The ship used to be home to a bunch of gulls but the cormorants have taken over. The larger birds seem to be making their mark as the masts have taken on a decidedly different coloration

NOAA Ship Fairweather in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. The Fairweather is designed and outfitted primarily for conducting hydrographic surveys in support of nautical charting, but the ship is capable of many other missions in support of NOAA programs. The Fairweather is equipped with the latest in hydrographic survey technology –- multi-beam survey systems; high-speed, high-resolution side-scan sonar; position and orientation systems; hydrographic survey launches; and an on-board data-processing server. The Fairweather is named for Mt. Fairweather in southeast Alaska, which is the highest peak in the Fairweather Range -- the tallest coastal range on Earth.

Steam Ship Rotterdam. The fifth SS Rotterdam, also known as "The Grande Dame", is a former ocean liner and cruise ship, and has been a hotel ship in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, since 2010. She was launched by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in a gala ceremony on 13 September 1958, and was completed the following summer. The Rotterdam was the last great Dutch "ship of state", employing the finest artisans from the Netherlands in her construction and fitting out process.[2] Her career spanned forty-one years. She sailed from 1959 until her final retirement in September 2000.

It's that time of year to try building a SHIP again! I've pretty much got the technic frame and plate hull roughed out, but I think I want to widen the rear section by 4-6 studs to make room for the engines. This will be a remake of a classic SHIP by another builder, so hopefully I can do it justice! So far, it's 153 studs, but will end up around 165.

Eastern Yacht Club Commodore William F. Weld´s schooner Gitana - one of the fastest of her time - photographed (prob.) in 1892. My colorization of an image in the Library of Congress archive (Detroit Publishing Co. collection).

Gitana was a keel schooner designed and built by D. J. Lawlor of Boston for William F. Weld II in 1882. LOA 114-6ft. LWL 97-4ft. (Lengthened forward and alterations made to her spars by W. B. Smith of Boston in 1886.)

Weld, the grandson of the famous Massachusetts shipowner and industrialist William F. Weld I, was not allowed to use his beautiful yacht for very long after this photograph was taken. Already on January 11, 1893 the Harvard Crimson wrote in its obituary:

"Commodore William F. Weld, '76 died, at his home in Brookline on Sunday evening at 8 o'clock. Mr. Weld died of heart failure, the direct result of a severe attack of diphtheria. He contracted a severe cold while skating, and it developed into diphtheria. It was confidently expected that he would recover but Sunday night he had a relapse from which he was unable to rally.

Mr. Weld received the title of Commodore from the Eastern Yacht Club. He was intensely interested in yachting owning the famous schooner yacht Gitana.Mr. Weld was a member of the Country Club, and also a member of leading social clubs in Boston, including the Algonquin, Union, Somerset, St. Botolph and Tavern clubs. He was also a member of prominent clubs in New York and Philadelphia.Mr.

Weld was 37 years old. He was born in Boston in 1856, and graduated from Harvard in 1876."

The summer season is in full swing for large Cruise Ships coming into the Port of Vancouver and going up to Alaska and other areas. The small red life raft in this shot is really dwarfed by this huge ship as it passes under the Lions Gate Bridge,

The bridge links the City of Vancouver through Stanley Park with the twin cities of West and North Vancouver. The red cranes in the background are in North Vancouver and as the ships head up to Alaska they are going through what is called the Burrard Inlet before they head out to the open seas of the Pacific Ocean waters.
