While the big story in downstate Illinois is all of the rain and flooding, Page 2 news was a CSX train on the Illinois Sub (former B&O) east of St. Louis. The reporting in the O'Fallon, IL and Belleville, IL newspapers and Facebook streams was sensational. How dare CSX run a train on shut down tracks! Ironically, the fine folks of O'Fallon had just completed a $7 million overpass in town just before the line closed in 2015. Now they are complaining that CSX didn't tell them a train was coming through town!
The old B&O had been severed in multiple locations in 2015 and 2016 - Caseyville, IL rail removal, Shattuc & Odin diamond removals. Last week, the rail went back in at Caseyville and a MofW truck was seen highrailing the mainline (the diamonds stayed out). In effect, the B&O was a long spur from HN Cabin in ESTL to Shattuc, IL.
On April 29th, CSX sent out an X698-28 with 212 company cars for deep storage / scrap on the west end of the B&O. CSX 7790 is doing walking speed through the burg of Aviston, IL as a trainmaster and a fusee protect traffic on Page St. X698 would drop 101 cars here in the siding (mostly 89' flats) before continuing east to Carlyle, IL where the crew would expire on hours.
All told, it took 3 crews (2 from Vincennies!)to cover the 50 miles - stopping and flagging each crossing along the way, put away the 212 cars and return to Rose Lake. Original crew stalled on Caseyville Hill (wet rail, crappy power and stopping to flag crossings). 2nd crew shoved train over the top then cabbed east to recrew and expired at Carlyle. 3rd crew sashayed the train around at Carlyle to get the power on the west end and shove to Shattuc before returning the motors to Rose Lake (at around 0040 this morning!).
More cars are staged at Rose Lake for another storage train. Might take a couple of weeks to get all of the sidings and mainline stocked with "unneeded" equipment. It's a brave new CSX under EHH control.

Griffith Radiator Service in Ontario, California. While I was taking the picture, one of the long-time employees came out and talked to me. It was obviously a neon sign at one time. He said that kids kept breaking the glass tubes, so they finally had them removed. He also said that the radiator used to rotate. That’s kinda cool.
