a fun sharpie design

This is the Sharpie Mustache, a cocktail invented by Chris Elford sometime in 2011 or 2012 for Amor y Amargo in New York City. This is one of my all-time favorite drinks, often coming to mind when I just can't choose what to make. The story goes that Elford was a Meletti kick and an old woman came in asking for "whatever you like to make". Elford employed a split base of gin and rye whiskey, an uncommon duo. Sother Teague, the beverage director for Amor y Amargo says, "Gin is inherently herbal, while rye whiskey has distinct spiciness. No one questions it when a chef mixes herbs and spices—why act confused when your bartender does the same?" The drink is rounded out with Amaro Meletti and Bonal Gentiane Quina, the latter being a unique stand-in for vermouth. But the secret to this drink is Bittermens 'Elemakule Tiki Bitters. Without this, the drink is flat and disjointed, like an awkward party where no knows each other and no talks. But this bitters bring the other ingredients together and gives the drink a distinct "pop" in flavor.

0.75 oz London Dry gin

0.75 oz rye whiskey (preferably Rittenhouse)

0.75 oz Amaro Meletti

0.75 oz Bonal Gentiane Quina

2 dashes Bittermens 'Elemakule Tiki Bitters

Combine all of the ingredients into a mixing glass. Add ice and stir until arctic cold. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or rocks glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

sharpie pen, colored pencil

I was kinda bored during the break and wanted to do some doodling. Much to my pleasant surprise, I discovered that the Sharpie Fine Point marking pen makes for a nice sketch pen. Pardon the sketch, I am not particularly artistic and the fact that it has been years since I last sketched makes it worse.

This drawing of Ernie Kovacs was done a few days after StippleGen 1 was released.

The dots StippleGen generated were converted to squares in Inkscape because a polargraph draws straight vectors much faster than curves ones. Even so, it took the machine roughly twenty hours to complete the drawing.

Well this is a 'first'. Go to take the cap off a Sharpie Marker and the body pulls apart.

Whilst buying the notebooks I also picked up three Sharpie fineliners, in black, blue and red. These are retractable felt tips with a padded grip that use Sharpie ink - they seem to perform well so far, and do not bleed through paper any more than anything else does. Quite pricey however (though I think the counter assistant at Smiths didn't apply a discount, they worked out to be £7.99 for three).

All of the guitars I have Sharpie'd on, to this point.

The Sharpie Show

"An exhibition by artists who utilize marking pens as part of their craft"

Opening Reception with Beats by DJ Phyz Ed and Live Printing by Two Rabbits:

Saturday, February 7th, 2009 from 6pm - 9pm

In the Graffiti subculture, practitioners are known as "writers" because graffiti is about writing your name on as many surfaces as possible. Although many writers elevate their art form to the level of creating huge and beautiful murals, they all began their journey as an artist by first learning to write and perfect their name. The Sharpie marker is often the first tool a writer acquires in his lifelong journey to hone his craft and in becoming an artist.

The Sharpie Show, an exhibition curated by renown graffiti artist Man One, featuring original pieces created using Sharpies by some of the best known graffiti artists in the country (and beyond). Aside from graffiti artists, work by tattoo artists and known illustrators; Lalo Alcaraz and Overton Loyd will be on display. From stylized hand signatures, to throw ups, piecebooks, stickers, and any other possible object that can be marked upon, this exhibit will demonstrate the level of creativity that can be achieved between an artist and his/her most basic tool - The Sharpie.

***Exhibit runs thru March 1st, 2009***

Another version of my Doggy Diner photo, this time half-toned by the program called, uh, "Rasterbator". Since drawing 10,000 vector circles would take over 90 hours on my polargraph, I took the svg file Rasterbator created into Inkscape and converted the circles to diamonds (by selecting the control points and changing them from arc to corner points). The 10,000 squares still took a little over 20 hour to draw.
