Locals collect various shellfish and snails on the mudflats. Sometimes they cause a little disturbance to the shorebirds but this is preferable to the area being reclaimed and developed.

The weighted line is placed on all edges of the net. This helps old the net down over the clams when they are placed in lanes. the net protects them from birds and crabs. The clams stay in the lanes about 2-3 years till they are large enough to eat.

New Zealand Mussels in a Thai Curry Sauce....such a good appetizer to start off happy hour with and they don't skimp you on the amount.

i went through each mussel and cleaned them with a small brush under cold running water. some still had the beard attached, you need to remove them. if the shell is open give it a few taps with the back of a knife, if it shuts, it's good. if it doesn't shut, it's in mussel heaven, throw it out.
