I include this image for documentary purposes as the signal box (circa 1905) was demolished shortly after I took the photo in 2007. This is Pencoed station and level crossing in Bridgend, South Wales.

Digital or Analog Signals
A country can be destroyed or sustained by signals. Targeted signals are aimed horizontally from the ground as well as vertically from the sky.

This is the signal conditioner board. I made this PCB by hand since it's really simple. I soldered the components as if they were surface-mount type.

This is a project similar to Botanicalls + Twitter.
Instead of sending twitter updates (the XPort shield is rather expensive) it will show the status on an LCD display and/or a computer screen running Processing.

Signal Box Ruislip Underground Station (Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines), 13 April 2024. Built in 1904 by the Harrow & Uxbridge Railway. Of course, it is not in use anymore but looked in very good condition.
This signal on 13th Street and Stange Road features a "doghouse" traffic signal which hangs from the signal arm.

Horrifying, yet interesting crayfish fact: Mothers are known to cannibalize their young!
Pregnant females carry eggs under their body until hatching. This signal crayfish, grown at Abernathy Fish Technology Center in Washington, was separated from her young once they hatched to reduce the risk of cannibalism.
Crayfish hatchlings measure just millimeters in length, not much longer than the tip of a pencil, and look just like adults.
The research center known for studying Pacific Northwest fish species also raises signal crayfish to learn about rearing techniques and about their life cycle in native habitat.

During World War II, signal lights such as this 24" example from USS New Jersey were used to quickly transmit messages between ships using flashing light signaling, a form of morse code. Searchlights are still used at sea today.
Hard to tell from the photo how windy it was, but these signals were blowing all over the place. Being from California where most (all?) signals are on a fixed mast, it's odd to see these blowing around on a string in the wind.
A selection of semaphore signal arms make a colourful sight, stored in a veteran goods van at the Mangapps Railway Museum. The museum has many superb displays of small exhibits, and the undercover storage and display space for its vintage rolling stock has been vastly increased in recent years.
