GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Sexually dichromatic. The male is orange-red to magenta, one large violet square on each side of its body (thus the common name), elongate third dorsal spine. Coloration and size of “square” highly variable among individuals; female less colorful. On many individuals, the magenta square spot appears to glow like a neon light.
Length up to 20 cm (8 in)
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Indonesia to Samoa, Japan and the eastern Indian Ocean over steep, current-swept seaward dropoffs, 10–180 m (30-550 ft), but typically below 25 m (75 ft) depth.
DIET IN THE WILD: Small crustaceans and fish eggs.
REPRODUCTION: Sequential hermaphrodite: can change sex from female to male. All Squarespot Anthiasis begin life as females. All males are sexually reversed females. Sex reversal is due to environmental or social factors ensureing there will always be a male and a female to reproduce.

Order: Carcharhiniformes (Ground sharks; characterized by the presence of a nictitating membrane over the eye, two dorsal fins, an anal fin, and five gill slits.)
Family: Scyliorhinidae (Cat sharks; elongated cat-like eyes and a patterned appearance, ranging from stripes to patches to spots)

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: The body is light brown with dark saddle patches covered with black and white dots. Stout body with flat, broad head; snout short; mouth huge, proportionally larger that the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). Teeth are at front of jaws with dagger-like central point and 1-2 small points on each side; two dorsal fins: first much larger, with origin over pelvic fins, second dorsal fin considerably smaller than first, its origin over origin of anal fin. Gill slits small. Maximum length 3.2 ft.
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Central California to southern Mexico; also reported near central Chile.
Found in rocky reefs and kelp forests, from surface to 460 m (1500 ft), in temperate and subtropical waters.
DIET IN THE WILD: Nocturnal; feeds on crustaceans and fishes, often blacksmith. Lie-in-wait predator that sits on the bottom with wide-open mouth, ready to ambush unsuspecting prey. (slowly opens jaws; lies in wait for prey to swim inside).
REPRODUCTION: Oviparous; female lays amber-colored egg cases that hatch in 8–10 months. Egg case (“mermaid’s purse”) is 9 – 13 centimeters (3.5 - 5 inches) long, 3 – 6 centimeters (1 - 2.3 inches) wide. Young have enlarged toothlike denticles on the back that help them break through egg cases. Pups measure 14 – 15 centimeters at birth; immediately feed on their own
PREDATORS: If caught it is, usually it will be released because its flesh is of poor quality. Embryos may be eaten by snails that bore through egg cases. Life span: 25 or more years
CONSERVATION: IUCN Red List: least concern species
REMARKS: Harmless, sluggish, hides in caves and crevices during normal aquarium hours. the day, and so is often not to be seen during aquarium hours. Common and specific (ventriosum = “largebelly”) names come from its ability to take in water that makes it appear up to twice as large as its normal size, a difficult meal for predators to bite or to remove from a crevice. If caughtand brought to the surface, it can swell its body with air.
When caught by fishermen and brought out of water, the release of gulped water/air can cause the swell shark to “bark”.
Occurs in aggregations while resting, sometimes piled one on top of the other.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Have large square heads, comprising almost a third of the total body length with the largest and heaviest brain of any living animal. The head of a Sperm whales contains the spermaceti organ used in echo location. It is filled with a waxy liquid called spermaceti oil. Their single blowhole is located on the left of the head rather than on the top and they have a low, bushy spout, which is projected forward and slightly to the left. Their skin is wrinkled to increase surface area for heat loss, giving them a shriveled look. Color is dark brown to bluish-black and there usually is a large hump (no fin) on the back. There are 18-28 functional teeth on each side of the lower jaws, but the upper teeth are few, weak and nonfunctional. The lower teeth fit into sockets in the upper jaw. .
Male length to 17 m (60 ft) in length, making it the largest toothed whale. Weight up to 54,431 kg (60 tons).
Female length to 12 m (37 ft), Weight to 24,494 kg (27 tons).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Found in all of the oceans of the world except the high Arctic. Primarily an inhabitant of the open ocean in offshore areas, the Sperm whale may also occasionally be seen closer to land, providing that the water is deeper than 200 m (650 ft). In California, sperm whales can be seen in waters off the continental slope from November to April.
DIET: Powerful sound waves are emitted from the head which can stun and perhaps kill squid, octopuses and fish including sharks and rays. They eat about 907 kg (2,200 lbs/1 ton) per day.
Note: Surprisingly teeth aren't used mainly for eating. Male Sperm whales appear to use their teeth mostly for fighting other males. The whale sucks prey into its mouth and gullet which is large enough to swallow a man whole. Ref. Te Papa, New Zealand museum and The Encyclopedia of Life.
REPRODUCTION: Mating occurs in spring and summer.After a gestation period of about 16 months, a single calf weighing up to 500 kg (1100 lbs.) is born between July and November. The calf is suckled for up to two years.
Females protect their young by adopting a defensive ‘marguerite formation’ in which the calves are surrounded by a circle of females, facing tail outwards.
Adult males lead a solitary life except for the breeding season. Female and young male sperm whales are social and sometimes are seen in pods, or groups, of up to 50 whales.
PREDATORS: Killer whales
CONSERVATION: IUCN Red List Vulnerable VU Large-scale hunting began in 1712 in the North Atlantic, based at Nantucket in America. These whales were not widely hunted for its meat, but for ambergris and spermaceti oil. Ambergris collects around the indigestible beaks of squid in the stomach of the whale, and was highly prized for use as a fixative in the perfume industry; spermaceti was used in the production of cosmetics and candles. Recent estimates suggest a global population of 300,000 animals, down from about 1,100,000 before whaling.
Although the International Whaling Commission brought an international moratorium on whaling into force in the 1980s Japan continues to kill whales and dolphins.
Threats: Japan continues to hunt Sperm whales every year at Lamalera, Indonesia using hand harpoons. Other threats include entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with boats.
REMARKS:
P. macrocephalus dives can last two hours and can be as deep as 3000m (9800 ft) making it the deepest diving mammal.
A white Sperm whale was featured in Herman Melville’s classic novel, Moby Dick.
SPECIAL NOTE: On April 15, 2015 biologists and researchers from the Marine Mammal Center and the California Academy of Sciences performed a necropsy on a beached sperm whale found below Mori Point in Pacifica. Because of its size the mandible is now on the Academy roof buried underneath some soil, which will allow the tissue remaining on the bone to decompose Exposure to the sun after removal from the dirt will naturally whiten the specimen which will become part of the Academy's research collection.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Have large square heads, comprising almost a third of the total body length with the largest and heaviest brain of any living animal. The head of a Sperm whales contains the spermaceti organ used in echo location. It is filled with a waxy liquid called spermaceti oil. Their single blowhole is located on the left of the head rather than on the top and they have a low, bushy spout, which is projected forward and slightly to the left. Their skin is wrinkled to increase surface area for heat loss, giving them a shriveled look. Color is dark brown to bluish-black and there usually is a large hump (no fin) on the back. There are 18-28 functional teeth on each side of the lower jaws, but the upper teeth are few, weak and nonfunctional. The lower teeth fit into sockets in the upper jaw. .
Male length to 17 m (60 ft) in length, making it the largest toothed whale. Weight up to 54,431 kg (60 tons).
Female length to 12 m (37 ft), Weight to 24,494 kg (27 tons).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Found in all of the oceans of the world except the high Arctic. Primarily an inhabitant of the open ocean in offshore areas, the Sperm whale may also occasionally be seen closer to land, providing that the water is deeper than 200 m (650 ft). In California, sperm whales can be seen in waters off the continental slope from November to April.
DIET: Powerful sound waves are emitted from the head which can stun and perhaps kill squid, octopuses and fish including sharks and rays. They eat about 907 kg (2,200 lbs/1 ton) per day.
Note: Surprisingly teeth aren't used mainly for eating. Male Sperm whales appear to use their teeth mostly for fighting other males. The whale sucks prey into its mouth and gullet which is large enough to swallow a man whole. Ref. Te Papa, New Zealand museum and The Encyclopedia of Life.
REPRODUCTION: Mating occurs in spring and summer.After a gestation period of about 16 months, a single calf weighing up to 500 kg (1100 lbs.) is born between July and November. The calf is suckled for up to two years.
Females protect their young by adopting a defensive ‘marguerite formation’ in which the calves are surrounded by a circle of females, facing tail outwards.
Adult males lead a solitary life except for the breeding season. Female and young male sperm whales are social and sometimes are seen in pods, or groups, of up to 50 whales.
PREDATORS: Killer whales
CONSERVATION: IUCN Red List Vulnerable VU Large-scale hunting began in 1712 in the North Atlantic, based at Nantucket in America. These whales were not widely hunted for its meat, but for ambergris and spermaceti oil. Ambergris collects around the indigestible beaks of squid in the stomach of the whale, and was highly prized for use as a fixative in the perfume industry; spermaceti was used in the production of cosmetics and candles. Recent estimates suggest a global population of 300,000 animals, down from about 1,100,000 before whaling.
Although the International Whaling Commission brought an international moratorium on whaling into force in the 1980s Japan continues to kill whales and dolphins.
Threats: Japan continues to hunt Sperm whales every year at Lamalera, Indonesia using hand harpoons. Other threats include entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with boats.
REMARKS:
P. macrocephalus dives can last two hours and can be as deep as 3000m (9800 ft) making it the deepest diving mammal.
A white Sperm whale was featured in Herman Melville’s classic novel, Moby Dick.
SPECIAL NOTE: On April 15, 2015 biologists and researchers from the Marine Mammal Center and the California Academy of Sciences performed a necropsy on a beached sperm whale found below Mori Point in Pacifica. Because of its size the mandible is now on the Academy roof buried underneath some soil, which will allow the tissue remaining on the bone to decompose Exposure to the sun after removal from the dirt will naturally whiten the specimen which will become part of the Academy's research collection.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Have large square heads, comprising almost a third of the total body length with the largest and heaviest brain of any living animal. The head of a Sperm whales contains the spermaceti organ used in echo location. It is filled with a waxy liquid called spermaceti oil. Their single blowhole is located on the left of the head rather than on the top and they have a low, bushy spout, which is projected forward and slightly to the left. Their skin is wrinkled to increase surface area for heat loss, giving them a shriveled look. Color is dark brown to bluish-black and there usually is a large hump (no fin) on the back. There are 18-28 functional teeth on each side of the lower jaws, but the upper teeth are few, weak and nonfunctional. The lower teeth fit into sockets in the upper jaw. .
Male length to 17 m (60 ft) in length, making it the largest toothed whale. Weight up to 54,431 kg (60 tons).
Female length to 12 m (37 ft), Weight to 24,494 kg (27 tons).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Found in all of the oceans of the world except the high Arctic. Primarily an inhabitant of the open ocean in offshore areas, the Sperm whale may also occasionally be seen closer to land, providing that the water is deeper than 200 m (650 ft). In California, sperm whales can be seen in waters off the continental slope from November to April.
DIET: Powerful sound waves are emitted from the head which can stun and perhaps kill squid, octopuses and fish including sharks and rays. They eat about 907 kg (2,200 lbs/1 ton) per day.
Note: Surprisingly teeth aren't used mainly for eating. Male Sperm whales appear to use their teeth mostly for fighting other males. The whale sucks prey into its mouth and gullet which is large enough to swallow a man whole. Ref. Te Papa, New Zealand museum and The Encyclopedia of Life.
REPRODUCTION: Mating occurs in spring and summer.After a gestation period of about 16 months, a single calf weighing up to 500 kg (1100 lbs.) is born between July and November. The calf is suckled for up to two years.
Females protect their young by adopting a defensive ‘marguerite formation’ in which the calves are surrounded by a circle of females, facing tail outwards.
Adult males lead a solitary life except for the breeding season. Female and young male sperm whales are social and sometimes are seen in pods, or groups, of up to 50 whales.
PREDATORS: Killer whales
CONSERVATION: IUCN Red List Vulnerable VU Large-scale hunting began in 1712 in the North Atlantic, based at Nantucket in America. These whales were not widely hunted for its meat, but for ambergris and spermaceti oil. Ambergris collects around the indigestible beaks of squid in the stomach of the whale, and was highly prized for use as a fixative in the perfume industry; spermaceti was used in the production of cosmetics and candles. Recent estimates suggest a global population of 300,000 animals, down from about 1,100,000 before whaling.
Although the International Whaling Commission brought an international moratorium on whaling into force in the 1980s Japan continues to kill whales and dolphins.
Threats: Japan continues to hunt Sperm whales every year at Lamalera, Indonesia using hand harpoons. Other threats include entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with boats.
REMARKS:
P. macrocephalus dives can last two hours and can be as deep as 3000m (9800 ft) making it the deepest diving mammal.
A white Sperm whale was featured in Herman Melville’s classic novel, Moby Dick.
SPECIAL NOTE: On April 15, 2015 biologists and researchers from the Marine Mammal Center and the California Academy of Sciences performed a necropsy on a beached sperm whale found below Mori Point in Pacifica. Because of its size the mandible is now on the Academy roof buried underneath some soil, which will allow the tissue remaining on the bone to decompose Exposure to the sun after removal from the dirt will naturally whiten the specimen which will become part of the Academy's research collection.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Compressed and oval to oblong-shaped bodies. Orange and blue horizontal stripes on body; larger orangish bars on back. Fins tinged with orange with black blotch on continuous soft dorsal and anal fins. The caudal (tail) fin is forked.
Length up to: 30 cm (12 in)
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Cape Mendocino to northern Baja California along rocky shores, often at the edges of kelp beds; occasionally over sand but not found in the surf zone.
DIET IN THE WILD: Rainbow Surfperch feed on isopods, amphipods and other crustaceans; also snails and brittle stars.
REPRODUCTION: H. caryi males approach the female from below; both swim with vents close for 2 or 3 seconds, then separate and repeat the process. As all surfperch H. caryi fertilization is internal and are viviparous (livebearers) giving birth to as many as 22 young which are fully-formed 5 cm at birth miniature versions of the adults.
COSERVATION: IUCN: Not evaluated.
REMARKS: Divers in Monterey Bay report rainbow surfperch cleaning ocean sunfish (Mola mola).

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Central California to southern Mexico; also reported near central Chile.

Color of Life note: Pit vipers, boas and pythons have heat sensing organs which detect infrared (IR) wavelengths on their face. The snake can tell the direction from which a signal originates, depending on where the nerve signal strikes a membrane. This partnership between heat detection and visual sensory inputs allows the snake to detect its warm-blooded prey, even when it is too dark to pick out prey from the background.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: They have a large head with a light bordered dark stripe running diagonally through the eye and a large pit between the nostril and eye.. The body is bulky with a row of large dark diamonds with brown centers and cream borders down its back. The ground color of the body ranges from olive, to brown, to almost black. The tail has a well-developed rattle. Maximum length to 7 feet (average length 33 to 72 inches).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Endemic to the southeast of the United States. Found in in the coastal lowlands, barrier islands. Occasionally it may venture into salt water, swimming to the outlying Keys off the Florida coast.
DIET IN THE WILD; C. adamanteus is crepuscular and are most active in the evening or early morning. They feed primarily on small mammals, from mice to rabbits. Location of the prey is by odor, as well as by sensing the infrared waves (heat) given off by their warm-blooded prey.
REPRODUCTION: Brood size ranges from 6 to 21. The gestation period is six to seven months. Young are born live, in retreats such as gopher tortoise burrows or hollow logs and can live over 20 years.
PREDATORS: Young are taken by hogs, carnivorous mammals (the gray fox), raptors (the red-tailed hawk), and other snakes (especially king snakes). Adults have no natural predators.
CONSERVATION: Red List (LC) Least concern but the population is decreasing due to fragmentation by agriculture, forestry practices and urbanization.
REMARKS: It preys on rats, mice, rabbits, and other small mammals, many of which are pests to humans.
It can strike up to 2/3 its body length; a 6-foot specimen may strike 4 feet. It has potent venom with a mortality rate for humans is nearly 40 percent. The only acceptable treatment for venomous snakebite, involves the use of antivenom.

CENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Back blackish or dark grey, with orange spots in the shade and whitish with yellow spots (bordered with black) in the sun. Thighs, ventral surface of limbs, and hands and feet are orange. Venter is creamish. Length to 33 mm (1.3 inches).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Southeastern lowlands of Madagascar from sea level up to at least 800m (2600 feet). It is a species of open areas, including savannahs, degraded habitats, agricultural areas, grasslands, and rice fields. They inhabit riparian zones, where a body of water (mainly a pond) meets the land. Among emergent vegetation, reed frogs spend the day sleeping on the underside of leaves.
DIET IN THE WILD: Insects.
REPRODUCTION: H. alboguttatus breeds in a wide variety of temporary and permanent waterbodies, including rice fields. They are very easy to breed in captivity.
CONSERVATION: IUCN Least Concern (LC)
Has a wide distribution, tolerance of a broad range of habitats and presumed large population. Starry night reed frogs have been imported directly from Madagascar several times over the past decade. These imports are the foundation of the captive population of H. alboguttatus in the United States today.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Colored brown above, lighter below. Conical black-tipped papillae on the dorsal side provide the common name. The mouth and anus are on opposite ends of their cylindrical bodies. Tube feet aide in gathering food as well as ambulating.Length to 25 cm (10 inches).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Monterey Bay, California to Baja California. Found on sandy or muddy-sandy soft bottoms between rocks or in eelgrass beds. Sub tidal to 27 m (89 feet) in depth.
DIET: Digests organic detritus and small organisms in soft sediments.
REPRODUCTION?DEVELOPMENT: Have separate sexes (look alike), and eggs are fertilized externally. Broadcast spawning usually takes place in November, and each female can produce thousands of eggs. After fertilization, a larva is formed which metamorphoses into a Sea Cucumber after a few weeks.
MORTALITY/LONGEVITY: Eaten by sea stars including the sunflower star. Sea otters and humans are also predators. Lifespan estimated to be 5-10 years in the wild.

REMARKS: Holothuroids differ from echinoderms, because they have a water vascular system full of body fluid rather than sea water. Like other echinoderms, cucumbers have a calcareous skeleton; but in their case it is only vestigial, composed of plates and spicules of lime buried in the skin and serving merely to stiffen the body wall. Respiratory trees are the lungs of a sea cucumber. These hollow branched organs lie inside the body cavity on either side of the posterior intestine. The base of the tree connects to a muscular cavity, or cloaca. Oxygen is transferred across the thin membrane into the fluids of the body cavity. When the oxygen is depleted, the main body wall contracts to squeeze water out of the trees.
When threatened, it can expel all its internal organs through its anus (evisceration) and grow new ones in 2-4 weeks. It can also expel sticky filaments to ensnare or confuse predators. Warty sea cucumbers and their related species are sometimes called the “earthworms of the sea,” as they cultivate the seafloor in much the same manner as earthworms cultivate the soil. Oral tube feet around the mouth are covered with a sticky mucus that traps food particles from the seafloor's sediment and mud. In areas where overfishing has reduced the population of sea cucumbers, the seafloor hardens, thus destroying a habitat for other bottom-dwelling creatures. Can walk on tube feet if stressed up to one yard every 15 min..
Humans eat a variety of sea cucumber species, including Warty sea cucumbers. The demand is greatest in Asian countries, for consumption and folk medicine applications. It is considered to be widely overfished.

Respiratory trees are the lungs of a sea cucumber. These hollow branched organs lie inside the body cavity on either side of the posterior intestine. The base of the tree connects to a muscular cavity, or cloaca. Oxygen is transferred across the thin membrane into the fluids of the body cavity. When the oxygen is depleted, the main body wall contracts to squeeze water out of the trees.
When threatened, it can expel all its internal organs through its anus (evisceration) and grow new ones in 2-4 weeks. It can also expel sticky filaments to ensnare or confuse predators. Warty sea cucumbers and their related species are sometimes called the “earthworms of the sea,” as they cultivate the seafloor in much the same manner as earthworms cultivate the soil. Oral tube feet around the mouth are covered with a sticky mucus that traps food particles from the seafloor's sediment and mud. In areas where overfishing has reduced the population of sea cucumbers, the seafloor hardens, thus destroying a habitat for other bottom-dwelling creatures. Can walk on tube feet if stressed up to one yard every 15 min..
Humans eat a variety of sea cucumber species, including Warty sea cucumbers. The demand is greatest in Asian countries, for consumption and folk medicine applications. It is considered to be widely overfished.

Color of Life note: Iridescence is caused by two or more semi-transparent, inorganic and/or organic surfaces
that cause multiple light reflections. An example found in our tidepool is the Red Abalone inner shell surface which produces an impressive vibrant luster when exposed to light.
The aragonite and conchiolin secreted by the abalone in forms a crystalline structure that reflects light, causing the shell’s iridescence. The inner surface of the shell is known as mother-of-pearl, or nacre.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: The red abalone is a large limpet-like snail with a flattened and rounded shell. The shell can reach up to 30 cm (11.8 in) in length and is usually brick red and overgrown with fouling organisms. Color varies with diet and varies between aquamarine, green, or white. Water enters anteriorly through row of holes parallel to the rim of the shell and exits posteriorly carrying waste products and gametes. When in danger, the abalone clamps its shell tightly to the substrate, protecting soft parts of its body. The shell’s color is influenced by the animal’s diet. The red color is from the pigment phycoerythrin consumed in its red alga diet. Color varies with a diet of brown algae (varies between aquamarine, green, or white).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Red abalone are found from Oregon to Baja California. They are uncommon in the lower intertidal zone in rocky areas with heavy surf. Most are now found at 6 to 17 m (20 to 56 ft) depth in central California.
DIET IN THE WILD: Small abalones feed on diatoms and algae; larger animals browse the seaweeds. Red abalone eat algae, especially red and brown species. Usually foraging at night, they trap drifting pieces of algae (kelp) with the tentacles that extend from the foot. The algae is then carried by the foot to the mouth, and is torn and consumed with by the radula.
PREDATORS: Sea stars, crabs, octopuses, sea otters and human divers are among the abalone's primary predators.
REPRODUCTION and DEVELOPMENT: After spawning takes place, fertilized eggs sink. Larvae develop in the plankton until they settle to the bottom, metamorphose, and begin to graze. Growth slows with increasing size and age. Mortality is very high in the planktonic stages. Mature individuals can live more than 20 years.
REMARKS: Red abalone are highly endangered due to overexploitation by the abalone fishery. The population plummeted in the late twentieth century, but poaching continues to be a problem. California passed many strict regulations to protect the red abalone: abalone smaller than 20 cm (8 in) in diameter are protected, the canning of abalone is prohibited, and the shipment of fresh or frozen meat out of California is prohibited. Red abalone is the only species that can still be fished. Aquacultured abalone is now increasingly available.
Abalone blood is blue green and cannot clot making injury possibly fatal.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTIC: Round body with radially symmetrical test, (shell), covered with large spines 0.5 cm (2 in) in diameter, rarely to 10 cm (4in). Test and spines are pale green (young) to purple (adults). Also covering the test or shell, are tube feet and pedicellariae (pincers). The long suckered tube feet visible above the spines are used for locomotion and capture of food, which is then passed along to the mouth. The oral side of the urchin, on which the mouth is located, is usually the side facing the substrate (down). Sexes are not physically distinguishable from one another (monomorphic).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: British Columbia to Baja California in the lower intertidal to 160 m (525 ft) depth. Rounded burrows in rock that have been scoured out by the present or previous urchin using its teeth (Aristotle’s lantern) and spines, a strategy that protects from predators and surge. Subtidal purple urchins live, often in large numbers, on the substrate among kelp holdfasts.
DIET IN THE WILD: Herbivore/Detritivore. Kelp, other algae, diatoms and scavenge on dead animals. These urchins prefer the giant brown kelp Macrocystis and can destroy entire forests of kelp which are commercially important for fisheries. Algin a product from kelp is also used in the manufacturing of plastics, paints and as a thickening agent in foods such as gravy and pudding.
PREDATORS: Preyed upon by seastars such as the sunflower star and cancer crab species as well as fish such as the California sheepshead, shorebirds and sea otters. Sheephead blow over sea urchins and nibble at the oral side where the spines are shortest. When approached by most sea stars, the urchin allows the potential predator to get close, then uses its pincers to attack the sea star’s tube feet. Most sea star species will beat a hasty retreat; however, the sunflower star is too big and fast; the urchin cannot escape and is swallowed whole! Can live to more than 30 years.
REPRODUCTION: Sexually mature during their second year. Sexes are separate, although hermaphrodites occur. Broadcast spawning deposits sperm or eggs into the sea where random fertilization occurs. Pluteus larvae hatch, drift and settle. Growth after metamorphosis is slow.
CONSERVATION: CITES; no special status
REMARKS: Purple pigments from this urchin lodge in the bones and teeth of sea otters, turning the otter’s skeleton and teeth purple.
In the wild, they protect themselves from predation, drying out, and damage from the sun’s UV light by covering themselves with seaweed or shells.
Sea urchin is commonly used in sushi and is considered a delicacy Japan. The primary urchin harvesting company in California sends 75% of the harvest to Japan.

Erected by his sister and brothr who love and mourn him, this tribute to the memory of one who remained Christ's faithful soldier and servant until his life/s end
27 April 1935, Governor-General’s son Lord Hyde accidentally shot dead at Rooipoort. Lord Hyde, while shooting on the De Beers Estate near Kimberley, yesterday, tripped over his rifle which was accidentally discharged and inflicted a fatal wound.
So read the terse communique issued from Government House on 28 April 1935 concerning the tragedy on Rooipoort on Saturday 27 April 1935.
George Herbert Arthur Edward Hyde Villiers, (Lord Hyde) was the elder son and heir of the 6th Earl of Clarendon who was Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1931 to 1937. He was born on May the 6th 1906 and educated at Eton and Trinity College, Oxford. Lord Hyde served with the Royal Horse Guards (the Blues). He was a keen cricketer and had an enthusiasm for the outdoors. While in South Africa he was a member of the Western Province Wednesday XI.
In April 1932 he married the Hon. Marion Glyn elder daughter of Lord and Lady Wolverton. The wedding, which took place in Westminster Abbey on 19 April 1932, was one of the grandest social events of the year. It was graced by the presence of King George V and Queen Mary. Lord Hyde was the King’s godson and His Majesty gave him and his bride handsome wedding gifts.
In 1933 he was appointed Comptroller of the Royal Household and was a personal friend of the King.
On 2 February the same year his son and heir, George Frederick Laurence Hyde Villiers, was born.
In April 1935 the Earl and Countess of Clarendon with Lord Hyde and their younger son the Hon. Nicholas Villiers were making their second official visit to Kimberley. The Governor–General opened the Kimberley and Northern Districts Agricultural Society’s Show. On the Saturday following this, 27 April, the Earl of Clarendon and his sons went hunting at De Beers shooting box Rooipoort some 36 miles (57,6 km) out of Kimberley.
The hunting party consisted of the Earl of Clarendon, Lord Hyde, the Honourable Nicolas Villiers, Sir John Carew-Pole, Captain Schreiber, Mr Julian Martin Smith, Lt-Colonel T Ormiston, and Dr AGW Compton.
Lord Hyde was paired with Dr AGW Compton (a director of De Beers). The party sighted a springbok and Lord Hyde went off in pursuit. Shortly after this Dr Compton and Koos Mathee, the driver of the buckboard vehicle, heard a shot. When they came upon Lord Hyde, expecting to find he had brought down an animal, they were instead horrified to see him lying prostrate and bleeding.
The accident happened about 6 miles (9,6 km) from the box itself and it was immediately apparent that Lord Hyde was critically injured. The time was about 10 am. A doctor and ambulance from Kimberley were summoned. Doctors Compton and J.O.B. Hodnett decided that Lord Hyde should be moved to the box and from there taken to Kimberley Hospital. Shortly after mid-day he was taken to the box but by then Lord Hyde’s condition had deteriorated to such an extent that it was felt he should not be moved. He died at about 4.30 pm. The coffin draped with the Union Jack was taken to Kimberley Station at 9.20 pm where it was placed in a special van adjoining the White Train. A short service was conducted by the Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman before the train began its journey to Cape Town.
The verdict of the inquest was given by the Chief Magistrate of Kimberley Mr F.C.W. Coller. ‘Death due to haemorrage and shock the result of gunshot wounds accidentally sustained’. It appears that the accident happened when Lord Hyde placed the butt of his rifle on the ground to enable him to use his field glasses. The shock of the contact with the ground must have caused the gun to go off. This explanation is supported by what Lord Hyde muttered before losing consciousness and by the testimony of those present at the scene of the accident.
Telegrams of sympathy were received from the King and Queen, the South African Prime Minister General Hertzog, the British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, the Viceroy of India and many others. It is difficult nowadays to recreate in one’s mind the position which the Governor–General held in the Union of South Africa. He was the monarch’s representative and as such his position was, though largely ceremonial, above that of the Prime Minister. Thus the death of his eldest son was an event of national importance. This was reflected by the fact that a joint address of condolence was presented to the Earl and Countess of Clarendon by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the Assembly. The Dean of Johannesburg made a broadcast on the wireless on April 29th in which he said ‘Lord Hyde brought to South Africa the double contribution of capacity for friendship and a fine conception of duty for the enrichment of the common wealth)’.
On the first of May Memorial Services were held in St Cyprian’s Cathedral in Kimberley and at Sydney–on-Vaal. The former was attended by the acting Mayor Councillor J.C. Varrie, Mr H.P. Rudd, Reverend W. Pescod and Councillor J.W. Orr among others. The sermon was given by Reverend H.C. Hobson who said of Lord Hyde that ‘the great mark of his life was his religion and his sincerity. He was a good young man’. On the same day the funeral service was held in St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town and the Mayor of Kimberley W.H. Gasson represented the City at this event. A Memorial Service was held in London at the Chapel Royal, St. James Palace on the 3rd of May.
It was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The death of Lord Hyde at such a young age was tragic and the manner of it even more so. His wife Lady Hyde was of course devastated and her two-year-old son left without a father.
Somewhat of a damper was cast over South Africa’s preparations for the Silver Jubilee celebrations of King George V although the Governor-General insisted that most of them not be cancelled. It is sad to think that, on the 6th of May 1935 when the splendid functions took place in England and throughout the Empire, a young man filled with so much bright promise would not be among those taking part. And that on the very same day Lord Hyde should have been celebrating his 29th birthday.

You'll finde many copies of "Carpenter's Shop" in the internet. Usually Charles Dickens comments on that painting are quoted. But people don't get it yet. They only perceive what the crowd perceives. Tate doesn't get it either. In 1921 the British saved the "Carpenter's Shop" from being displayed upside down, yet, since more than 150 years they don't look at it carefully enough ;-)
I came up with this comparison in 2010 as a kind of "collateral finding" during my Snark hunt. The comparison is meant to be a contribution to the understanding of the making of a controversial painting (1850) by John Everett Millais which made the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood known to the Victorian public.
"We have neglected the gift of comprehending things through our senses. Concept is divorced from percept, and thought moves among abstractions. Our eyes have been reduced to instruments with which to identify and to measure; hence we suffer a paucity of ideas that can be expressed in images and in an incapacity to discover meaning in what we see. Naturally we feel lost in the presence of objects that make sense only to undeluted vision, and we seek refuge in the more familiar medium of words. ... The inborn capacity to understand through the eyes has been put to sleep and must be reawakened."

Color of Life Note: The dark brownish-green Anaconda demonstrates concealment by laying hidden in the murky waters of the Amazon. It is is more visible at the California Academy of Sciences exhibit where the water is much more transparent.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS Can grow to more than 29 feet (8.8 meters), weigh more than 227 kilograms (550 pounds) and measure more than 30 cm (12 in) (30 centimeters) in diameter. Gigantic, heavy-bodied, dark green boa with dark spots. A distinctive stripe runs from the rear edge of the eye, diagonally downwards to the back of the head. The stripe is edged with black and varies in colouration, from greenish to orange. Eyes and nasal openings are on top of their heads, allowing them to lay in wait for prey while remaining nearly completely submerged. The female dwarfs the male and is almost five times heavier.
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT South America: Amazon and Orinoco drainages from Colombia and Venezuela to East Bolivia and Central Brazil. Associated strongly with watercourses, swamps and other freshwater locations.
DIET IN THE WILD Monkeys, deer, peccaries, pacas, agoutis, birds, fish, caiman and turtles. Prey usually killed by constriction; prey suffocates but is not crushed. Usually feed in water. Jaws attached by stretchy ligaments allow them to swallow their prey whole, no matter the size, and they can go weeks or months without food after a big meal. Primarily a lie-in-wait predator.
Academy Diet: Frozen/thawed rabbits (P. Dwight Biologist).
REPRODUCTION Female anacondas retain their eggs and give birth to two to three dozen live young. Baby snakes are about 0.6 meters (2 ft). After mating, the female may eat one or more of her mating partners, as she does not take in food for up to seven months.
MORTALITY/LONGEVITY: Lives to over 29 years.
CONSERVATION: Not threatened.
REMARKS: The anaconda is, pound for pound, the largest snake in the world. The reticulated python, can reach slightly greater lengths, but the enormous girth of the anaconda makes it almost twice as heavy. Can remained submerged for a very long time lying in wait for its next meal.
The California Academy of Sciences specimen is a female. Length/wt 2013: 13 ft 11 inches long and weight 92 lbs.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTIC: Round body with radially symmetrical test, (shell), covered with large spines 0.5 cm (2 in) in diameter, rarely to 10 cm (4in). Test and spines are pale green (young) to purple (adults). Also covering the test or shell, are tube feet and pedicellariae (pincers). The long suckered tube feet visible above the spines are used for locomotion and capture of food, which is then passed along to the mouth. The oral side of the urchin, on which the mouth is located, faces the substrate (down). Sexes are not physically distinguishable from one another (monomorphic).
DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: British Columbia to Baja California in the lower intertidal to 160 m (525 ft) depth. Rounded burrows in rock that have been scoured out by the present or previous urchin using its teeth (Aristotle’s lantern) and spines, a strategy that protects from predators and surge. Subtidal purple urchins live, often in large numbers, on the substrate among kelp holdfasts.
DIET IN THE WILD: Herbivore/Detritivore. Kelp, other algae, diatoms and scavenge on dead animals. These urchins prefer the giant brown kelp Macrocystis and can destroy entire forests of kelp which are commercially important for fisheries. Algin a product from kelp is also used in the manufacturing of plastics, paints and as a thickening agent in foods such as gravy and pudding.
PREDATORS: Preyed upon by seastars such as the sunflower star and cancer crab species as well as fish such as the California sheepshead, shorebirds and sea otters. Sheephead blow over sea urchins and nibble at the oral side where the spines are shortest. When approached by most sea stars, the urchin allows the potential predator to get close, then uses its pincers to attack the sea star’s tube feet. Most sea star species will beat a hasty retreat; however, the sunflower star is too big and fast; the urchin cannot escape and is swallowed whole! Can live to more than 30 years.
REPRODUCTION: Sexually mature during their second year. Sexes are separate, although hermaphrodites occur. Broadcast spawning deposits sperm or eggs into the sea where random fertilization occurs. Pluteus larvae hatch, drift and settle. Growth after metamorphosis is slow.
CONSERVATION: CITES; no special status
REMARKS: Purple pigments from this urchin lodge in the bones and teeth of sea otters, turning the otter’s skeleton and teeth purple.
In the wild, they protect themselves from predation, drying out, and damage from the sun’s UV light by covering themselves with seaweed or shells.
Sea urchin is commonly used in sushi and is considered a delicacy Japan. The primary urchin harvesting company in California sends 75% of the harvest to Japan.
