Sharp-shinned hawks, members of the Accipiter family, are skilled hunters known for capturing songbirds, small mammals, and larger insects. These hawks prefer nesting in old spruce trees and thrive in wooded habitats. With 21 to 25-inch wingspans and weights of 3.5 to 6 ounces, they are crucial in maintaining ecological balance, making them invaluable to our ecosystem.

Thirty-two deployed Soldiers assigned to various units graduate from the Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Ambassador course at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, March 22, 2023.

Soldiers attended the two-day training session hosted by the 1st Theater Sustainment Command Operational Command Post SHARP office. The voluntary training is designed to provide junior Soldiers with the education and skills necessary to promote culture change within their formations.

Brig. Gen. Maria Juarez, deputy commanding general of the 1st TSC-OCP, emphasized during her speech that the role of a SHARP Ambassador is important because the graduating Soldiers now have the responsibility to be the eyes and ears for the command team.

“Shadow the silence. Stop the violence,” Juarez announced as the new motto for the SHARP ambassador course, voted by the graduating class and attendees.

Since 1940, when Waitstill and Martha Sharp began rescuing refugees fleeing the Nazis in Europe, UUSC has been working on behalf of people whose rights are most at risk. To celebrate 75 years of advancing human rights through grassroots collaboration, UUSC hosted a special evening celebration at the Westin Waltham-Boston on April 30, 2015, featuring a keynote presentation by the award-winning New York Times columnist and author Nicholas Kristof. Special guests included several people rescued by the Sharps as well as video greeting from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). The event also featured the premiere of a specially commissioned choral piece by the renowned UU composer T.J. Anderson, with lyrics written by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, performed by the choir from First Parish in Concord, Mass.

The Sharps Island Lighthouse is one of several historic lights in the Chesapeake Bay. The permanent tilt of this light occurred in the winter of 1976-7 due to ice buildup on the light to a height of almost 40 feet. More information about this light can be found at www.cheslights.org/heritage/sharps.htm.
