I did not take these photos. They were on a Facebook post I saw today along with the following narrative. I was so moved by it that I decided to share it here, too.

"I saw these images on @timkennedymma feed. Please, look at each one. Pause, give them your consideration. America’s exceptional armed forces have altered the course of the world for the better. From the Union Army defeating slave owning confederates, to the Greatest Generation and her Allies vanquishing the Nazis or our special operators hunting down the perpetrators of 9/11. We count the names of each fallen solider lest they be countless. They are the good guys. They run to the sound of gunfire. They know pain and suffering we never will. They have given us the most free and decent society planet earth has ever seen. We run the risk of losing that decency when we fail to instill gratitude in the minds of our youth or the perspective of what it actually means to be free- should they never learn of the selfless sacrifice of our armed service members in the face of oppressive evil. So join me in showing support for our fallen. Take a quiet moment to really consider the sacrifice. And if you use the comments section on posts like this to bitch and moan about America please understand there are countries in the world where criticizing your government will get you killed or imprisoned. Criticism is a right and necessity in amending the flawed systems of man. So by all means, let your voice be heard. But never forget your right to free expression is paid for in blood. May God give their souls rest, and may they live in our memories this weekend and always."

Mavis Henslow was a woman of exceptional lineage, descended from a long line of noteworthy individuals. Her 25th great-great grandfather was none other than the renowned English theatre proprietor and manager of the Elizabethan Age, Philip Henslowe. Such a heritage bestowed upon Mavis a connection to the arts and the power of expression.

Despite her impressive lineage, Mavis faced societal limitations as a woman in her time. Born into an era when gender roles were rigidly defined, she encountered numerous obstacles that restricted her aspirations. However, Mavis possessed an unwavering spirit that refused to be stifled by these constraints.

Mavis received her education from a dedicated governess who recognised her thirst for knowledge and the innate intelligence that resided within her. Through the governess's guidance, Mavis embarked on a journey of learning and self-discovery, delving into various subjects that ignited her curiosity.

As Mavis grew older, she discovered her gift for healing and became fascinated by spiritualism. Her studies and experiences led her to develop profound abilities in these realms, transcending the boundaries of traditional understanding. Mavis could perceive energies, offer solace to those in pain, and provide comfort to the spiritually seeking.

With her remarkable abilities, Mavis had the potential to become a world-renowned figure in the field of healing and spiritualism. Yet, she chose a different path, one that was characterised by privacy and humility. Mavis shunned the allure of fame and the accompanying public adulation, preferring instead to focus on her purpose, helping others without seeking personal acclaim.

Throughout her life, Mavis dedicated herself to aiding those in need, utilising her healing talents and spiritual insights to bring solace and enlightenment to countless individuals. Her gentle demeanour, compassionate nature, and profound wisdom made her a cherished figure within her community.

While Mavis's contributions to the world may not have garnered global recognition, the lives she touched, the souls she healed, and the minds she inspired were immeasurable. She left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mavis's extraordinary journey serves as a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and selflessness. Despite the limitations placed upon her by society, she overcame obstacles and harnessed her unique gifts for the betterment of others. Mavis, an extraordinary woman, showed the world that true greatness lies not in fame or accolades but in the profound impact one has on the lives of those around them.

Tale: The difference between Love and Obsession

The distinction between love and obsession lies in how you handle your affection and how you treat the thing you care about.

When you truly love a flower, you nurture and tend to it to promote its optimal growth, rather than cutting it down and possessing it.

This contrast between finding Happiness in watching it flourish and Happiness from claiming it as your own indicates your selfless or selfish inclinations towards love.

ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ.-:**★**:-.ღ

" Possessing things obsessively and labeling them as yours doesn't define your self-worth or make you stronger. Instead, it can reveal your dependence, lack of confidence, and insecurity.

Release the urge to possess, and explore your inner strength and genuine self-worth by seeking happiness beyond ownership. Don't rely on shallow labels for validation. "

PADDY, JAGO and DAISY-MAUD: "Hullo Scout! Hullo Emmett!"

SCOUT: "Oh! Hullo Paddy, Jago and Daisy-Maud!"

EMMETT: "Hullo Daisy-Maud, Jago and Paddy! Daisy-Maud, may I have a cuddle?"

DAISY-MAUD: "Of course you may, Emmett!" *Cuddles Emmett.*

EMMETT: "Thank you Daisy-Maud! You give the best hugs."

PADDY: "What are you doing, Scout?"

SCOUT: "Oh Emmett and I are writing our Christmas lists for Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear."

PADDY: "That is very oranised, Scout."

SCOUT: "Well, you cannot be too prepared for Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, Paddy!" *Nods seriously.* "Especially when it comes to wishes!"

JAGO: "Scout's list looks quite long Daisy-Maud." *Peers at Scout's Christmas list.*

DAISY-MAUD: *Whispers.* "Yes, but Emmett's page is blank." *Peers at Emmett's page with concern.*

PADDY: "Let's see what is on your list, Scout." *Looks at Scout's list.* "Tutus, a Red Riding Hood teapot like Mama Kim's." *Looks at Scout in alarm.*

SCOUT: "What?!?!"

PADDY: "Daddy gave that teapot especially to Mama Kim, Scout!"

SCOUT: "Well, he should have given it to me instead, Paddy!"

*Nods emphatically.*

PADDY: "I'm not sure that is how it works, Scout."

SCOUT: "Well, it should do, Paddy." *Nods more.*

PADDY: "Well, let's keep going through your list. Tutus." *Pauses.* "Oh I think you might have made a mistake, Scout."

SCOUT: "Me!" *Horrified.* "A mistake?" *Indignant.* "Never!"

PADDY: "Well, you have listed tutus twice, Scout."

SCOUT: "No I haven't, Paddy!" *Shakes head.*

PADDY: "Yes you have, Scout, at number one and number three on your list." *Points to entries on the list with paw.*

SCOUT: "No I haven't, Paddy!" *Shakes head more.*

PADDY: "Yes you have, Scout!" *Points again.* "Look there!"

SCOUT: "I don't need to look at my list to know that I haven't listed tutus twce, Paddy!" *Shakes head.* "I have listed tutus four times! They are also at number five and number seven on my list."

PADDY: "But why, Scout? Surely once is enough."

SCOUT: "No it isn't Paddy! Father Christmas is quite ancient, like you, and the Christmas Bear is very busy helping make up for Father Christmas' ancientness! If they skim read my list they may miss that I want tutus if I only list it once."

PADDY: "Oh!" *Surprised.*

DAISY-MAUD: "Umm... Scout," *Tentatively.* "Chocolate isn't spelt like that."

SCOUT: "What?"

DAISY-MAUD: "On your list, Scout: you have spelt chocolate incorrectly."

SCOUT: "Oh pooh!" *Disappointed.* "Well, I'm sure the Christmas Bear can work out that I am asking for chocolate. He's a very smart bear, you know, Daisy-Maud."

DAISY-MAUD: "Oh I know, Scout."

JAGO: "But Emmett, your list is empty."

PADDY: "Empty, Emmett?" *Alarmed.*

EMMETT: "I know, Jago and Paddy." *Smiles happily.*

PADDY: "But why, Emmett?"

DAISY-MAUD: "Don't you want anything nice from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear, Emmett?"

EMMETT: *Shakes head.*

JAGO: "Isn't there something you are wishing for, Emmett?"

EMMETT: "What could I possibly wish for, Jago, that I don't already have? I have everything I need, or ever wished for right here."

JAGO: "You have, Emmett?"

EMMETT: "Yes, Jago!" *Smiles broadly. "When I was in the orphanage for bears in Shropshire, I had many bear friends, and there was plenty of food to fill my grumbly tummy, so I was quite happy. However, all I wished for, juts like everybear there, was to have a Mummy or Daddy of my very own to love me and give me kisses and cuddles."

PADDY: "And now you have that with Daddy!"

EMMETT: "Yes, Paddy! I do! I'm so happy now! And if that weren't enough, I have a family with all of you, and I have a best friend in Funky at Mummy Marian's house! I have everything I have ever dreamed of, and ever so much more!"

DAISY-MAUD: "Oh Emmett!" *Tears well in eyes.* "That is so lovely! I am so touched. I shall give you another cuddle just for that!"

EMMETT: "Oh I'd like that Daisy-Maud!"

DAISY-MAUD: *Cuddles Emmett.*

SCOUT: "There must be something you want, Emmett! I can't have a full list, and you have nothing on yours!"

EMMETT: "But I just said, Scout, I don't need anything."

JAGO: "Well, perhaps you would like some sweets like Scout has on his list."

DAISY-MAUD: "Or chocolates."

PADDY: "Or tutus."

SCOUT: "Paddy no!" *Alarmed. * "Emmett can't ask for tutus, too!" *Shakes head vehmently.* "Rosie and I are asking for tutus, and I'm sure there are only so many tutus to go around!" *Concerned.* "I don't want to miss out!"

PADDY: "Alright Scout. Not tutus, Emmett."

DAISY-MAUD: "There must be something that you want, deep in your heart of hearts, Emmett."

EMMETT: *Sighs deeply.* "Well, there is one thing I'd love."

PADDY, DAISY-MAUD, JAGO and SCOUT: "What Emmett?"

EMMETT: *Sighs again.* "Well, I had a friend at the orphanage for bears in Shropshire called Edgar. I sometimes wish that Edgar was here too. I wish I could share all that I have with him. He is a very lovely, softly spoken bear who wears a pretty floral bow tie. He is very kind and gentle, and I know he would love all of you, and you would love him. I also know he would love my best friend Funky, and Funky would love Edgar too!"

PADDY: "Well, why don't you put that on your list, Emmett?"

JAGO: "Yes, a capital idea, Emmett!"

DAISY-MAUD: "I agree, Emmett."

EMMETT: "Oh, I couldn't ask Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear to bring Edgar all the way here, Paddy, JAGO and Daisy-Maud! They will be far too busy filling Scout's wishes, and Rosie's and all of yours!"

DAISY-MAUD: "Well, there is no harm in asking, Emmett."

SCOUT: "I think you should write it down, Emmett. I think it would be a good idea. It's almost as good an idea as me asking for tutus and a Little Red Riding Hood teapot like Mama Kim's!"

JAGO: "I think you should write it on your list."

EMMETT: "Edgar and I had a friend called Benjamin. Do you think I would be greedy if I asked Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear to bring him to Daddy's house too?"

DAISY-MAUD: "No, I don't think so, Emmett. In fact, I think that Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear would be pleased that you have been so selfless in your wish, Emmett."

SCOUT: "Are you suggesting that I am being selfish, asking Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear for tutus and a Little Red Riding Hood teapot like Mama Kim's, Daisy-Maud?" *Indigant.*

DAISY-MAUD: "Oh no, Scout!" *Shakes head.* "All I am suggesting is that your list is more... err... what Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear would expect from little bears around the world, whereas Emmett's wish is a little bit different to the usual."

SCOUT: "Gosh! I hope that lots of bears around the world don't ask for tutus, or there will be a tutu shortage!" *Puts paw to mouth in concern.*

DAISY-MAUD: "I'm sure you won't miss out, sweet Scout."

JAGO: "Emmett, write down on the top of your list that you wish for Edgar and... and... what is the other bear's name again?"

EMMETT: "Benjamin, Jago!"

JAGO: "Thank you! Write down on your list that you would like Edgar and Benjamin to come and stay here with you, at Daddy's house."

DAISY-MAUD: "Yes do, Emmett!"

SCOUT: "Just don't write down tutus on your list, Emmett."

EMMETT: "Not even if I write down that I wish for you to have them, Scout?"

SCOUT: "Best not risk it, Emmett." *Shakes head.*

EMMETT: *Writes that he would like Edgar and Benjamin to come and live with him at Daddy's house.*

JAGO: "Well done, Emmett."

DAISY-MAUD: "Indeed, very well done, sweet Emmett."

EMMETT: "But Paddy, what if Daddy doesn't like Edgar and Benjamin coming to stay with us?"

PADDY: "That won't happen if Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear fulfil your wish, Emmett." *Shakes head.*

EMMETT: "But how do you know, Paddy?"

PADDY: "Because Daddy has a saying, Emmett."

EMMETT: "What is it, Paddy?"

PADDY, SCOUT, DAISY-MAUD and JAGO: "There is always room for one more bear!"

EMMETT: "But Edgar and Benjamin and two bears!"

PADDY: "There is always room for two more bears!" *Nods emphatically.*

Scout's Christmas present from Father Christmas and the Christmas Bear in 2022 was a beautiful 1930s Little Red Riding Hood tea set for six. It was made by an unknown maker in Stoke-on-Trent. Not all the set is being used today. It features beautiful, brightly coloured transfers of different parts of the faerie tale.

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.

Daisy Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.

Made by Merrythought in England, Emmett is a charming little bear, sweet and smiling, crafted from multi-tonal marl grey mohair and featuring golden velvet paws. He is accessorised with a classic tartan woollen scarf. He is number 23 or a limited worldwide edition of 200.

"The people of Latvia are thankful to the medics in Latvia and all over the world for their selfless service during the COVID-19 pandemic and have put up a monument by a famous Latvian artist to health care personnel, supported by donations of almost 20 local companies," said a release from the organizers of the initiative.

#smalltowninertia Helena on the steps leading to her apartment February 2017

Visited Helena today to discuss how to approach her coming story update. Much has happened in her life over the last 16 months and her selfless, candid and insightful sharing of all her experiences is truly inspiring.

We made this first photograph for the update this morning, full story to follow.

I am not prepared to bury my head in the sand and pretend that everything is alright when it is in fact the opposite.

I am not prepared to turn and walk away when I know that I should stand and face it all.

I am not prepared to close my eyes to unpleasant things and to stand by without taking action when needed to save a life.

Neither should you

It seems that lately I have lots of friends dealing with lots of pain right now - sickness, personal crisis, death... Isn't it wonderful, though, that God has given us "Angels on Earth"? Those selfless people who are always there to help others when times are tough. Do you know people like this? What would we do without these people? I have seen so many selfless acts in the past few weeks. It so warms my heart in a world that can sometimes seem so cold.

Eustache de Saint-Pierre was the oldest of the six burghers and the first to volunteer to sacrifice to save his native city. The Calais city council originally suggested this figure as the focus of Rodin's monument, but the artist chose to give all five burghers equal stature.

The historical narrative states that the surrendering burghers wore shirts and breeches, but Rodin decided to clad his figures in nonspecific drapery.Their timeless appearance contributes to the monument's function as a broader symbol of selfless patriotic heroism-Brooklyn Museum

A special day of remembering in our hearts, the bravery, selflessness and sacrafices, all made for our freedom.

Happy Birthday to my Guru P.P. Pramukh Swami Maharaj

This past week I got to shoot with Joel Robison, aka Boy Wonder. His kindness and selflessness surpassed even his genuine online persona, and my heart melted when I hugged him. He did a photo of me and I did one of him, pictured here, and it was a dream come true! I shot with so many photographers last week and it was really and truly a transformational experience, getting to meet so many new and kind people.

This picture is adding to my series "Fears & Fairytales". I first posted a picture from it a while back and have been quietly adding, not mentioning when the series has been extended, so I want to share this new blog post with you detailing the 6 pictures I have created for it so far: shadenproductions.com/blog/2013/01/06/series-fears-fairyt...

And, if you have the time, an additional blog post that is very dear to my heart, on the subject of competition: shadenproductions.com/blog/2013/01/05/the-thing-about-com...

Much more than a dozen! Wishing all the beautiful, selfless, strong mother's of the world a fabulous, love-filled day! Mom, you were the best Mom ever, I hope you & Dad are celebrating this Heavenly Mother's Day together =) I miss & love you both so much!

Its symbolism is universal, but the original scarecrows were nothing like the now familiar straw-stuffed icon of Halloween. ... To a farmer they may simply be a symbol of the death and resurrection of the crops.

Pinocchio, a marionette, must earn the right to become a real boy by proving to be truthful, brave and selfless.

I was originally going to wait until January 31st to share this photo, but based on what I decided to put in the caption, I think you'll understand the urgency of sharing it sooner rather than later...

This will be my "parting shot" for 2020. Of all the photos I took this year, this seemed like the most appropriate one to share as we look to put this difficult year behind us and hope for a better one in 2021.

2020 was tough for just about all of us, whether it was due to life not being normal due to all the shutdowns and restrictions, having our business hit hard, or, of course, ourselves or a loved one battling COVID-19 itself. Thankfully, only the first item in that list affected me personally, but I know many others who were affected by the others. The most recent difficult news I received was just three days before Christmas.

Some of you know that I'm in ministry, and I have several college students I meet with on a weekly basis for discipleship / mentoring. On Tuesday, the 22nd, I learned that the father of one of my students passed away from COVID-19. It was heartbreaking news, especially knowing how close this student was to his father. He was a provider for his family, and those who knew him said he was a wonderful, selfless, loving man.

The family now finds itself in financial need. I fully recognize that no one here personally knows this student, nor his family, and can only take my word for it, but I'd appreciate it if you took a moment to check out their GoFundMe page, read their brief story, and--if you feel moved to do so--make a donation: www.gofundme.com/f/family-funeral-funding-for-vincent-goo...

Regarding this photo, on August 11th I kept a somewhat-annual tradition of visiting East Deerfield, MA and the old B&M West End in August, a tradition that started back in my college days as a way to kind of "cap off" the summer before going back to school. There were rumors that Train EDRJ was an afternoon departure out of East Deerfield, but being Pan Am, that of course never materialzed. So, it was off to nearby Millers Falls to await the northbound return of NECR Train 611, and after shooting them there and at East Northfield, it was off to Vernon, Vermont for one more shot. With "No Tresspassing" signs aplenty for the well-known field shot, I drove a little further north. When I spotted the sign you see at right by the Route 142 crossing, I quickly pulled over and set up.

The sign reminds me of a favorite Bible verse--one that I think can serve as a great reminder to everyone, regardless of what you believe, as we enter a new year after this difficult one:

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

This image taken at a shrine in Karachi signifies the mother and child bond. The way the child’s head and arm drape the mother’s body makes the child look safe and comfortable. The position of the head also indicates the weight of the child that the mother selflessly carries to give the child a sense of security.

i went to my favourite part of the woods at my favourite time of day and it was lovely, there will be more of these uploaded soon

this is summing up my mood fairly well. oh well.

i guess i am learning that sometimes there are no solutions and not everything can be solved in a way that makes everyone happy and sometimes you have to be selfless and not pay attention to what you want or what makes you happy and that really really sucks but it needs to be accepted and made the best of, which is not even the tiniest bit easy (reading back over things I've written when I was feeling profound makes me cringe ew)

but i will stop going on now

big loves, always x

Eight weeks ago, my daughter made the very difficult decision to send the kids to their dad's place. She made this sacrifice because of the dangers inherent in working in a seniors residence. However, her place has been virus free for many many weeks, and it was time for the kids to come home. I don't know if tears were shed during this hug, but there certainly were moist eyes here upon seeing the photo. (Taken by their dad, I presume.)

I am proud of my daughter for making this selfless decision, and I am thrilled that they are back together.

“Aliit ori’shya tal’din” Family is more than blood. Redwing was a man of respect, admiration and family. He believed in his brothers more than any trainer, he was there for them no matter what. The men under his command felt that first hand, often being treated medically by the commander himself. He wielded a blade, known as a vibrojato, gifted to him by a father who fashioned it for him after Redwing saved his son. Redwing’s mentor and tutor, Jedi Master Lee Kailon taught him and a few of his brothers of ancient species in the Unknown regions. Selfless beings, ones who would give without thoughts of receiving, in the service of pure good. These species were plentiful. But along with these peaceful stories came tales of murderous beings slaughtering all that stood near enough to strike down. He was almost one of them, losing his mother and father to a purge like these. He was saved by the council, given a home and a purpose. The republic had allowed him to live a new life, free from the fear and chaos the unknown regions were known for. He taught us that without the republic we would not be here, “We owe our lives in service of this republic, as it gave us life and will save all that it touches, FOR THE REPUBLIC!!” Kailon gave his life in service of his precious republic, the separatists brought the fear and chaos back into his life and they would pay dearly for such a mistake. Kailon took many battles by his pure determination, he was committed to his cause like no other jedi. Rarely seen doing anything between meditation, caring for his men or smashing clankas. He was a true jedi and would be Redwing’s inspiration forever, striving to serve the republic as he did, selflessly and with purpose. He wears the dark red to signify the honor his master deserves, teaching his troops the lessons he remembers like it were one rotation ago.

Valentines Day 2009...

This day is one of the most memorable days Ive ever had. It was a day filled with love, admiration, selflessness and joy. For the past month I fought so hard to save the love that meant so much to me. A love that while far from perfect at times, was the most amazing love I've had the privilege of. And in a matter of milliseconds I simultaneously destroyed it with backward thinking and logic, and broke the heart of a girl who tried so hard to let me back in... I love the woman whom I shared this day with so very much, and I will regret this poor choice of mine until the day I die. I regret all my poor choices in regards to her.

If you love someone, cherish them. Do right by them. Be selfless as much as humanly possible. and never act in ways you know will damage that love simply because you are hurt. Think about the things you say when you are upset thoroughly... It could very well be the last chance youll ever have to express yourself to that person.

I love you Priyanka and I'm terribly sorry for hurting you.

for you.

7pm each evening, the ships sound their horns and the neighbourhood echoes with the ricocheting sounds of people on their balconies, in their yards, on the street, and driving by - cheering, clapping, honking horns and creating a symphony of pots and pans being banged and clanged in recognition of the dedication, commitment, bravery, compassion of our frontline workers and the incredible stress they are dealing with in their selfless endeavours to keep us all safe and healthy. We appreciate and salute you all!!! (I'm not normally a crier but I confess, these evening salutes really choke me up.)

Happy Window Wednesday.

Background Story: I had been living on the island of Oahu in Hawaii for over two years, by the time 2015 rolled around, but had yet to visit any of the other islands. And, with the decision to leave my career path and therefore the island made, I was on a deadline. So, one of my really selfless friends let me use him visiting as an excuse to go to the Big Island of Hawaii, which, if I had to choose an island to visit, that was the one I wanted, because VOLCANOES. So, we staid at Volcanoes National Park, literally a five minute walk away from the Halema'uma'u Crater on Kilauea Volcano, and took full advantage of the closeness to go out to the crater at night for some of the most amazing stargazing I've ever experienced. Seriously, it looked like the milky way was coming out of the crater! Like, the smoke blended in perfectly with the stream of stars, overhead. It was breathtaking (and very very cold)! I never met a lady in white with her dog walking along a path, no Pele encounters for me on the big island, but being out there at midnight, watching the earth give birth to the stars, I wouldn't have doubted for a second had I met her or her sister.

To all the courageous firefighters and first responders who tirelessly battled the recent Oklahoma wildfires, thank you. Your dedication, bravery, and selflessness protected countless lives, homes, and lands. Oklahomans are deeply grateful for your service and the sacrifices you made to keep our communities safe. You are true heroes.

I got fascinated by that Buddhist Monk with a selfie stick. So were the little kids.

The illuminated Christus Statue shines prominently on a still dark Exhibition Road, London. No matter what your religious persuasion, the principles of kindness, love, selflessness, and service light the way and bring peace in an unsettled world.

Love of God is not just a feeling but always involves showing love for God by selfless service to God’s creation. The only path to salvation is by rendering selfless service to God’s creation. “Seva brings you nearer to God Through seva, you realize that all are waves of the ocean of Divinity. “When you consider work as Divine service, you can do it anywhere, at any time. It is an offering to God, an offering to the Truth. Seva is uplifting your own Self, your own people, your own world. It is embracing God’s creation”.

Its face is permanently engraved with this subtle, potent smile,

As if a smile were the only facial gesture worth making,

And it had therefore settled into a genetic trait:

The emblem of its seductive ability

To disarm a fellow-creature -

Whom it should have been persuaded

Was its most intractable enemy -

By the only safe method: making friends.

...

And close to,

Drawn into the dolphin's force-field,

Smitten by the shamanistic glimmer

In an eye that distils a life-long exposure

To another, rarer state of things,

You too are alchemically touched -

And when asked what it was like

Will find yourself saying, 'It was beautiful,'

Unselfconscious with the obviousness of the word.

.....

At the last glimpse

Still glowing with that selfless zen smile,

Leaving you to a more familiar cold

And the dubious journey home.

Excerpts from "Falling For A Dolphin" a dramatic poem by Heathcote Williams

Yesterday, we visited my home town of Cardigan in West Wales. We called in to the town hall indoor market, where we used to run a second-hand bookstall.

These rather amazing willow dolphins were suspended from the very high rafters. I did not see Ronny, the caretaker, to ask who had made them, but I would suspect it is the same lady who made the Willow Ladies in the festival.

Living in the Cardigan Bay area, I have on occasion encountered these oh so beautiful creatures....they never fail to lift the spirits. They make me laugh and the wonder of them makes me cry.

We’re in the mountains preparing for the upcoming Grandfather Mountain Highland Games… so, it just seemed appropriate to post a beach picture. Ha! I am working on local images, though this one reminded me of things that are meaningful to me. At a local grocery store to pick up supplies Monday, I began laughing as we were walking up from the parking lot. I pointed out a bumper sticker to Joyce, “Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?” Born a child of the Cold War, I well remember the world before it went to Hell in a handbasket as it looks lately. Oh, we had problems then, just as any generation has… but we were steeped in principles that seem no longer to exist. An overall sense of truth, reality, reason, honor, responsibility, selflessness, respect, and Godliness were more evident then than now, at least in my circles. Anarchy was apparent then, too, though not to the degree that everyone had their own ‘truth’. That defeats the very definition of truth, that which conforms to reality. ‘Reality’ is no doubt in short supply now, as many prefer to believe that reality will adjust to their proclivity. It doesn’t, and often comes back to bite those who think so. For me there’s a longing of a simpler time, with a childlike innocence and wonder. My idea of Heaven is to be a wide-eyed 5-year-old forever, but in this life, that is gone, like…

The Sand and the Foam

Dawn... like an angel

Lights on the step

Muting the morning she heralds

Dew on the grass

Like the tears the night wept

Gone long before

The day wears old

Time stills the singing

A child holds so dear

And I'm just beginning to hear

Gone are the pathways

The child followed home

Gone, like the sand and the foam

Pressed in the pages

Of some aging text

Lies an old lily a-crumbling

Marking a moment

Of childish respects

Long since betrayed and forgotten

Time stills the singing

A child holds so dear

And I'm just beginning to hear

Gone are the pathways

The child followed home

Gone, like the sand and the foam

Dawn... like an angel

Lights on the step

Muting the morning she heralds

Dew on the grass

Like the tears the night wept

Gone long before

The day wears old

Time stills the singing

A child holds so dear

And I'm just beginning to hear

Gone are the pathways

The child followed home

Gone, like the sand and the foam

Gone like the sand (gone like the sand)

Gone, like the sand and the foam

Ruigoord (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈrœyxoːrt]) is a village in the Houtrakpolder in the Dutch province of North Holland, situated within the municipality of Amsterdam. Until the 1880s, it was an island in the IJ bay, which turned into a polder. The village is nowadays partially closed in by the Port of Amsterdam, and lies about 8 km east of Haarlem.[1]

In the 1960s the village was evacuated by the municipality of Amsterdam, which intended to extend its harbour, but the plans fell through. In 1973 the village was squatted by a group of artists who planned to make a colony there. As such it exists to this day, but is legalized nowadays. Full moon parties are regularly organised in the formerly Roman Catholic village church and every year there is the Landjuweel (Land Jewel) festival in August.

Since the early 2000s, the village has staged an annual poetry festival over the Whitsun weekend, Vurige tongen (Fiery Tongues). One of the festival's three days is always devoted to international poets. From 2003 on, a yearly Ruigoord Trophy has been awarded to individuals who have selflessly dedicated themselves to maintaining the village as an important cultural stronghold. The first such trophy was presented to Simon Vinkenoog. Three notable non-Dutch trophy holders are the late American poet and photographer Ira Cohen, the Canada-born writer Jordan Zinovich, and the Amsterdam-based American poet and writer Eddie Woods.

The emblem of Lanyang Museum attempts to convey “The Harmony and Symbiosis between Mankind and Nature” and “Association between Mankind and History”. During initial stages of design, discussions were made among experts in museology, literature and history, natural ecology, local painters, CIS designers and dignitaries in the County before the decision was made to adopt the traditional wooden sculpture human-figure totem from the Kavalan Tribe, which most aptly expresses the above-mentioned connotations. Furthermore, the Lanyang Museum emblem also implies another meaning: countless people from all over Taiwan “selflessly contributed their efforts to make the creation of the museum possible.” Within such a small human-figure totem, it also conceals the profound respect towards them.

We'd end each day the same way - all of us watching some tv show or another, Mom on the big couch, we three sort of squished together on the love seat. She'd barely make it to the first commercial break before she was asleep.

We complained about it then - that she should just go up to her room and to bed - leave us with both couches, and not having to whisper so we wouldn't wake her. It wasn't fair - selfish, even. Why did she always get the big couch? That memory became one of those things from childhood my brother, sister, and I remembered and laughed about - and for years, it still held this subtle edge of judgement.

And then there was the day my Mom shared with me what it was really like for her to be a single mom.

She told me how it was to be young, and scared - mostly all of the time. She worried that although my Dad was wonderful - a very active parent, supportive financially - that if anything ever happened to him, she wouldn't be able to support us on her own. It kept her up at night. She took out loans and put herself back in school. She became a nurse - because nurses always had a job. Then she put herself through grad school so she could take on more responsibility, with more job security. I just thought she wanted it. She worked full time, carried a full load in school, and made dinner every night. She was at every school play, soccer game, band concert, tennis match, etc., etc. I suppose I knew at least some of it, but like I know the ground is under me - I never really thought about it - not like that.

And then - then, she told me about the couch.

She said every night she sat down intending to spend time with us. We were the most important thing in her life - she just wanted to be with us. She wanted to laugh with us, and she wanted to watch Little House on the Prairie with us. She knew we grumbled about it, and promised herself over and over she'd stay awake. But, every night, she fell asleep. She was just too exhausted. She cried when she told me. So did I.

There are a lot of ways I probably could depict my Mom as a young woman - but this - this is my Mom. My beautiful, courageous, selfless, Mom.

The Can-Y-Don, an ex RNLI Lifeboat formally named "ECJR" laid up on Loch Harport, Isle of Skye.

I've been photographing this old wooden boat for many years now ,documenting her gradual decline, and on my last visit I was lucky enough to meet up with a member of the family who own her..

Like many others I was interested in her history ...

Please read the article below..

In the early hours of 8 December 1954, most of the Scarborough fishing fleet was at sea. The weather was calm, with a gentle southeast wind and a slight swell. However, as the morning progressed, the wind suddenly strengthened, and the sea became increasingly rough. At 11:40am, the Scarborough lifeboat The ECJR, a 35-foot self-righting vessel, was called upon to escort the fishing fleet safely back to the harbour.

The lifeboat headed south and found the fishing coble near Cayton Bay, with a single crewman struggling against the worsening conditions. Securing a tow line to the Venture, the lifeboat safely guided her back to the harbour.

By this time, it was known that 10 cobles remained at sea to the north of Scarborough. With the weather escalating to a full south-easterly gale and heavy swells with breaking waves, the lifeboat ventured out again, successfully escorting the six cobles back to safety.

By 3:30pm, only three fishing boats remained unaccounted for.

The lifeboat resumed its search to the north. Soon, a message came via radio telephone that the Whitby lifeboat had escorted two of the boats into Whitby, and the remaining boat had managed to reach Whitby unaided.

At approximately 4:45pm, the lifeboat began its return journey to the harbour. By then, the sea conditions had deteriorated further, with 15-foot breaking waves caused by the ebbing tide, and visibility hampered by driving sleet. Approaching from the northwest, the lifeboat faced the wind and waves on her stern. Despite deploying a drogue to stabilize the vessel, the crew had to abort eight attempts to enter the harbour due to the tumultuous sea state.

On the ninth attempt, while running at half engine speed, an enormous wave overtook the lifeboat approximately 200 yards from the harbour entrance. The wave overwhelmed the vessel, forcing her to run submerged for about 30 yards before she surfaced, veered to port, and became uncontrollable, half-filled with water. A second massive wave struck, capsizing the lifeboat, though she immediately righted herself.

The engines had stalled, and only three crew members Allan Rennard, William Sheader, and Tom Scales remained aboard.

The other five had been thrown into the sea. While the port engine was restarted, the starboard engine failed due to ropes from the drogue entangling the propeller. As the bowman took the wheel, the crew managed to pull Ernest Eves and Jack Crawford back aboard. Tragically, as they attempted to save Second Coxswain John Cammish, another wave swept him away. Despite these challenges, the lifeboat, with its diminished crew, reached the harbour.

Coxswain John Sheader and Second Coxswain John Cammish were washed ashore within minutes. Despite the efforts of those who came to their aid and their swift transfer to St. Thomas’s Hospital on the seafront, both men succumbed to their injuries. The body of Francis Bayes was recovered later.

An investigation by the RNLI revealed that the drogue had gone missing, and its ropes were entangled around the starboard propeller, rendering the engine inoperative. Though the lifeboat itself suffered only superficial damage, the extraordinary weather conditions and operational challenges had proven overwhelming, resulting in a devastating loss.

Just days later, on 11 December, the ECJR returned to service with a newly formed crew that included the five survivors of the accident. On 13 December, a funeral service was held in this very church, attended by the widows, families, and a large congregation. The Archbishop of York delivered a heartfelt sermon.

The lifeboatmen who lost their lives were:

Coxswain John Nicholas Sheader, also known as (Jack) aged 63, who had served for 42 years and been coxswain for 10 years. He was awarded a Bronze Medal by the RNLI in 1952 for his role in aiding the Dutch motor vessel Westkust.

Second Coxswain John Cammish, aged 55, who had served with both the Filey and Scarborough lifeboats for 37 years and been second coxswain for 10 years.

Signalman Francis Bayes, aged 29, who had served as a crew member for many years.

Since that tragic day, the station has gathered annually at St Mary's church on the Sunday nearest to 8 December to honor the memory of the ECJR disaster and all other lifeboat tragedies.

Roger Buxton, Scarborough RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager commented: 'Every year since this tragedy has been commemorated by a church service remembering their ultimate sacrifice and final act of selflessness on the first Sunday after its anniversary.

'During Scarborough RNLI’s 223-year history, the number of people rescued is in substantial but untold numbers. For all that, sixteen men have given their lives in the service of Scarborough lifeboat. They include Frank Dalton, who died in an accident three years before the ECJR in tumultuous seas on 9 December 1951. All 16 men who made the ultimate sacrifice in the history of our station are remembered during the service.

'We remember with deep respect the brave lifeboatmen and shore crew who sacrificed their lives. For some, these events may now seem like a distant memory, but to the families of the fallen, they remain ever-present. It is our duty to ensure their courage and sacrifice are never forgotten by the people of Scarborough.'

Courtesy of the RNLI..

After her service with the RNLI she was re named "Can-Y-Don" and used as a pleasure craft at Aberystwyth on the Welsh coast. Then later used for fishing of the Isle of Skye..

There is talk of having her returned to Scarborough and being restored as a memorial to the lives lost, but there is some mixed feelings about this...
