Easter Vigil at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral
Photos by Billy Hardiman/CATHOLIC SUN
Catholics have been preparing for Easter through 40 days of Lent, culminating in the Easter Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Vigil of Easter on Saturday night.
We wait in darkness, bless a fire, process with candles, and hear re-told the stories of our salvation through the scriptures. The emphasis is on waiting for the culmination of the story: Christ’s resurrection from the dead. Bells are rung, and alleluias are sung as we hear the gospel account of Christ’s rising. Then, following this proclamation of the core of our beliefs, new members are brought into the Church through baptism and a profession of faith. The recounting of Christ’s new life is closely connected to the Church’s renewal through the reception of its new members. (Source: foryourmarriage.org)

Simon Bradstreet (baptized March 18, 1603/4 – March 27, 1697) was a colonial magistrate, businessman, diplomat, and the last governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Arriving in Massachusetts on the Winthrop Fleet in 1630, Bradstreet was almost constantly involved in the politics of the colony but became its governor only in 1679. He served on diplomatic missions and as agent to the crown in London, and also served as a commissioner to the New England Confederation. He was politically comparatively moderate, arguing minority positions in favor of freedom of speech and for accommodation of the demands of King Charles II following his restoration to the throne.
Bradstreet was married to Anne, the daughter of Massachusetts co-founder Thomas Dudley and New England's first published poet. He was a businessman, investing in land and shipping interests. Due to his advanced age (he died at 93) Cotton Mather referred to him as the "Nestor of New England". His descendants include the famous jurists Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. and David Souter.
The Charter Street Burial Ground, started in 1637, also known as "Old Burying Point" or the "Charter Street Cemetery", is the oldest cemetery in Salem. Many early and famous Salem residents are buried here, such as Jonathan Corwin and John Hathorne, both judges in the Salem witch trials of 1692 and Samuel McIntire, Salem's great woodcarver. Another famous gravestone is of the only Mayflower passenger buried here, a Capt. Richard More.
Simon has recently bought Preston Guild Hall for £1 Million to save it from closure by the council. I met him to talk about the deal and take his picture.

Simon Schama ostensibly giving a reading from his new book Scribble, Scribble, Scribble at the Harvard Book Store. He never actually opened the book, offering instead an erudite, wide-ranging, and delightful discourse on -- among other things -- the essay (Hazlitt, Orwell, M.F.K. Fisher), wine-writing, historiography, historian J.H. Plumb (whom he called Jack), critic F.R. Leavis, Winston Churchill, Barack Obama, and even this year's cold, damp spring in the Northeast -- an "eventual" spring, he called it.

More different stuff. And in black and white too! Who said I`d been in a comfort zone!?!
This is Simon, another professional model shot at Studio 3 with lots of help.
This was a great day. I am already planning my next shoot there.
A nod to rawprints for his idea of monochrome; thanks.
Having realised that we seemed to be no closer to our destination than when we set out, a unilateral decision was taking to return. We seem pretty happy about it.

Simon (Shimon), my great grandfather. I can't say when it was taken, but he died in 1917 aged 78. The next two photos in the set show his Naturalisation Certificate. He came from Eastern Europe, I think in the 1860s, and became a British citizen in 1887.
