is critical to the social and economic regeneration of the Heads of the Valleys area. It will improve access to key services, jobs and markets supporting inward investment to areas such as the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone.

Current progress

Some of the construction progress to date includes:

2 new bridges at Glanbaiden roundabout have been completed and will be open to traffic soon.

The concrete arch bridge at Gilwern has been erected and the traffic is running through the arch. This bridge is the largest of its type in the world.

The footbridge at Gilwern has been lifted into place and will soon be open for use.

Extensive work has been carried out along the length of the scheme to steepen the surrounding ground and enable widening of the carriageway.

The works have included the construction of 6200m of retaining walls to date and installation of over 6000 soil nails.

The 2 road bridges at Saleyard are nearing completion. These will be open for traffic use before the end of 2017.

A total of 33 diversions to Statutory Undertaker apparatus (water mains, gas mains, phone lines and electricity supplies etc.) have been completed. These have included major diversions work to two high pressure gas mains and a water main that required a new 1.5m wide, 100m long tunnel at a depth of 20m below the surface.

The treatment of a number of old mine workings uncovered near the Brynmawr junction.

The abutments for the Gateway Bridge at bridge at Brynmawr have been completed. Work will begin on the crossing structure at the end of Summer 2017.

Over 4000 trees have been planted within the scheme footprint.

How we consulted

We consulted on improvements to the A465 between Abergavenny and Hirwaun in 1994 as part of the process to develop the preferred route for the whole project.

In 2011 we held a series of public information exhibitions, presentations to local interest groups and meetings with local landowners and businesses We gathered information at these events to help the team understand how this section fit with local priorities, objectives and policies. This influenced the scheme design.

We held exhibitions of the draft orders in November 2013. These provided details of the final scheme which we then took through the statutory planning process.

An independent inspector held a public local inquiry in March & April 2014, where supporters and objectors to the scheme were able to present their case.

Alternative routes proposed by objectors were considered in a public inquiry alongside our published scheme.

330-PS-7618 (USN 709533): U.S. Navy PBM-5 aircraft testing the hydro-ski on water landings and takeoffs at Chesapeake Bay, near Baltimore. The hydro-ski is located on the hull slightly forward of the plane’s center of gravity. Tests are being conducted in three positions, with the hydro-ski fixed on a rigid strut close to the hull, partially extended and fully extended. These tests marked the first time the hydro-ski was applied to a seaplane in the patrol bomber category (PBM-5 gross weight is 55,000 lbs). The purpose of the tests is to decrease the impacts encountered during rough water landings and take-offs and is expected to demonstrate that the rigid ski mounted on a single strut extending downwards perpendicularly from the hull acts as a better “shock absorber” for the seaplane landing than the conventional “vee” bottom hull. The ski is located slightly forward of the plane’s center of gravity and has been undergoing tests in three different positions, close to the hull bottom, partially extended and fully extended. The purpose is to determine the best compromise position for the ski, which offers a better shock absorber effect than fully extended, but less aerodynamic and water resistance when only partially extended. Photograph released December 12, 1955. (2/18/2015).

"Bourgeois produced a large series of soft sculptures in her later years, making use of textiles and old clothing that she had kept for decades. This headless suspended figure made of stuffed fabric is posed in the ‘arch of hysteria’, a position expressing an extreme state of tension and pain documented by the nineteenth century French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot."
