The image was obtained on a lek on the Idaho-Utah border. The grouse danced under my truck which was my blind.

I tried lightening this image even more, but then found that I lost the colour of the sky. The original was just a black silhouette and a richer sky, but thought I would lighten a little to show a bit of feather detail. I do have a shot or two of a different Sharp-tailed Grouse, taken in "proper" light, that I will post later.

The LAST Nanton Count was originally supposed to have taken place on 28 December 2013, but the weather forecast warned of a Flash Freeze, and so it was postponed till 5 January 2014. The weather was bright and sunny for us that day. However, photos taken on that day did not show how brutally cold it was! On the hour-long drive south of Calgary, we hit -34C (-29.2F)!!!!! It did eventually warm up a few degrees and thankfully, there was no or very little wind, which makes all the difference. The only walking we had to do was when we called in at various farms and homesteads. One backroad in particular had too much snow on it, so we had to leave that one out. Also, there was just too much snow in many of the farmyards, so we weren't able to check out all the trees and bushes as thoroughly as we would like to have done. I absolutely love the scenery on this Count, so I was able to get a few shots to show some typical snowy landscapes.

THIS year's Nanton Count was so different, with snow seen only in places, making the roads so much easier to drive, and temperatures that were much milder. As usual, I didn't get many birds photos, but I was thrilled to get a few shots of one of the Sharp-tailed Grouse. There were two of them on the fence at this farm.

After the Count, we returned to the meeting place at the home of Leah and Bill, where they had prepared a delicious supper that they so generously provide each year for us (as well as a breakfast snack). You couldn't wish for a nicer family (includes their son, Mike, who puts in a lot of effort organizing this annual Count each year).

I'm posting Andrew Hart's E-bird Summary of our small (just four of us in one car) group's day (leader Tony Timmons). Won't be of interest to most of you, but it helps me remember what we see from year to year!

I will also add leader Tony Timmons' account - simpler to read : ) A few of the numbers are slightly different in each summary, though I'm not quite sure why. We were so lucky to see so many Golden Eagles this Count.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. “The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship”

Lucius Annaeus Seneca: "On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!"

John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

The mating routine of sharp-tailed grouse involves males displaying communally at a traditional site (one used year after year). This site is known as a “lek.” Males compete for mates by performing a ritualized dance in conjunction with calling (often a booming sound) and inflating purplish air sacs along their necks. Females approach the edge of the lek, observe and eventually select a dance participant to mate with.

Sharpness Docks at one time were thriving with ships off-loading. Nowadays they are fairly quiet, with perhaps three or four cargo vessels visiting each week.

Vance Vivian fashion shoot, ca 1960, 1 /2-211189-F, K E Niven and Co. commercial negatives, Alexander Turnbull Library

It is always good to celebrate a successful Wellington business. Vance Vivian, Wellington’s very own specialty top-of-the-range men’s clothing store has just turned ninety. They are still going strong – setting the standards for sharp suits and other fine male fashion.

The firm was begun by Mt George Vance and Mr Harold Vivian in 1924. Vivian was bought out in the 1930s and since then the business has stayed in the Vance family. It is now owned and operated by the third-generation Vance brothers, Robert and Hamish.

The original store was up on the corner of Manners and Cuba streets, about where Banks Shoe Shop is now. Very soon a second shop was opened at the bottom end of Lambton Quay and, later, there were Vance Vivian shops in the Hutt, Masterton, Christchurch and Auckland. Nowadays the business is concentrated on the Lambton Quay shop, now up the other end of the Quay, opposite Cable Car Lane.

This fine photograph is part of a Vance Vivian men’s fashion shoot by the firm of K E Niven and company, one of Wellington’s foremost commercial photographers last century. It was a beautiful day and the models were photographed at various spots around the city. This elegant couple are posing with their glamour Jaguar on Clifton Terrace on Oriental Bay, gazing out over the harbour. You can see other scenes from the shoot below, up at the Museum, down at the Evans Bay boatyard and elsewhere.

Today I was able to test the Tamron 150-600mm in very cold weather. It was 7° Fahrenheit with a well below 0 wind-chill. This is at least a month earlier than I was expecting. The lens performed perfectly both autofocus and vibration control performed perfectly. The cold had no effect on the lens that I could see.

Here is a shot of a sharp-shinned hawk that has been stalking our feeders.

Modeling the black & gold "Gold 45 Revolver" Gold'N'Virtue swimsuits with the main equation to Moving Dimensions Theory on the swimsuits: dx4/dt=ic. Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! :) You can read more about my research and Hero's Journey Physics here:

herosjourneyphysics.wordpress.com/ MDT PROOF#2: Einstein (1912 Man. on Rel.) and Minkowski wrote x4=ict. Ergo dx4/dt=ic--the foundational equation of all time and motion which is on all the shirts and swimsuits. Every photon that hits my Nikon D800e's sensor does it by surfing the fourth expanding dimension, which is moving at c relative to the three spatial dimensions, or dx4/dt=ic!

A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic journey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour.
