Pattern: Simplicity 2250

Blogged here.

A new direction.

For me and my photography.

The minimalism, the details. Life is empty.

I hope it's better...

Made as part of Tabatha's April Challenge. This is the second version as the first was too big. I also lengthened the bodice by 2".

Gnanasundaram Kuganathan is a man of simplicity.

A protest was organised by Free Media Movement (FMM), Sri Lanka Tamil Media Alliance (SLTMA), Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum (SLMMF), Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA), Federation of Media Employees Trade Union (SLMETU),Media Movement for Democracy (MMD) and South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA).Nearly 47 journalists from Colombo traveled to Jaffna by A9 highway to show solidarity. They condemned the brutal assault by protesting in front of the Sri Lanka Transport Board bus stand in Jaffna on 16th of August 2011. It was a rare protest for the Peninsula people to witness. “ஏதாவது பிரச்சினையோ?” ~ “Is there any problem?”, “என்ன பிரச்சினை?” ~ “What is the problem?”, “இங்கை என்ன நடக்குது?” ~ “What is happening here?” a few onlookers, passers ~ by and shop keepers asked me while the protest was getting underway on a balmy day in Jaffna. “இங்கை உண்மையா என்ன நடக்குது? ~ “What is actually happening here” asked the owner of a newly built restaurant, while I was running to the restaurant roof top to capture the moments on my camera.

There was chaos as the protesters arrived in Jaffna town with placards in Tamil. Police in the vicinity came closer and asked them not to block the traffic. Verbal argument took place between the Police and the protesters. But the protesters kept chanting and walking. The traffic came to a standstill for a couple of moments, as the protesters took the space on the mot busiest road in Jaffna, the Hospital road while carrying the placards in Tamil ~ “யாழ்ப்பாண ஊடகவியலாளர்களுக்கு யார் பாதுகாப்பு?” ~ “Who is responsible for the lives of the journalists in Jaffna?”, “ஊடக சுதந்திரம் பாதுகாக்கப்பட வேண்டும்” ~ “Media freedom needs to be protected”, “எப்போ முடியும் யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் அடக்குமுறைகள்?” ~ “When will the suppression come to an end in Jaffna?”, “ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தைப் பாதுகாக்க ஒன்றுபடுவோம்” ~ Let’s unite to protect media freedom”, “குகநாதனுக்கு விழுந்த அடி உண்மைக்கு விழுந்த பேரிடி”~ Assault on Kuganathan is an assault on the Truth, “ஊடகத்துறைக்கு எதிரான அடக்குமுறையை ஒழிப்போம்” ~ Eradicate Suppression Against the Media” “ஊடகத்தின் மீதான தாக்குதலை உடனே நிறுத்து” ~ “Stop Attacking the Media Immediately”, “ஜனநாயகத்தின் குரலை ஒடுக்காதே” ~ “Don’t Suppress the voice of Democracy”, “தேர்தலில் தோற்றவர்களா மண்டையைப் பிளந்தார்கள்?” ~ “Did they split the head those who lost the elections?”

The protesters chanted “Let Us Write”,“Continue; Continue; Continue to Write”,“Do Not Kill; Do Not Kill; Do Not Kill Us; Do Not Kill the Journalists, Do Not Kill the Democracy”,“Uthyan was attacked, but nobody was arrested”, “Bring the culprit to the courts”“Do Not Attack; Do Not Attack; Do Not Attack the Media”, “Take Your Hands Off Media”“Stop; Stop; Stop the Suppression” “Kuganathan; Kuganthan who wrote the plight of the people”, “Kuganathan was attacked with Iron rods”,“Kuganathan; Kuganathan; Keep Writing, “Lift the Emergency Immediately” in Tamil and Sinhala. There were nearly 350 journalists, activists and politicians participated in the protest according to the organisers.

This is a picture of simplicity. The phone is the mane emphasis of the picture.

I love shoulder tucks. You have to be super skinny and flat-chested to wear something like this, but it's cute.

I made the wrap version, with the short sleeves and the belt.

The fabric is a cotton voile from Westminster Fibers, in a colorway that is ideal for someone with three black and white dogs.

I thought the fabric would be too sheer to wear without a slip or lining but it turns it's absolutely fine without, which is great. This a perfect summer dress.

Simplicity Designer's pattern 8131

A school counselor and therapist realizes while in private practice in Britain that he was prescribing basically the same treatment for the kids he was seeing as he had for the war impacted children suffering from post traumatic stress in refugee camps in Jakarta and along the Thai-Cambodian border where he had spent the earlier part of his career. This realization gave him insight into what he realized was a war on childhood. The constant input of horrific news from CNN and the total randomness of events in a child's life, their schedules at the behest of two working parents changing plans as quickly as a cell phone call can make it happen, not to mention the demands of their own over scheduled lives leaving no time to just be and develop an inner life amounted to an erasure of space for normal childhood development.

In his book Simplicity Parenting, I was gratified to have it confirmed that what I was observing in the homes of children was true. An excess of stuff was having a serious impact on children's lives. The author goes as far as to say that such excess would push children towards symptoms of ADHD. He and another therapist have been conducting research in America and Canada. "In our study of children with serious symptoms of ADHD we found that when we simplified their lives they returned to a reachable and teachable state. They emerge from "amygdala hijack"…" Not only that the children also experienced a 36.8% increase in academic and cognitive ability which is not true of drug therapy.

As a result he spends quite a lot of time helping parents de-clutter and describes this process in step by step detail through the first third of his book. Music to my professional organizer's ears.

He also tells the stories of children who, once unburdened of the need to cope with too many toys, can finally sit and play with them. This includes a sibling conflict that arises when one sister is trying to organize everything neatly and her brother is trying to destroy everything. He realized that each sibling was expressing their individual ways of coping with overwhelm. Once the excess stuff was gone they could finally play side by side with the toys they loved.

He then goes on to talk about rhythm, schedules and rituals; these all create an environment that assures children that their world is reliable. He talks about creating a rhythm in the day that can be relied upon as well as daily rituals to mark the parts of the day at bedtime and when getting ready for school. Coupled with the filtering of input from the outside world this allows children to exist in a protected space. He talks about the over scheduling of children and mentions the excess of practice for sports and martial arts taking up all the children's free time as well as putting a priority on competition as a life strategy.

He introduces the term Soul Fever meaning an emotional rough patch parallel to a physical fever and suggests bringing the child into retreat from the world in a calming home space or out in nature. He talks about the gift of boredom and how to control the excess of technology. He suggests that children not be allowed any screen time i.e. TV, i-Pad, games before the age of seven. HIs research addresses the developing brain and brain plasticity.

Interestingly he also tells parents to stop with the ceaseless chatter, the endless commentary on what the child is doing. I had no idea this was how parents were talking to children and just reading about it made me feel suffocated. He offers a 3 point direction for conversational guidelines for directing children's chatter too. These points are "is it true, is it kind and is it necessary".

I have no experience with children in any setting except for my weekly karate school classes, but reading this book confirmed for me that I have quite a bit of innate knowledge just from what I found to be good in my own childhood with the daily rhythms and rituals of my life in a simpler time running on a schedule like clockwork.

Indeed there are so many tips in this book and case studies illustrating how parents were able to change their lifestyle and what they gained from it that it offered me a real glimpse into the parenting world and gave me confidence in offering his suggestions to my clients based on my own observations or actually talking to children myself.

One of the six rules, Simplicity

This pattern will make a sleeveless blouse, jamaican length shorts and a cute wrap-around skirt. The blouse has a convertible collar and button front closing. Patch pockets are on the blouse front. The shorts have a pocket in the right side seam and a left side zipper closing. The wrap-around skirt has a back-button closing. This is a great pattern!
