While exploring the old Western Avenue freight leads above Sacramento, I decided it wouldn't hurt to walk up further and get a shot of Metra's real gems: F40Cs #611 and #614. An additional prize to the set is three ex-CNW StL Company gallery cars, recently returned from VRE. It's a neat taste of Metra from the late 1990s, before Metra radically changed it's roster in 2003-2005.
Sidelined Sprinter train awaiting the scrapper at CTA terminal in Amsterdam Westhaven, May 15, 2021. The red freight engine was waiting to depart, but as there were some minor problems with the load, this was taking another two hours. As I had other things to do, I decided to go home.
Here's one from the archives. Class 67 locomotives Nos. 67016 and 67017 top and tail the 19:00 Cardiff Central to Taunton service on Wednesday 24th June 2009. The train has been routed into the down loop here at Yatton to allow the late-running 13:06 Edinburgh to Plymouth service, formed of a Class 220 Voyager, to overtake.
Around this time there were two loco-hauled diagrams on the Cardiff-Taunton route and these ran for a couple of years, presumably due to a shortage of DMUs. Although these workings started out with "67s" in charge they were replaced by Class 57s for a while. However, the "Bodysnatchers" proved less reliable, and so the "Skips" came back for the remainder of these operations.

Two vehicles also ousted by the arrival of new ADL 400s were DAF 507 (T165 AUA) and Volvo 1951 (PL51 LDK) the latter being stored 'serviceable' and held in reserve. Both vehicles are currently parked at Mountjoy.
Sometimes its better to be in the sideline, instead of being in the middle and going against the flow.. pressures definitely way off.

Parked in the loco sidings at Peterborough (normally occupied by track machines nowadays), Colas Rail Freight no. 37219 "Jonty Jarvis" idles merrily away while waiting for its eventual departure as 8Z01 back to Derby RTC (led by 37521). The brake force runner immediately behind 37219 (a former Motorail van) had severe wheel flats, hence the planned run under a Class 8 headcode.
Idling with no crew aboard, a train of empties awaits a new crew. The second unit is an old SD70MAC wearing fresh paint over its former green n cream.
Belt Railway of Chicago was well-known for its roster with 6 Alco C424s they used in transfer service all around Chicagoland for decades.
In 1999 they were retired and sold off all across the nation.
The 605 was sold to the Arkansas and Missouri and parted out to help other Alcos live.
Shilbottle Colliery was connected to the ECML just south of Alnmouth. As with nearby Whittle Colliery, dieselisation came in the early 70s with some class 10s withdrawn from BR. Most of these were given an NCB livery and number as they got overhauled at Lambton Workshops, but the exception was D4056 which worked at Shilbottle from 1973 until about 1977 when it was sidelined and gradually cannibalised for spares, being cut up on site here in 1983 after the colliery closed. Thanks to my friend for sending over a shot of my goofy self on the sidelines for the Oregon State / TCU football game a few weeks ago. The black knee pads sell the outfit, right? Truth known, a four dollar purchase can make four hours of photography much more comfortable. Field turf and rubber shreds are not kind on the knees.

After the demise of steam, most Scottish steel works relied on Ruston & Hornsby 165DE class locos during the 1960s. Some, like this example, were even wired for multiple working with classmates in a cab-to-cab arrangement with additional connecting doors built into the cab ends.
One survivor RH434775 of 1960 awaits its fate at BSC Dalzell on 2nd April 1981 .
These were gradually taken out of use and replaced by Hunslet and Barclay diesel hydraulics in the 1970s.

I have kept every original-file frame that I have ever shot over the last 15-years, both bad and good. Digital storage is cheap, and I find that it is fun to go back over some of the 4.2Tb of images that I now have and re-develop some with a new eye and modern tools. I also find that I remember shooting all of them. This is an example of a recently developed image that I had originally passed over at the time I shot it.
I like football, and I watch it on TV all the time, but even before my first game-shoot ended, I was looking for a subject more interesting than just helmets and numbers. This was intended to be a sideline portrait, so that is where I put the focus, but I also wanted a play to be underway to generate engagement. To get the whole sideline in at this focal-length, I had to go to the top of the away-team bleachers on the other side of the field (there were no away-team spectators. This is a small college). As I have observed before, when the subject is engaged, the viewer becomes engaged. The majority of the development work was done in Lightroom from a SOOC-JPG original file.
