On a whim we headed up to parts unknown, the Shelton, WA area. Here we stumbled upon the afternoon run of the lumber train down the hill.
I saw that Bayne Gardner had added another Simpsons character to the alley wall at The Crypt so I ran down there this morning just in time for some welcome rain.

The Birdsville Roadhouse is combined with a mechanical workshop and refuelling station.
Birdsville Roadhouse’s huge, ominous looking ex German army MAN truck gets lots of attention from visitors when it’s parked outside the workshop. ‘Mad Max-like’, more than a few people have said. At three metres tall, two and a half metres wide and with tyres that are over one metre high, it’s intimidating in comparison to the four-wheel-drives it towers over. For a fee, the truck regularly rescues stranded vehicles that break down while crossing the Simpson Desert.
Built in 1979 as a supply truck for the German army, it’s had an interesting life. Full details on birdsville roadhouse
Simpsons figures in someone's front yard. I only saw the donations box after scrutinizing the photo. If this was your yard (proof required), let me know and I'll send you a donation.

This Photo has always been one of my favourites. Other photos I’ve taken come and go, however this one always remains. I love the expanse of the tree branches, and the texture of the bark. I also love the depth within this photo as it heads deeper into the gap. Just on the term photo, this vista is actually a composition of 24 individual photos taken to capture the entire scene from the bark in shadow to the blue sky almost directly into the sun. The fact that is was so difficult to shot, could also be a reason why it means what it does to me. I had an idea of what I wanted to do, and how I wanted to compose the scene, but wasn’t sure it would work. So I was over the moon when it all came together so beautifully.
Simpsons minifigures have landed! I wasn't going to get these, but I really wanted Itchy and Scratcy... as you can see, attempt one did not get me Itchy or Scratchy, but a whole bunch of others. All of these had unique dot/bump codes, which helped me avoid doubles. I'll give it another go at the weekend.

SM23 SOn is a Mercedes-Benz Tourismo new to Simspon, Rosehearty in March 2023.
It is seen here in Edinburgh operating Scottish Citylink service M92A to Aberdeen.
From the crest of the last sand dune as we drive in from the Finke Road.
And the Flickr map gives the correct name and location!
This had been a wet year, following on from a less wet 2015.
We will need a drought for awhile to attract us to another attempt to cross the Simpson via The Rig Road.
Waddi Trees (Acacia peuce)
Waddi trees (Acacia peuce) only grow in three places; The Mac Clarke Conservation Reserve on Andado Station in the Northern Territory, and near Birdsville and Boulia in Queensland. They’re a rare and ancient species, with spiky, needle-like leaves and thick bark (the word ‘peuce’ is of Greek derivation and means Opine). Waddi trees grow to about 9m or 10m tall, and may live for as long as 1000 years. They have yellow wood with a bright red core.
The explorers Burke and wills reported seeing these trees in 1861. William John Wills’ diary for January 8, 1861, says: “We passed one or two little sites of sand and pebbles, on which were growing some trees quite new to me; but for the seed pods, I should have taken them for a Casuarina, although the leaf stalks have not jointed peculiarities of those plants, the trunk and branches are like the She-oak, the leaves like those of a pine, they droop like a Willow, and the seed is small, flat in a large flat pod about six inches by three - quarters of an inch.”
Wills collected samples of the seeds. They were found buried with his diary after his death.
Aboriginal use of the wood
Aborigines were aware of the extreme hardness of waddi wood and used it in a number of ways. Sticks were used as digging tools for yams and to cut away bark to remove possums hiding in hollows in trees while hunting. Sticks were also used as weapons. Stones were used to grind their ends to a sharp point –a laborious task. Larger pieces of wood were used as dishes for pounding seeds and for carrying fire. Because the wood was so hard, it would smoulder for a long time. Pieces were placed in a coolamon carrying dish, and transported with the group as they moved.
Hard wood
European settlers found the hardness of waddi wood useful for fencing posts. Some old fenceposts originally used more than 90 years ago, have been found to be still usable when building new fences. Even after so long, the wood has shown little sign of decay. But tough timber is scarce in the west, waddi wood is of little use for building. It is so hard it has been known to damage axes and saws that were used on it. When it dries, it is so hard it is almost impossible to drill.

Harper’s Bazaar August 007 ~ “The Simpsons go to Paris with Linda Evangelista” “Models”: The Simpsons, Linda Evangelista, and various designers with Illustrations by Julius Preite. Marge lets down her hair for Versace. Lisa gives up her pearls for Alber Elbaz. Homer dresses as Karl Lagerfeld. Selma & Patty in Viktor & Rolf. Maggie rides around in Jean Paul Gaultier’s Birkin Bag. Quite possibly the most incredible fashion spread i’ve seen (ok maybe tied with the Marie Antoinette Vogue spread?). To see the spread, see the pics below, and for some great animated versus reality pics of the dresses and designers.

The Simpson Farm has several hundred old cars, trucks, tractors, and even fire engines parked in neat rows with over 20 acres of open fields. It's an amazing place to photograph.

I absolutely, positively, supremely lovelovelovelove Cody Simpson to death. I went to look up pictures of him on Tumblr and guess what I found. A bunch of Bielibers bashing on him for wearing the same-squared-GLASSES. Like, really? Are you kidding me? They're just glasses. Get a hold of yourself, Bielibers.
