White Star Service, Cunard's service brand aboard the Queen Mary 2 and her sister ships, is what's left of White Star Lines, the former british shipping company most famous for its ill-fated flagship, the RMS Titanic.

The QM2's staff live up to the big name and the heritage of the golden age of transatlantic lines. All helpful, smiling, polite - yet what I enjoyed most was sitting at the bar, chatting with the bartenders and getting to know those people as much as our different positions permit. I sat by as the fresh news spread that Menno had proposed Jennifer, getting even the senior waitresses of her shift all giggly and excited. I photographed her engagement ring. And by the way I got to know of the mysterious Black Star Party (staff only, no passengers allowed), a charming secret of the professional microcosm of this famous liner. It must have been a good party, dark circles around many eyes spoke volumes the day after.

This particular waitress' name was Ramona, a Romanian with a cute accent, the "Rrrrrrrrrr" she made when teased by her coworkers was ravishing, and I wish I could have attended that party.

Which only serves to prove an important fact of life: The grass is always greener on the other side, no matter how fine a meadow you're grazing on...

(This picture is geotagged, at least roughly, according to the ship's noon report that day, as we were making our way headed SW along the coast of Canada. We were still about a thousand miles from New York.)

Dedication to service motivated more than 40 students to trade in their first full week of summer vacation to help others. The high schools from across the Diocese of Saginaw are nearing the end of the week-long service camp, Youth Encounter Service (Y.E.S.). Youth and leaders worked on three houses in conjunction with the One Week, One Street urban revitalization effort. Their efforts along Ezra Rust Avenue included painting siding and walls, repairing porches and roofs and replacing windows. Sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, Y.E.S. allows high school students to learn about and fight poverty through the perspective of Catholic social teaching. Participants stayed at St. Stephen Parish Center in Saginaw, where evening activities included guest speakers, prayer and reflection.
