One of the many side creeks draining into the Rogue River

Side view of the Mikasa, showing the huge quantity of main and secondary guns.

It was a massive problem to control all these guns to fire against a certain target, leading to the development of the British Battleship Dreadnought with an only large main gun armament and a modern firecontrol system.

Came upon this band playing at an outdoor event I was photographing. As the event broke up and everyone departed, the band inexplicably remained to do a final set. There was just a small handful of people remaining to listen, perhaps five or six. It seemed rude to just walk away while they were still playing, and beyond that I thought this was a golden opportunity to photograph them at very close range without feeling as if I was interfering with the performance. I took a few shots with my back to the sun and they seemed like the usual boring band shots. I came around to the opposite side and started shooting into the sun. The guitarist suddenly moved, exposing the sun to the lens. I reflexively pressed the shutter and this was the resulting image. Way more dynamic this way.

American postcard by Natural Color Publishers, Miami Beach, Florida, no. NCP 3394 13269. Photo: H.W. Hannau. Caption: Sea Sprite... It's Miss Bettie Page.

American model Bettie Page (1923 -2008) gained a significant profile in the 1950s for her pin-up photos. Often referred to as the 'Queen of Pinups', her jet black hair, blue eyes, and trademark bangs have influenced artists for generations. Page was 'Miss January 1955', one of the earliest Playmates of the Month for Playboy magazine.

Amtrak's Empire Service plies the West Side Line just after sunset. The line was originally constructed for freight service by the Hudson River Railroad in 1849, and extended all the way to Chambers St. in far lower Manhattan. Shortly thereafter, the tracks were acquired by Cornelius Vanderbilt of the New York Central Railroad. The line served the industrial and dock areas of the lower west side and was the primary route for meat and produce into New York. To alleviate street level congestion, the section south from 34th St. was elevated in the 1920's. In later years, as the industries served by the freight rail diminished, the elevated section was abandoned and has since been converted into the very popular High Line Park. In the 1980s, the section of the West Side Line from 34th St. to the northern tip of Manhattan was acquired by Amtrak and converted to passenger use. With the construction of a new connection from the line to Penn Station, Amtrak was able to route trains using the Water Level Route to Penn Station (instead of Grand Central) and consolidate its Empire and NEC operations at Penn Station.

we have only been on this island for less then a year but i am grateful for the friends that we have made that are like family to us. we had a blast this weekend at the conference. it was renewing, refreshing and inspiring to see 100's and 100's of people rekindle their faith in real and tearful ways.
