Sharp things in the desert - ripping beak, talons, ocotillo spines. A good day for us to be up near the top of the food chain, I'd not want to be whatever it's eyeing.

Six Days Seven Nights, New Beetle - Day 4: Saguaro National Park West, Tucson Mountain District
We made a nice loop hike up the Hugh Norris trail, down the Esperanza Trail,and back around via Dobe Wash and Bajada Wash.
That arctic weather that's covering the eastern and central US now? It was chilling New Mexico while we were in Arizona. We were glad to be there!

I experimented with different post-processing
We had this visitor to our garden today. He was happily munching (ah, shredding) something gray and gutty, just below our window, enthralling the cats. He stayed for a long time, until I frightened him, taking this photo. Thing is, he's not in my bird book. Any help from my flickr friends would be most appreciated. He was just a bit bigger than your largest mourning dove. We get marsh hawks, turkeys, crows and ravens and other bird feeder birds, but I've not seen one like this yet. Ideas? Many thanks!
Watching over the feeders at the Minnesota River Valley NWR Headquarters (about 1 mile east of the Mall of America).
Generally every winter I get a Coopers Hawk patrolling the yard. This winter it appears it is a Sharp-shinned hawk's territory.
Someone has to keep an eye on the perimeter, the woods are filled with bears, coyotes and worst of all - photographers.
