When I think of happiness I picture sunshine, clean air and going barefoot. I remember being a little kid and running around everywhere without my shoes and just being effortlessly happy in those moments. As for the health aspect of these photos I think it’s important to remember that mental health is JUST as important as the rest of your body’s health. It’s crazy how when your mind struggles your body struggles as well. I remember the hard times I was having in Seoul this past semester and how all I wanted to do was take my shoes off and run. (It’s a little cheesy but come on I’m a Scorpio what do you expect from me ?????) So without a healthy mind and body, self love is not possible. And in order to find happiness we have to find moments, even the small ones, that make us happy. From there we can start to learn what self love really is. Capturing those moments and truly doing what makes us happy is the purest (and I believe) the most effective form of self love.

I've been feeling super sick and exhausted (physically and mentally) all week so this is pretty much what I've been doing every morning, lounging with the dogs (btw, that little puppy ear I am grabbing belongs to our newest family member, Whiskey the boxer. He's a pain in the butt but he's the sweetest thing ever).
I want to try to be as honest and open with these self portraits as I possibly can. Although I promise I am more exciting than this haha.

When I was young someone told me that moles are where the badness from inside us breaks through. It was meant as a joke but I somehow took it for granted. And looking in the mirror seeing the crazy amount of moles covering my body I started to wonder how big that badness inside me must be.
Later every now and then someone asked me why i wouldn't get some of the birthmarks removed which ended up in me starting to think my skin was ugly.
It took me for ever to make peace with these 'flaws' and even longer to start to like them.
Only now I manage to see how they are the stars of my body that make me who i am.

Beyond their beauty, snowflakes also symbolize purity and the cycle of rebirth. As they journey from the sky to the earth, only to evaporate and rise again, they mirror our own potential for transformation and renewal.
Lemme tell you a funny story that both predates and involves this shot by Emmanuela (her take on it can be found here):
I was completely exhausted one day after work and simply just plopped down against the wall as I waited for an elevator to take me down so I could get the heck home. I was soon joined by a couple of other staff members.
One of them - long on degrees and initials after her name but well short on either common sense or human decency - smiled, stooped over, actually rubbed my ample gut and said something to the effect of "rubbing the Buddha belly for luck" and laughed.
Since she was a convert to Buddhism, I suspect she thought she was making a friendly gesture in the name of fun. Since I'm very self-conscious about my weight (having not originally been a "big guy") I in fact immediately placed the gesture HIGH on my list of most insensitive and insulting actions directed toward me.
Where, years later, it still ranks today.
We went our separate ways once the elevator arrived - and later professionally as first she then I left the company.
Fast forward to this photo shoot. In her pre-shoot interviews, Emmanuela asks her subjects to list parts of their bodies that the do and do NOT like. Suffice to say, my paunch was on the NOT list.
As is her wont, Emmanuela respected my NOT list throughout the week. With the exception of this picture. She handed me this glass vase, had me sit in the light and fired away.
She wanted to make a point.
"This IS you," she would explain. "And all of you is beautiful. I want you to see that.
"As you look through this crystal, I want you to see that. And I want you to LOVE AND EMBRACE YOUR BUDDHA BELLY." And, no, she didn't know about my elevator experience - until now.
BTW, Emmanuela has a lot of degrees and letters after her name - but there's also a HUGE sense of compassion, prescience, common sense, love and support thrown in.
And she makes damn good points.
DEDICATIONS: Emmanuela, of course. And to the slowly-shrinking gut, which in a way has helped me be more approachable as some sort of "big 'ol teddy bear type" Who knew a body part could actually put people at ease?
And, of course, to Francis Albert Sinatra , who makes the thought of embracing myself and those I love feel like beautiful music to my ears. (Great karaoke song, btw....)

in the past when i used to do alot of selfies they always symbolized being loved or being wanting. fear or never being loved of accepted has always been in the back of my mind, something in my past i never healed from. It seems i have returned back to this theme. As i am getting older and i wonder why i am still alone, I am a very independent person and i have never really needed someone to be there but it would be nice to have someone. maybe my time just isnt there yet. as most o my friends are married and have kids and have a stable life. here i am still wondering the what if.
I may again start to make this some what a dairy of my thoughts and dreams, i know when i had my heart on fire account (which i never should have deleted) it seemed to helo tremendously.
so that being said be prepared for more selfies and lots of writings :)
After a fun night of laughing and screaming with some of my favorite people, I woke up this morning grateful to have come as far as I have.
For the longest time I was convinced that I was not strong enough to live with this illness, it terrified me, waking up every morning afraid of the way I was feeling. But, I realized that in the moments that I feel like I can not continue to fight what's inside my head, I am not doing it by myself. When my belief in myself begins to waiver, those who love and care for me still believe that I can do this; and that is the fire that continues to drive me. I am strong enough.
