There is a large shell ring of Indian origin to be found on the western side of the island between the more modern ruins at Chocolate and those at High Point . This ring is deceptive for the casual observer because its current composition implies a diet largely comprising oysters, with some clams and whelks. In fact, mammals such as deer, raccoon, dog and opossum, together with fish, are now known to have been the major components of the Indian diet.

I couldn't resist playing with some more of the shell photos I took over the weekend.
Today we have freezing rain warning. Cancel the school buses sort of ice pellet warnings. There will probably be more of it tomorrow too.
So like I said - I couldn't resist playing with some of the shell photos I took over the weekend.
Hope you're finding some warm escapism to go with your Thursday.
(8 more days until I hop on a plane and go find some real warmth...skip, jump, twirl)

Mijn oude serie boekjes "Shell helpt" weer teruggevonden. Die verzamelde ik als klein jochie bij de plaatselijke benzinepomp.
Shell after locust has left. This is the first one I've seen in years. When we were kids it was so much fun finding them.

We have been collecting these for years with the help of MimiCapeCod. The shells are from all over - Cape Cod to Florida, the Caymans & Mexico to Bermuda.
While looking for something else I came across some thirty year old negatives I had forgotten about. These were taken with my Pentax K1000, my first SLR and my high school graduation gift from my mom.
We drove down from San Diego for a cheap beer and lobster dinner. It's only thirty miles and you didn't need a passport then. Seriously, lobsters were a dollar each, the beer was half that. It was worth the drive.
There are some big hotels and condos on the beach these days and from what I hear it can be a pretty dangerous place.
Originally constructed in the late 1930’s, this shell-shaped service station serviced gas guzzlers for decades. The building fell into disrepair towards the end of the 20th century, but was then restored by state historic society, Preservation North Carolina. Today, this clamshell serves as a regional office and info center about the station and other preservation projects. Don’t miss this photo-worthy detour located off East Sprague Street.
