Bradkirk signal box. August 1958. Photographer unknown.
This signal box was located between Kirkham and Weeton on the Preston to Fleetwood railway line. The fast lines from Kirkham to Blkackpool South passed at the rear of the signal box. It was demolished in November 1972.

Rainford Junction signal box was built in 1874 for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company as a Saxby & Farmer type 7 design with a 46 lever Saxby & Farmer frame. A replacement 52 lever Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company Tappet frame was installed in 1894, which was later extended to 56 levers (A-D, 1-52). A replacement London Midland & Scottish Railway Company type 11c top was fitted in 1933. The lever frame was reduced to 10 levers on 22nd October 1967 when lever numbers A-D, 1-20 and 31-52 were removed with lever numbers with 21-30 being renumbered 1-10. The signal box was re-windowed in the 1990s and was refurbished with uPVC cladding and windows in early summer 2008
8 signal (Starting Down Main To Up & Down Line) is carried on a right hand bracket carried on a tubular main stem. The tubular post carrying 8 signal has a white diamond which indicates to the driver that his train is occupying a track circuit that indicates his presence to the signalman
They recently applied decals to the signals at Vine Street with the MP # on them.

These flies seem to float or dance when they move and sometimes they move diagonally in a strange pattern. Quite curious to watch and difficult to photograph because it's impossible to preempt where they will move to next.
The dangerous fog occurrences on this hazardous part of Lake Michigan required a backup fog signal building to be built in 1864. Later it became the Assistant Keepers Residence.
This was the panel that replaced the lever frame in Ballymena signal cabin. Signalling at Ballymena is now controlled from Coleraine.
