Shore Acres State Park is a state park south of Coos Bay. The park features 5 acres of formal gardens including a rose-testing plot and Japanese lily pond. Shore Acres was originally an estate owned by Louis J. Simpson, a Coos County timber baron and son of shipping magnate Asa Meade Simpson. After fire and financial losses devastated his estate holdings, Simpson sold the land to the State of Oregon for use as a park in 1942.

Simpsons Creek is one of the creeks that flows into Lake Haupiri on the northeastern end.

Typical of many West Coast creeks, it is surrounded by regenerating beech forest, and its waters are stained with tannins and topped with natural organic foam, the remains of dead algae and other aquatic organisms.

The channel country, out by the Big Red sand dune, changes dramatically when rain arrives, or when run-off from distant storms makes its way to Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre in the centre of the continent. Wildflowers proliferate and the growth of grasses show why the region supports some of the best beef cattle in the country.

On a whim we headed up to parts unknown, the Shelton, WA area. Here we stumbled upon the afternoon run of the lumber train down the hill.

I saw that Bayne Gardner had added another Simpsons character to the alley wall at The Crypt so I ran down there this morning just in time for some welcome rain.

The Birdsville Roadhouse is combined with a mechanical workshop and refuelling station.

Birdsville Roadhouse’s huge, ominous looking ex German army MAN truck gets lots of attention from visitors when it’s parked outside the workshop. ‘Mad Max-like’, more than a few people have said. At three metres tall, two and a half metres wide and with tyres that are over one metre high, it’s intimidating in comparison to the four-wheel-drives it towers over. For a fee, the truck regularly rescues stranded vehicles that break down while crossing the Simpson Desert.

Built in 1979 as a supply truck for the German army, it’s had an interesting life. Full details on birdsville roadhouse
