Diverted LNER services at Haydon Bridge on 12th October 2019. Heading East is an HST set forming 1E11, the 08:44 Edinburgh to Kings Cross service, whilst in the distance an Azuma set operating 1S04, the 06:15 Kings Cross to Edinburgh has suffered a signal check. The diverted services are now working amongst an enhanced Northen DMU service, tending to catch up to the units. The Autumn colours are now coming to life.

I have posted this image not for aesthetics, but to catalogue the demise of semaphore signalling in South Wales. The location is Cogan Junction, near Penarth, South Wales. I believe the semaphores are from Aberthaw, which were replaced by LED lights in January 2013. Ystrad Mynach and Bargoed signal boxes were decommissioned in September, and I am told that Barry signal box will go in January 2014.
An eastbound Finger Lakes Railway freight train lead by B23-7 nos 2301 and 2303 passing an old semaphore signal in Solvay NY in 2007.
Kite display at Semaphore Beach, South Australia. Finally got to test out my new Hoya Pro HD CPL filter. Does a great job of bringing out the blues in the sky.
There are still semaphores active on a US mainline. Taken August 21, 2022 at Levy NM their days are numbered as most have been replaced. I believe there are also a set at Wagon Mound NM but I did not make that far south. This section is limited to Amtrak's Southwest Chief and a handful of BNSF work trains.
Decorative features in the Ozone Theatre (former Institute & Town Hall), restored 1993, re-opened as library 14 Feb 1994..
“the remodelling of the old institute building, in front of which two shops are to be erected. Two-dome ceilings are to be put in, and a commodious lounge and dress circle. The floor will be sloped towards the front, where there is to be a massive proscenium. . . On the ground floor the library, subscribers' and public reading rooms will be established. . . The top floor will contain a billiards-room, secretary's office, kitchen, and conveniences, the back portion being a soldiers' hall.” [Advertiser 15 Jul 1929]
“Ozone Theatres Limited . . . at the reconstructed Semaphore Hall last night were treated to four surprises. These were the wonderful transformation that has been effected in the art decoration of the interior of the hall, delightful effect of indirect lighting, general excellence of the programme, and clarity of the voice production by the talkie equipment. Other pleasing features in the new theatre are the comfortable tip seats, with ample room between the rows. . . The art decoration is in Adam and Jacobean style, with a modernistic touch. The proscenium is, indeed, a work of art, and is the original design of Mr Chris A. Smith (architect), as are window and ceiling ornamentations. . . The theatre serves a large and growing district.” [News 10 Dec 1929]
A priority intermodel train from Tacoma, WA to Kansas City, MO (P-TACKCM) splits the semaphores at MP 193.5. Just a couple months after this shot was taken all the remaining semaphores along MRL's 4th Subdivision were removed.
'Running round' at Ramsbottom. Very nice to have the platform to ourselves and compose a couple of pictures without any intervening punters!

Semaphore's beach is the busiest of those on the LeFevre Peninsula, as it is the most convenient beach to people living in the northern suburbs of metropolitan Adelaide. There are large car parks on the foreshore to accommodate visitors. During weekends of the summer months the beach is patrolled by the Semaphore Surf Life Saving club, with the swimming flags often being placed 50m south of the jetty or outside the club at Point Malcolm (1.5 km south of the jetty).
The beach is wide, with a large amount of wide sand. The surf is low and good for swimming, but surfing is generally not possible. Sandbars extend out a considerable distance, with holes, troughs and channels in the bars creating the major safety hazard on a generally safe beach. Other substantial hazards on the beach are jumping from the jetty (the depth of the water under the jetty varies considerably during the day and between visits) and non-swimmers climbing on the groyne at Semaphore South finding themselves cut off from land by a rising tide. Both activities are illegal, which is pointed out by warding signs; nevertheless, both activities have claimed lives in past years.
Semaphore Tower (1923-1929) at HMNB Portsmouth, United Kingdom.
While the Admiralty had expirimented with semaphores, i.e. optical telegraphs since the 1790s, a permanent semaphore network linking London with Portsmouth was only completed in 1822. Signals were sent (or received) from a tower in the west of the dockyard which was destroyed in a fire in 1913. A rebuilt tower was opened in 1930 and is still in used by the Royal Naval Reserve.
Old-fashioned train signal, or "semaphore," which uses lights for nighttime use and an arm at various angles for daytime use. See the Train Semaphore Signal blog entry for more.
