Tried going for a simple portrait. And I had to do some processing in Lightroom to get it decent looking since I just used a Coolpix.
One thing that I forgot to mention in my post about J was something that he said at the end of a drinking bout that lasted until morning: "Naoki I really like you, but I hate the Japanese". I was for the first time in a country where the country of my origin had caused deliberate suffering. I didn't know what to reply to J but it made me even more conscious that I had to be extremely careful of what I said. Growing up as a child of immigrants in Europe I have always been conscious that my very presence could be the cause of undesired reactions but being in China I had to raise my level of alertness incomparably higher. I was vigilant in voicing my opinions and my answer to the common question "what do i think of china and the chinese" was always irrefutably positive (I must add that my experiences with most of the people I got to know in China were characterised by overwhelming hospitality and people would go to great lengths to counterbalance my praise on China with praise on Japan).
I just wish that I was a little more intelligent and not just paranoid. When A asked me what I thought of the Chinese my instinctive answer was that they were wonderful people and I was having a great time in China. His ambiguous smile promptly reminded me that I was in the Xinjiang province where ethnic minorities were in large measure oppressed by the Han Chinese. The family was Kyrgys. I cursed my inanity.
We got into the beds one next to the other while still warm from the simple dinner of rice soup that T had cooked on the hearth. I was reading a book with my headlight when I heard a car approaching and then stopping right next to the house. There was a knock on the door and before A could even get up four men in military attire walked in and ordered me to show my papers. I handed my passport which was thrown back at me after a glance by one of the military men who merely commented "no good". A mixture of anger and panic was beginning to kick in but A, who was by then dressed, began to talk to them and only after a few exchange of words was led out and taken away in their car. T and her son exchanged looks of impotent anxiety but soon recovered and told me "no problem" and gestured me to go to bed.
A didn't come back for nearly two hours during which his wife waited impatiently, walking out of the door every ten or so minutes only to come back after a while. After he came back and had time to talk to his wife, I asked him if everything was alright and he said "yes, no problem" with eyes of enduring kindness. He explained to me that there was a hotel run by Han Chinese in the Karakul lake and whenever they find out that there is a visitor staying at some other place the hotel punctually asks the military men to got to where ever the visitors are to extort money from the host. I struggled to sleep, not being able to forget A's smile to my answer about the Chinese.
