Stables erected for John Hart’s Glanville Hall, now used as function centre.

“Mr. Hart, of Glanville Hall, is having a large addition made to the outhouses of the place in a building 60 feet long by 32 wide. It will be devoted to the purposes of a carriage-shed, harness-room, men's room, and laundry. The material used is Dry Creek stone and slate roof. Mr. W. Beattie is architect.” [Register 18 Jan 1877]

Dedicated to all those who fell during the Great War 1914–1919.

The laying of the four corner stones was performed on Sunday afternoon (27-4-1924) by the Mayor of Port Adelaide (Mr. H. Slade), on behalf of the citizens, Mrs. Magnum on behalf of the mothers, Col. C.P. Butler on behalf of the Returned Soldiers and Sailors' Imperial League, and Miss E. Sanders on behalf of the widows and orphans. The corner stones are symbolical of the men who rallied from the four corners of the globe in answer to Britain's call. In a cavity a canister containing a copy of South Australian newspapers of Saturday April 26, was placed under the citizens' stone.

On 24 May 1925 the unveiling was performed by Lieutenant Colonel L O Betts O.B.E., President of the Semaphore and Port Adelaide Sub Branch R.S. & S.I.L of Australia.

This memorial was built using seventy tons of granite from the quarries at Harcourt in Victoria. Clocks are installed on each face of the monument: the structure is 27 feet high topped by a Carara marble figure of Peace.

Mr I. Topham, of Norwood, was the designer and builder. The design was selected by exhaustive ballot from the 30 designs submitted.

Australia is home to some of the most dangerous animals in the world.

According to naturalist Steve Backshall - author of Venom: a Study of Toxins in the Natural World (New Holland; 2007) - “Australia has so many of the world's most venomous, toxic and toothy beasts. However, the most dangerous animals to humans are horses and honeybees. Almost no-one dies from spider, snake, croc and shark bites on the whole continent. With a little common sense, no one visiting Oz should be unduly worried about the wildlife; quite the opposite, it is a great reason to visit."

This is where the CPR's Mission BC-Sumas USA branch crosses the old BC Electric interurban (now Southern Rwy of BC, owned by MRL). I can't think of anyplace else that still uses semaphores. The little shed used to be used by BCE crews to turn the signals against the CPR. Once the signals were so aligned, the shed door locked, and the brakeman could not get out until the signals were reset for the CPR!

Decorative features in the Ozone Theatre (former Institute & Town Hall), restored 1993, re-opened as library 14 Feb 1994..

“the remodelling of the old institute building, in front of which two shops are to be erected. Two-dome ceilings are to be put in, and a commodious lounge and dress circle. The floor will be sloped towards the front, where there is to be a massive proscenium. . . On the ground floor the library, subscribers' and public reading rooms will be established. . . The top floor will contain a billiards-room, secretary's office, kitchen, and conveniences, the back portion being a soldiers' hall.” [Advertiser 15 Jul 1929]

“Ozone Theatres Limited . . . at the reconstructed Semaphore Hall last night were treated to four surprises. These were the wonderful transformation that has been effected in the art decoration of the interior of the hall, delightful effect of indirect lighting, general excellence of the programme, and clarity of the voice production by the talkie equipment. Other pleasing features in the new theatre are the comfortable tip seats, with ample room between the rows. . . The art decoration is in Adam and Jacobean style, with a modernistic touch. The proscenium is, indeed, a work of art, and is the original design of Mr Chris A. Smith (architect), as are window and ceiling ornamentations. . . The theatre serves a large and growing district.” [News 10 Dec 1929]

I'm involved in a Uk-based artist's group. Semaphore is our second-annual mixed-media exhibition. New works by myself, Eleanor Beyer, James Keniston, Natasha Markham, Julian Russell, and Anthony Udall will be on show, with media ranging from painting to photography to wood to ceramics.

With threatening skys on a cold november afternoon a local for Grimsby pulls into Barnetby le Wold station. The mass of semaphore signals appears soon to be replaced judging by the Network rail activity around the station.
