Talk about a dazzling sight this evening on winter solstice! This was the long-awaited, super rare close conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. The 2 planets would easily fit inside the face of a full moon! Anyway, hope y'all had a chance to enjoy this rare celestial display! Pic taken from around San Jose, CA. *Skywatchers were in for an end-of-year treat. What has become known popularly as the “Christmas Star” is actually a vibrant planetary conjunction that's easily visible as Jupiter & Saturn come together, culminating on the night of Dec. 21. The planets regularly appear to pass each other in the Solar System, with the positions of Jupiter & Saturn being aligned in the sky about once every 20 years. What makes this year’s spectacle so rare? It’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed this close to each other in the sky & nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn & Jupiter occurred at night, as it will for 2020, allowing nearly everyone around the world to witness this “great conjunction.” It’ll be the 1st Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since the year 2000 & the closest Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since 1623, 14 years after Galileo made his 1st telescope! The closest alignment will appear just 0.1 degree apart & last for a few days. On the 21st, they appeared so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length would cover both planets in the sky. The planets were easy to see by looking toward the southwest after sunset. From our vantage point, the huge gas giants will appear very close together, but they remain hundreds of millions of miles apart. And while the conjunction is happening on the same day as the winter solstice, the timing is merely a coincidence, based on the orbits of the planets & the tilt of the Earth!

Hidden in plain sight. This is one of my hobbies: Geocaching. You hide a container in the outdoors and provide the GPS coordinates. to geocachers on Geocaching.com. Look up code GC5VCNY. Here I show the grey-painted container with two hooks; one to hand on the tree and the other helps you snag it with a pole or stick. It's amazing how hard it is to see when hanging from a tree, even in plain sight.

Is control marker 4 somewhere around here? This team of four is taking a sighting from a bearing off their orienteering maps before searching.
I've worn glasses since I was about 8 years old, so this sight of a blurry clock in my bedroom is very familiar to me.
