As I come close to filling a 10x20' storage unit with stuff from the house we're about to put on the market, I've been observing other people at the units. Some have excess household stuff, including clothing hanging on racks. In our society of excess, that's about what I expected.
I've also come to see the variety of ways people use rented locker space. I've noticed panel trucks, owned by businesses, with crews unloading items such as office furniture. I've units them used as small workshops for repairs. Some of the people I've observed make me wonder if their self-storage unit is a place to relax for a few moments.
These businesses seem to exist in every community. Though I haven't figured it out entirely, I've learned that self-storage is more than meets the eye.

One of Santa's secret stores? Staff at the west London branch of a self-storage company overlooking the elevated section of the M4 at Brentford - one of the busiest roads in Britain - are raising a festive smile for thousands of motorists this Christmas. The "S" in their "Self Storage" signs has been switched off to carry a special seasonal message at the building on the A4 Great West Road near the Chiswick Roundabout. And if you've been good all year and not upset the speed cameras, you might even spot Father Christmas himself checking on his presents' store. Both at 5 pm and again at 6 pm (perhaps depending on the location of Echizen city) the melody of Dvorak's "Going Home" is broadcast by loudspeaker. This recording comes just around that time and the sound of a temple bell being rung drifts across the fading light. One temple roof stands out near the left edge of the frame, echoing the majestic mountain shape at the center of the frame. But there are several within a 250m radius of the lens, so it is difficult to say if the one in view is also the source of the bell sound. The foreground once was filled with homes and/or workshops and shops some generations ago. Now it serves as parking space with monthly rates for the residents of the narrow streets with no garage attached to their lots. The relationship of personal automobile and 1000 year old city layout is not always easy or convenient, but somehow it functions.
