RET 385 rijdt onder het toenmalig gebruikte lijnnummer 5 over het verbindingsspoor tussen de Wilgenplaslaan en de Meidoornsingel voor een nieuw rondje door de wijk.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Discoid body, tubular snout, dorsal spines elongated into a very long white whip-like filament. Broad vertical white, black, white-yellow black, yellow banding. Tail black with white margin Black stripes break up the body outline and hide the eye from predators.

Length to 23 cm (9 inches)

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Indo-pan-Pacific. Southern Gulf of California.

Found on hard substrates from turbid inner harbors and reef flats to clear seaward reefs as deep as 182 m (600 ft). Usually in small groups of conspecifics, occasionally in schools of more than 100.

DIET IN THE WILD: Primarily sponges. Also consumes tunicates and algae.

REPRODUCTION: It has a long larval phase and settles at a large size (6 cm or 2.4 inches) , resulting in its very wide geographic distribution.

CONSERVATION: Not evaluated

REMARKS: The moorish idol was the icon of the Golden Gate Park Steinhart Aquarium. Gill, the leader of the tank fish in Finding Nemo, with the voice of Willem Dafoe, is a Moorish idol.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: This octocoral (soft coral) is the largest species in the genus reaching a height of 1 m (3 ft). It is the largest species in the family Alcyoniidae. Colors vary among species: white, grey, yellowish-green, green. Colonies mushroom, funnel, or cup shaped, often with a folded margin. Typically have a thick, rubbery appearance with tentacles that extend from the large, often convoluted upper surface. Main stalk, often visible, bears no polyps.

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Leather Coral is found in the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea in tropical coral reefs in shallow water reef flats.

DIET IN THE WILD: Microcarnivore of plankton and nutrition from algal photosynthesis.

REPRODUCTION: Typically reproduces asexually by budding or fragmentation.

Genus: Capnella sp. (Tree-like soft coral)

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: It has a stalk that is usually cream to brown, with some having a tint of green. Their color is usually cream to brown. The Capnella genus has an erect tree-like structure with lateral branches that are heavily forked. On the top of the branches there are clusters of non-retractable polyps. The base or stalk is without polyps and appears smooth.

(Sinularia spp polyps can retract fully)

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Tropical Indo West Pacific and Red Sea.

Tend to grow in clear water with stronger currents on deeper reef slopes.

DIET IN THE WILD: They capture microscopic food particles from the water column, can absorb dissolved organic matter, and have a symbiotic relationship with a marine algae known as zooxanthellae, where they also receive some of their nutrients.

REPRODUCTION: by budding, fission, and dropping little branches

CONSERVATION: Not on IUCN Red List

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Like their close relatives the butterflyfishes, they have a deep, laterally compressed body, a single, unnotched dorsal fin, and a small mouth with brushlike teeth. The most observable difference between butterfly fishes is the long spine at the corner of the preopercle common to angelfishes.

H. ciliaris is deep-bodied and strongly laterally compressed. Dorsal and anal fins trail. The color of large adults is purplish blue with yellow-orange rims to the scales; head above eye dark blue. They have a distinctive "crown" is speckled dark blue and surrounded by a ring of bright blue.

Juveniles have vertical blue bands on an orange-red body. As the fish grows, the bars increase in number before gradually disappearing.

Length up to 45 cm (18 in), weight up to 1.6 kg (3.5lbs).

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Found in Bermuda, Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico to Brazil on offshore reefs, 2 –70+ m (6-200+ ft). Travel solitary or in pairs among sea fans, sea whips and corals.

DIET IN THE WILD: Queen angelfish primarily feed on sponges and corals.; also algae, tunicates, hydroids and bryozoans. Juveniles glean ectoparasites from other fish.

REPRODUCTION: Pairs reproduce bringing their bellies close together, and release sperm and 25 to 75 thousand eggs (10 million per spawning cycle). The eggs are transparent, buoyant, and pelagic hatching after 15 to 20 hours into larvae with the yolk sac being absorbed after 48 hours. The larvae then develop normal characteristics of free swimming fish feeding on plankton and about 3–4 weeks after hatching the 15–20 mm (0.6–0.8 in) long juvenile settles on the bottom. Juveniles are found among colonies of finger sponges and corals at the bottom of reefs for protection.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Typically bright orange-red color; black blotch near the head and 4–5 black bars across the body; flaring caudal fin about half the body height. Orange-red dorsal and anal fins tipped in alternating purple-blue and black bands. Males are brighter and larger than females.

Max. length: 15 cm (6 in).

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Found among tropical lagoons and coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Ocean. Depth from 15–60 m (45-180 ft).

DIET IN THE WILD: The Flame Angelfish feeds on algae and marine invertebrates associated with coral reefs.

REPRODUCTION: Like angelfish in general, this species begins life undifferentiated sexually, changing into females, and may develop into males with one or more females in a territorial harem. After a short mating ritual, male and female(s) rise in the water column to shed and fertilize gametes that develop within the plankton.

PREDATORS: C. loricula is preyed upon by many reef fishes.

CONSERVATION: IUCN Least Concern (LC)

REMARKS: Members of the genus Centropyge are the dwarf or pygmy angelfishes. Territorial males may determine dominance by grappling with interlocked jaws, a behavior

humans sometimes mistake for a fishy kiss.

GENERAL CHARACTERTICS: Large dark spot is located under the dorsal fin and can also have black spots on the body and fins. Their thick skin is covered by dermal spicules which are spiky and look like warts. The frogfish has small, laterally-directed eyes but a large mouth. The mouth is upturned and can expand to the width of the body to swallow prey. It has small gill openings which are situated behind the pectoral fins. The pectoral fins are modified and look like feet, including small toes. They are able to use the leg-like fins to walk across the bottom of the ocean floor.

Length up to 15 cm (6 inches), round and are often described as globular.

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Native to the western part of the Atlantic Ocean from Bermuda and the Bahamas, south along the coasts of Central and South America, including Belize. It is a bottom dweller and prefers warm water and shallow reefs.

DIET: Carnivore. Each frogfish species moves the rod (illicium) with its lure (esca) in a special pattern to attract the attention of potential prey. The frogfish can swallow fish, its main diet, that are larger in size than itself. It lowers it lower jaw and expands its upper jaw to expand the mouth, then it sucks the prey in by creating suction in the mouth, a maneuver called gape and suck reported to take only 1/6th of a second.

REPRODUCTION: Frogfish are oviparous; their eggs develop and hatch outside the mother’s body. One of the unique features of the frogfish family is the use of the “egg raft” to transport eggs.

LIFESPAN: 3-5 years.

CONSERVATION: IUCN Red List Not Evaluated

REMARKS: The longlure frogfish does not have a swim bladder, so it does not swim very often. It moves by sucking water in its mouth and expelling it through its gills.

Longlure frogfishes are able to change colors (from yellow to red or green to brown) to match nearby sponges or corals and their black spots mimic openings (ostia) of sponges.

The warty frogfish exhibits biofluorescence, that is, when illuminated by blue or ultraviolet light, it re-emits it as red, which may assist intraspecific communication and camouflage.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Compressed and oval to oblong-shaped body. Base coloration is usually silver, and some species have stripes or bars, which may be dependent on the time of year (breeding vs. non-breeding coloration) and whether the fish is a juvenile or adult. Fins tinged with orange with black blotch on continuous soft dorsal and anal fins. The caudal (tail) fin is forked.

Maximum fish length per species ranges from 4 to 18 inches.

DISTRIBUTION/HABITAT: Cape Mendocino to northern Baja California along rocky shores, often at the edges of kelp beds; occasionally over sand but not found in the surf zone.

DIET IN THE WILD: Rainbow Surfperch feed on isopods, amphipods and other crustaceans; also snails and brittle stars.

REPRODUCTION: H. caryi males approach the female from below; both swim with vents close for 2 or 3 seconds, then separate and repeat the process. As all surfperch H. caryi fertilization is internal and are viviparous (livebearers) giving birth to as many as 22 young which are fully-formed 5 cm (2 in) at birth miniature versions of the adults.

REMARKS: Divers in Monterey Bay report rainbow surfperch cleaning ocean sunfish (Mola mola).
