Connecticut tumbled bluestone with Thyme growing in between. In the summer the Shasta daisies provide a cheerful welcome.
The never-photographed view of the side yard, taken today out of a fit of nostalgia from looking at old pictures of the yard (which we photograph not nearly often enough). We're so glad the septic people didn't take down the gum tree or the holly copse!
Prior to putting in the fence between our yard and the neighbor's, the side of our garage was just a lost space. But now that we do have a fence? It's a whole new expanse of yard for us to work with! When we put up the halloween lights on the fence a few weeks ago we got the genius idea to put some grapevines at the backyard end of the fence. And some rhododendrons next to the garage. And a mulch path down the middle of the alley. And we already have the mulch -- the giant heap of woodchips at the back of the yard that's all that's left of the black locust tree that got struck by lightning.
Hoed the bed and added compost, worm castings, and then planted. Some are still growing in paper cups...to be transplanted later.

You can see where more crushed rock is required (Still need to clean out the excess large concrete rubbish from there).
We raised the soil about 5-10cms throughout the property.
It's an overcast day today, but the gray sky seems to make the greens greener and the dogwood blossoms seem to pop. This is the view I have from the dining room table where I also sit with my laptop during the day. In fact, this is taken through the window. I noticed this morning that the large trees in the background are also starting to get their leaves. During the summer, this whole side yard looks like a jungle.
Isn't it beautiful? This fascinating San Diego outdoor living room for the whole family. Perfect to get the family bonding outdoors.
