This wooden signal box, of standard Highland Railway pattern, is adjacent to the steel swing bridge built in 1909 for the Highland Railway; it crosses the east end of the Caledonian Canal at this point.

Signal boxes are a distinctive and increasingly rare building type that make a significant contribution to Scotland's diverse industrial heritage. Of more than 2000 signal boxes built across Scotland by 1948, around 150 currently survive (2013) with all pre-1948 mechanical boxes still in operation on the public network due to become obsolete by 2021. The signal box at Clachnaharry is a small and little-altered 1890 'Type 3' box by McKenzie and Holland. This important signalling manufacturer provided the signalling for much of the Highland Railway during the late 19th century. Other survivals of this once widespread type are a particularly large example at Aviemore Station and the North box at Boat of Garten Station on the preserved Strathspey Railway line.

Union Pacific's daily Ogden - Cheyenne manifest pulls its 75-car train under signal bridge 9469 between Baskin and Emory, Utah in Echo Canyon on June 27, 1992. UP's signal and cantilever bridges were removed from the Evanston Subdivision two decades ago. They were a necessity for signal aspect viewing when this left-hand running railroad operated steam locomotives with very long boilers. Not much of a problem for a crew in an SD40-2 with a low hood.

Instow railway station was a railway station in the village of Instow, North Devon, England, on the Bideford Extension of the North Devon Railway. Opened in November 1855, the station closed to passengers in 1965, but the line remained open for freight until 1982. The signal box has been preserved as a working attraction. The Atlantic Coast Express used to go through the station on its way to Torrington, but it did not call at Instow.

The former site of the railway tracks is now part of the Tarka Trail.

a man paused mid-step, caught between sand and signal. headphones wrapped him in silence, the screen offered a world quieter than the sea behind him. the promenade kept moving. he didn’t.

Visited on my return from east Texas this year.

It's a peculiar build of steel plate fastened with bolts resulting in a ribbed appearance. Fascinating. Finished in black and white to show off its corduroy appearance.

“Disenchantment, whether it is a minor disappointment or a major shock, is the signal that things are moving into transition in our lives.”

Night view of Caprotti valve gear fitted British Railways Standard Class 5MT 73129 on the approach to Swanwick Junction station, Midland Railway Centre. Those of you that know the location may notice that I've done some repairs to the signals on the left... Seen during a 30742 Charters event.

Computer issues at South Lyon after meeting counter part L303 caused over an hour delay which during this time of year really takes away a lot of photo possibilities. While clouds flare overhead, a large fragment of cap-rock rests alongside the trail and looks conspicuously out of place amongst the deeper red of the mudstones, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Colorado.

Visiting this Monument was a prime objective of our recent Thanksgiving road-trip to the Southwestern part of the State. Abandoned cliff-dwellings and watchtowers blend in remarkably well with the landscape, being built from the native materials at hand, and my wife and boys and I were thoroughly engrossed while searching for them and imagining their creators out-loud, along with the way of life that existed here. Say what you will about America these days (and whatever it is, it would probably be accurate), but the fact that public land like this exists and anyone can go explore is largely due to Teddy Roosevelt's leadership. A vision like that, gifted to future generations as it was, still makes me proud to be an American today.
