Stockport No 2 signal box, built in the 1870s, has 60 levers and is operated manually by two signallers using a system of bells and flashing lights. It too operates an Absolute Block through the station to No.1 box. Stockport No 2 signalbox is one of the oldest in the country and was due to be pensioned off when a new signalling system was installed in 2010, as part of the £85m upgrade to the West Coast Main Line. Try as I might to get a 'box and train' photo , it was an impossible task. At the other end of the station I couldn't capture No.2 box in the frame as it is a more squat structure on the platform.
