Simon Schama ostensibly giving a reading from his new book Scribble, Scribble, Scribble at the Harvard Book Store. He never actually opened the book, offering instead an erudite, wide-ranging, and delightful discourse on -- among other things -- the essay (Hazlitt, Orwell, M.F.K. Fisher), wine-writing, historiography, historian J.H. Plumb (whom he called Jack), critic F.R. Leavis, Winston Churchill, Barack Obama, and even this year's cold, damp spring in the Northeast -- an "eventual" spring, he called it.

St. Simons Park was the site of a Mocama Indian village of approximately 100-200 people. The inhabitants used marine resources, agriculture, square wattle and daub houses, stamped and incised Irene style ceramics, and burial mounds characteristic of this late prehistorical coastal culture. The burial mounds were in use within the chiefdom of Guadalquini from the 1450s-1600s. Artifacts found there include ceramic bowls, pipes, and a rare chevron bead. The refuse midden area revealed that the Indians consumed fish, mollusks, deer, and small animals.

In his two-volume travel chronicle, Italian painter Simone Pomardi (1760-1830) describes his journey to Greece together with British archaeologist E. Dodwell in 1805-1806. The two probably met in Rome in 1804. Dodwell engaged him as artist for his tour of Greece, and Pomardi made 600 drawings and composed the account of the journey. Dodwell often speaks of his companion’s ability as a draftsman and praises him as an observant, diligent and talented artist.
Unlike his employer, Pomardi was not an erudite scholar. Even so, he wrote a clear and concise account that focuses on the current situation of each region, touching on subjects such as the customs of the Muslims, the quality of the lodgings, and so on, while making references to history and mythology, but without citing sources. It is certain that Pomardi made many of his drawings following Dodwell’s indications. Indeed, many of their drawings look identical, even in their viewpoint. In the end, however, Pomardi’s works are distinguished by their clarity, consistency and a special painterly quality.
In his chronicle, Pomardi describes how he and Dodwell travelled from Rome to Sicily and then to Zacynthos, Missolonghi, Patras, Naupactus, Galaxidi, Amphissa, Delphi and Boeotia. He also relates their stay in Athens. Pomardi continued on to Phthiotis, Thessaly, Magnesia, Phocis, Boeotia, Euboea, the Argolid and Corinth. He was the first to draw landscapes of these regions (Pleuron, Thisbe, Lamia, etc.). At the end of his journey Pomardi fell ill and was obliged to sail to Zacynthos, eventually returning to Italy by way of Ithaca, Leucas and Corfu.

we were out bright and early (maybe not so bright) because Simon wanted to film tourists crawling around the sights. As intro he needed footage with everything empty. Here he is taking shots of an empty tennis court with his Hasselblad. Still couldnt do that myself, at the moment I just love running around and taking pics spontaneously. Soon, I'll change my setup to primes though. I like it much better when photography actually gets your mind going and this will do a good deal of that.

You know how I said that I didn't have to go out of my way to look for a cat to adopt?
Well, today I met Simon and Floydd. They were in DESPERATE need of a home. The rescue that they came from is full to capacity. The only place they could find for these two was in a small cramped cage in the back of a small pet store. Twice somebody had filled out paperwork to adopt them, but then never showed up to take them.
Larry and I had been talking about finding a companion cat for Leo, since Bella and Alex are so much older and Stella and May are not interested in being his buddy.
Of course it was only my intention to adopt one cat, but Simon and Floydd had become pretty good buddies in that small cramped cage, even though they are not litter mates. I hated to separate them.
So meet the newest members of Cat Hill Farms.
Both have been to the vets and have a clean bill of health. They have had their first round of shots and both have been neutered, so there will be no heartbreaking ending to this story.
Simon here is about 6 months old. He was just neutered yesterday and is still taking it easy. He is very shy and I think it will take some time for him to feel comfortable, Floydd is the complete opposite.....very friendly, and not afraid of anything! I'm hoping that he'll help Simon here make an easy transition.
