The following came from the 1870 Utah Census:

SETH HARRIS PUTNAM Bountiful, Davis County

He is 39 and from Maine, Athalinda (Philbrick)is 33 from Maine, Emma 14 ME, Harris 1 ME. His mother, Ruth Walton Putnam 80 VT is with them. All three of these guys are brothers and sons of Israel Putnam and Ruth Walton from Rumford, Oxford County, Maine. There is a fourth brother, Horatio Gates Putnam who is here but not in the census. Seth and Athanlinda were married November 1, 1861

From the official History of Auburn Wyoming, The book 'Dear Hearts and Gentle People' had a few pages on Seth Putnam.

Seth H. Putnam was born in Rumford, Maine in April 20th, 1830. He had a normal childhood with well-to-do parents. He got off to a late start in terms of marriage, marrying Athalinda Philbrick on November 1, 1861. The above photo was taken just before their wedding day. Their home in Maine was very comfortable. Because of severe winters, a covered walkway was built from the house to the barn, an unheard of luxury. Seth was making a fortune as a beekeeper in the summer and shoe repairman during the long winters.

Seth and Athalinda joined the Mormon Church and gave up almost everything they owned when they came west after the Civil War. Athalinda's familiy didn't like the idea of her joining the church and disowned her .

Seth loved music, He loved to dance and it's said that he could call the (square) dances, the rage of the day, play violin and dance all at the same time. He was able to sing when he played the violin as well. He claimed he played the violin all the way from Maine to Auburn. Seth played thousands of dances, its said that he rarely missed a weekend dance in his life! The Putnams also brought an organ to Star Valley.

Seth Putnam also brought some of the first honey bees to Deseret. He carried the queen bee in a box in his pocket most of the time. The beekeeper won favor with Brigham Young, who was looking for a way to sweeten Zion because anything sweet was in short supply. Seth never wore a net or any protection when working with his bees because they never stung him. It is said that he loved the dandelion and some say he brought the first dandelions to Star Valley.

Seth always sported a long beard, he told friends that he shaved once but, he looked so different that it scared him and he never shaved again. Like all Putnam's he had a terrible temper, bue he didn't believe in swearing. When he got angry he would throw his hat on the ground and say, "Dam, Dam, and double Dam. He explained that dam wasn't a swear word because there are dams to dam water.

When Seth and Athalinda left Maine, the LDS Church was practicing polygamy in Utah. He promised his wife that he would never take another wife, and he would put it in writing if she wanted. She told him that if his word wasn't good neither was anything in writing. They arrived in Utah to discover that many of the men were taking second wives; Seth went looking for a young, new bride. When Annie Mariah Tucker came they were married on the 16th of November 1882 in an endowment House in Salt Lake City, Athalinda didn't like it, but made the best of the situation.

When establishing the LDS Church, Joseph Smith recorded numerous revelations he claimed to receive, often in answer to questions about the Bible, which are now included in the Doctrine and Covenants, part of the LDS canon. In answer to his question as to why many of the Old Testament leaders had more than one wife, Smith received what is now known as Section 132. Although the revelation was not recorded until 1843, Smith may have received it in the 1830s and married his first plural wife, Fanny Alger, in 1835. Polygamy was not openly practiced in the Mormon Church until 1852 when Orson Pratt, an apostle, made a public speech defending it as a tenet of the church. From 1852 until 1890, Mormon Church leaders preached and encouraged members, especially those in leadership positions, to marry additional wives.

A majority of the Latter-day Saints never lived the principle. The number of families involved varied by community; for example, 30 percent in St. George in 1870 and 40 percent in 1880 practiced polygamy, while only 5 percent in South Weber practiced the principle in 1880. Rather than the harems often suggested in non-Mormon sources, most Mormon husbands married only two wives. The wives usually lived in separate homes and had direct responsibility for their children. The wives often lived near each other, the husbands usually visited each wife on a daily or weekly basis. While there were the expected troubles between wives and families, polygamy was usually not the only cause, although it certainly could cause greater tension. Since polygamy was openly practiced for only a short time by Mormons, there were no established rules about how family members should relate to each other. Instead, each family adapted in their own way.

Polygamy was first outlawed in 1877, enforced in 1882 and Seth had to hide from the law. The family kept a lookout up the road. His house in Woodruff was situated in a way that he could slip out the back into deep brush easily. When the law showed up he would leave the house walking backward so that his tracks appeared to be walking to the house rather than from it, the ruse worked more than once, but he was finally arrested by U.S. Marshalls as noted in the LDS Church's official records. The charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence (witness) nonetheless Seth vowed to move out of Davis County.

He took his second wife Annie to Star Valley where Wyoming welcomed hard working polygamists settlers. Athalinda and the kids moved to Garden City, Utah for several years. In the fall of 1903 his eldest son Nate moved to Star Valley and Athalinda came with him. She refused to live with Seth and Annie, but moved into a little log house in Auburn, across from Al Putnam's house on First Street West, #805.

Seth was now in his 70's old and not showing any signs of slowing down. He played his violin at church dances and plays and was a performer still in demand. He went to an Old Folks Party on Saturday March 25th, 1908. He started feeling sick, went home that night by buckboard. Almost a hundred years ago to the day...he died peacefully in his sleep.

Just three of his seven children born to Athalinda lived to Adulthood, Frank (Nate), Pearl, and Mavel. Seth and Annie Mariah had four children; Orson Charles (my grandfather) was born in 1884, Roy, 1886, Mary 1889 and Clara 1894.

What girl doesn't love a pair of 'bang bang' shoes? You know; the kind that make you feel like you're Queen of the world. |

Londoner Aruna Seth has been designing 'It' shoes for celebrities and women with exceptional taste for several years. Her luxury embellished footwear has earned her the title of the 'pretty' shoe designer. I've been a huge fan since discovering her work at the start of 2009, so it was quite an honour to chat with Ms. Seth and discuss her love affair with shoes, her plans for 2010 and why she's inspired by the city.

Your family is established in the shoe world, When did your love affair of shoes begin?

My love for shoes began at a very early age. I was surrounded by shoes day in, day out. I remember doing work experience with my dad and it was fascinating to go into the factory and sample rooms where I'd see the drawings right through to the actual production.

When you're going through the design process, who is your muse? Who do you envision wearing your work?

I have to say that I base my shoe designs on what I personally love, I have to passionately adore the shoe I'm designing.

Your ballerina shoe Rochelle was picked up by designer Eric Daman, famously known for styling the cast of Gossip Girls - How exciting was that for you?

It was very, very exciting - a big highlight for me. Actress Goldie Hawn recently wore my Cinderella shoe to the Nine premier in New York and that was an amazing feeling.

The nature of your job means you get to travel a lot, and expect that you must be familiar with the fashion capitals of the world, how does the city of London help inspire you?

London is a very diverse place with different cultures, I love that fact that you can experience totally different things on any given day. I think that's why a lot of designers reside in London actually. A good example of the way culture intertwine is my background; my mother is Jamaican and my father Indian, so it's definitely the merger of all the experiences, all together that influence and inspire my work.

If you had to pick one design from your fabulous collection, which would you choose as your utmost favourite?

It would have to be the one that I wear the most - the Cerise; it's a wedge covered in swarovski crystal. I love it because it's a real head turner; if I wear it any where in the world, no matter where I am, I'll be paid a compliment. But even though they have wow factor, they are still wearable; that's what I aim for, I want me shoes to have elegance, wow factor and remain comfortable.

2009 was a major success for you, what with celebrities and socialites loving your designs and plans for a London boutique - so what's next for Aruna Seth?

The boutique will be opening in Chelsea in time for Summer and we'll be busy with the glitzy award ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars. The shoes will be stocked by Browns and also in a US department store very soon, 2010 is going to be about branching out in America.
