Leo and I are looking for pieces of art to fill our new home. We have nothing except a few photos and old college posters. Our only rule is we want to support independent artists, preferably locally, and we have to love the piece.

Leo's long been a skateboarder/surfer/snow boarder/strap crap to feet and hurtle down a hill person. We saw this at a live show the other night and Leo and I both loved it, right away.

God Bless America and all the brave people who have served our country selflessly in our armed forces, especially those who gave their lives for it.

It was Fleet Week in New York City and Time Square was full of Marines and sailors in uniform. As I generally do when I see military, I said "thank you for serving.". Seeing so many at once however, made me a little emotional. I thanked a number of them and asked to take some photos. These members of the Coast Guard seemed surprised but obliged me.

Poignant Tribute to Fallen Officers

Missouri City's 6th Annual Police Officer Memorial Ceremony was a poignant tribute to commemorate the selfless public servants who have given their lives in defense of others.

The program touched on the traditions of law-enforcement: Service, integrity, honor and dedication.

Residents, public safety officers, employees and local, regional and national officials attended the solemn service. Mayor Allen Owen, U.S. Rep. Al Green and Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald addressed participants, all sharing the importance of public safety service to communities nationwide.

"In the line of duty is five simple words, but they are profound," Congressman Green told the audience. "In the line of duty, many persons have made it possible to have the opportunity to be here today. In the line of duty, our homes are safe and our children are protected."

The ceremony was steeped in tradition and featured a moving melody of "Amazing Grace", the presentation of colors by the Police Honor Guard, a touching performance of the "National Anthem" by Mrs. Marissa Morgan, a Permit Service Representative I in the City's Development Services department; a 21-gun salute by the Missouri City Honor Guard and a mournful rendition of taps by Hightower High School student Cole Nelson.

The commemoration, held at Public Safety Headquarters, also included the presentation of the wreath and the lighting of a candle in front of Protector's Statute by Mayor Owen and Rep. Green. The candle symbolizes the eternal flame that burns for all officers who have died in the line of duty.

"Every year, Missouri City celebrates our great officers," Mayor Owen shared with the audience. "And we're very fortunate in that we have not lost a single officer in the line of duty."

Fitzgerald read the names of 19 Texas law-enforcement officers killed in the line of duty over the past year. Their names will be inscribed in memoriam on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

After asking everyone to observe the officers' sacrifice in a moment of silence, Fitzgerald spoke of the special "courage", strength and dedication officers have on a "day-to-day basis." He told the audience police officers are unified by the "color of blue" and stand together on one accord, making sure to "remember those who have come before us."

In acknowledgment of the department's reputation for excellence, one of its finest received an award from Rep. Green at the memorial service. Congressman. Green gifted a flag to Police Officer Jay McClellan to reward his "dedication to protecting and serving the citizens of Missouri City." The flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. recently at Green's request.

Selfless servants - Christianskirken, Aarhus | March 2014.

short documentary, part of a long term visual project about Christianity in Denmark.

Pastor Carsten has spent most of his career spreading the word of God as a pastor, trying to find new ways of involving people to his church. His main focus has always been the sermon, through which he has been able to attract more and more people within the years. The challenge consists in keeping people interested in the church community, giving them something that they could bring home after the Sunday service. It is a though job meeting expectations of people, especially in a world that is constantly changing, and that is why Simon gave up with his theology studies. Simon has been volunteering in the last four years in the same church where Carsten operate. He still preach the word of God to some youth groups, although he is sure he won´t be ready to do it as a profession. Being a pastor involves first of all a perfect knowledge of the community life, and secondly a keen on self understanding. Whereas a person is not able to meet his personal expectation, would be unbearable for him to reach the belief of his own community.

perspective

Beware of the smallest fragment of recognition, of conceptual acceptance. Hold that whatever allows you respite will conquer you forever. Chide the barren offering. Desecrate the soft ontologies. Disparage without postulation. Do not prop yourself up with myth or symbol.

Who can remember? Who can forget? Who can brave the loneliness of a mind divorced of all occurrence? Who can embrace what cannot be fathomed, by not fathoming? Not us, for we are the lame ones, sonorously bragging of our fancier and fancier crutches; pathetically we stagger, and then pride ourselves on what supports us. Set us upon our own two feet and we shall fall, and fall. Then let us fall. We must rely on nothing, expect nothing, and strive for nothing.

One must stand alone, stabilized by nothing the mind can adhere to, or one merely leans ...one does not stand.

One who is fed intravenously all his life has neither the ability to cook, nor to feed himself. Not even the ability to hunger.

One who seeks belonging in the world becomes a veterinarian. One who does not, becomes a dog.
