Pirate Ship - An outcrop of Tufa affectionately names the Pirate Ship by the locals - Copyright 2015 Martyn Phillips, M4Photo.

Three visits to Mono Lake resulted in three very different images. The colours around the lake change all the time and I’d previously had a more purple looking image, a gorgeous blue image and today the light went a little flat with a patchy cloudy sky obscuring the sunshine.

I therefore opted to go for a longer exposure and to concentrate on one of the tufa rock formations out in the bay. Looking like a submarine, I loved the shapes in the outcrop of rock and the darkening clouds forming overhead.

It was interesting that, although I’d referred to the outcrop of rock as a submarine, right at the end of the shoot a local gentleman came up to me and referred to the rock as the Pirate Ship. After further discussion, it would seem that I was completely wrong and the outcrop has an official name and I therefore guess that I ought to name this image thus.

With the rain about to fall, this was one of the last images that I would capture at this truly amazing lake.

The Picton Castle is a barque operating out of Nova Scotia. She is flagged in the Cook Islands. She was the first of the ships to get everything set. Way in the background you can see the Elissa.

I know this is not the best Aurora image I've taken, but considering it was taken as we sailed South from Alta, it is amazing it is still useable.

High up in the Arctic Circle we were treated to almost 2 hours of magical Northern Lights as we sailed South towards Tromso. I took hundreds of shots whilst sailing and they all looked pretty fantastic on the back of the camera. On getting home and looking at them close up, you can see the slight motion blur as they were high ISO, long exposure shots whilst on deck of a moving ship, But I've kept most of them as they look great as a reminder of that mystical evening sailing down the Norwegian coastline.

This ship is the 'Kalmar Nyckel' a replica of the original, built in 1997.

The original was a Swedish ship, built by the Dutch in the early 1600s. It brought Swedish settlers to America in 1638.

The name means 'Key of Kalmar'.

I've posted a day shot of this ship but I feel like the night shot looks interesting. I just found out Galveston is offering day sails to tourist. Checked it out on line and it's $300 dollars a person. So, looks like I won't be going out for a day sail anytime soon.

A survey ship in a slightly foggy St Katherine docks, which is usually filled with luxury yachts, so this boat looked out of place. Or maybe it was never really there??
